Chapter 62
During dinner, we chatted while eating, getting along really well.
But things took a turn very quickly.
There was urgent knocking at the door.
A man outside was shouting hoarsely, "Rocky, get out of here!"
The sudden voice startled me, and my fork fell onto my plate with a crisp sound.
This noise made the person outside bang on the door even more urgently.
"I heard that! Get out of here now!"
Rocky frowned and murmured, "That sounds like Mario. What's wrong with him?"
Then Rocky gave me a look and said gently, "I'll go check it out. I'll be right back."
I felt inexplicably uneasy and nervous. I looked at Kane and said, "You should go with Rocky and see what's going on."
Kane didn't say anything. He just wiped his mouth, put down his knife and fork, and followed behind Rocky.
I looked back anxiously.
Tina, who was beside me, comforted me, saying, "Mario has a bit of a temper, but he's actually a pretty good neighbor. Sometimes when Rocky and I need to go out, he even helps take care of our kids."
Anthony nodded, confirming this.
My heart had just settled down a bit when a gunshot rang out from outside.
My eyes widened, and I instinctively ran out immediately. I was worried Kane might get hurt.
When I got outside, by the light at the door, I saw Kane's gun pointed at a middle-aged man on the ground.
That must be Mario.
Kane's expression was cold. He slowly said, "What did you just say? Say it again."
Mario was clearly scared by Kane. He was trembling all over, his eyes darting around, stuttering as he tried to back away.
Kane's earlier shot had hit the ground right by his feet.
Obviously, Kane was just trying to intimidate him.
I quickly walked up and grabbed Kane's arm that was holding the gun. "What happened? Don't do anything rash."
After seeing me come over, Kane's expression softened a bit.
But I could still see that his eyes had been full of murderous intent just moments ago.
What did Mario do to make Kane react like this?
I couldn't help but turn my head to look at Mario.
The moment Mario saw me, a trace of confusion flashed in his eyes.
Kane turned his head and stared at him coldly, blocking his gaze from looking me over.
Mario trembled again and quickly scrambled to his feet, saying to Rocky, "This is something you promised me. Why are you going back on your word now?"
Rocky seemed angry, too. He said to Mario, "When I agreed to this before, it was because of your son—he hadn't wronged Annie. Now that he's done something like that, do you really think I'd let my daughter marry him?"
I was shocked. It sounded like Mario and Rocky had some kind of agreement, and it involved their children.
Mario was very angry, his breathing becoming much more rapid.
I felt that standing here in confrontation wasn't the way to solve the problem, so I said to Mario, "Whatever happened, don't fight. We can resolve this peacefully."
Mario's eyes widened, and he pointed at Kane, who was still holding the gun, and said, "He almost shot me dead, and you're telling me to resolve this peacefully!"
Kane stared at him coldly, his tone icy. "If you dare point your finger at her again, I promise—you'll die."
Mario clearly didn't know Kane's identity.
After all, no one would dare talk to a mafia boss like that.
He snorted coldly and stuck out his neck. It seemed my intervention had given him some courage, and he said to Kane, "Go ahead and kill me if you dare!"
Oh my God, this man was really asking for death.
I quickly walked in front of him, looked up at him, and said, "If you think you're in the right, why don't you tell me what happened and let me judge?"
Mario looked at me suspiciously, as if asking what right I had.
I looked back at Tina and the others who had also come out, and said, "I'm Sonya. I'm here as a guest today. I don't know any of you from before, so I don't think I'll favor either side."
Hearing this, Mario's expression improved a bit.
He looked at Annie, who was standing beside Tina, and said, "Their daughter Annie was dating my son Rockefeller. We had already agreed that once they came of age, we'd let them get engaged first. But yesterday Anthony sent over a letter breaking off relations."
As he spoke, Mario threw out the letter Anthony had written.
I picked it up and looked at it. It was a warning from Anthony.
He told Rockefeller that if he ever saw him coming to find Annie again, he would definitely break his legs.
But after spending this time together, I didn't think Anthony was someone who would act so recklessly.
So I handed the letter to Tina, looked at Annie, and asked gently, "Do you know about this?"
To my surprise, Annie nodded. Her eyes flashed with anger. "I know. I asked my brother to write it for me. I don't want to keep seeing Rockefeller anymore."
I touched her head to comfort her, and continued asking, "Can you tell me why?"
Annie's eyes suddenly turned red.
She blinked those beautiful, big eyes at me, her voice choking up, "Sonya, Rockefeller betrayed me. I saw him kissing a girl from the next town with my own eyes!"
Those words exploded like thunder in my ears.
I didn't expect it to be like this. At the same time, anger welled up in my heart, and I turned to look at Mario.
Mario clearly didn't know about this. He was also shocked.
But even when their children do wrong, parents always try to cover for them.
Mario stammered, "Maybe that girl seduced Rockefeller."
But Annie said very firmly, "Whether the girl seduced him or he went to find that girl on his own, he betrayed our relationship. I will absolutely not marry someone like that!"
Mario was unwilling to accept this.
After all, Tina's family was doing quite well. If he could marry Annie, it would be a big help to their family.
Because of this incident, the engagement was called off. Of course, he wasn't willing to accept it.
I looked at Mario, my tone calm. "If you keep standing here, I guarantee my husband will point his gun at your head."
As I said this, Kane cooperated with my words and raised his gun, aiming at Mario's forehead.
Remembering the shot Kane had fired earlier, Mario immediately ran away.
Watching Mario's retreating figure, I turned to Annie and said, "Annie, you did the right thing. If you married a man like that, he would definitely betray you."
Hearing my affirmation, Annie cried even harder.
She hugged my waist tightly, her tears soaking a patch of my clothes.
I held her without saying anything.
The family quietly waited for Annie to let out her emotions.
