Chapter 63
Soon, Annie's emotions settled down.
I saw her take a few deep breaths before closing her eyes.
When she opened them again, she had returned to that calm and composed look.
She looked at me and said with some embarrassment, "I'm really sorry, Sonya, for making you witness that."
I gently shook my head and hugged her with some heartache, saying, "That guy is really a jerk, but at least you have family who supports you."
Annie nodded somewhat sheepishly.
We returned to the cabin and continued the dinner we hadn't finished.
The atmosphere at the table became somewhat heavy for a moment, and I instinctively looked toward Kane.
Kane cleared his throat and spoke calmly.
"Annie is still young. Maybe you shouldn't be in such a hurry to find her a partner, otherwise it'll be hard to guarantee this kind of thing won't happen again."
After Kane spoke, Tina showed a helpless expression.
She said to Kane, "Actually, I've never interfered with who Annie likes or who she wants to be with."
Kane raised an eyebrow and looked at Annie.
Annie nodded obediently and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Being with that person was my own idea, but now I don't care about him at all."
Annie had a carefree spirit and courage that I didn't have.
I looked at her with mixed feelings.
Thinking about myself, I suddenly felt I wasn't even as good as this kid.
At least when facing someone she didn't want, she would bravely say "no."
While I used to just accept everything passively.
Hearing Tina say this, Kane responded with a faint sound.
He didn't say anything more, just continued eating quietly.
Tina smiled at me and said somewhat embarrassedly, "Sorry you had to see all this."
I shook my head. "Every family has its own problems, and you're always standing by Annie's side and protecting her."
For most families, this was already very hard to achieve.
Hearing me say this, Tina broke into a smile, even with a hint of pride.
"Yes, exactly, dear. In our family, everyone can choose their own way of life, including becoming a mobster."
After saying this, Tina winked at Kane, and Kane looked at me somewhat helplessly.
I really loved it here. If possible, I hoped Kane would bring me here more often.
After dinner, in the countryside of the farm, it was already late at night.
Annie insisted on sleeping with me, but was taken away by Tina.
Hearing their footsteps fade away, I vaguely heard Tina say, "Annie is so inconsiderate. Kane and Sonya just got married, they're newlyweds, why are you butting in?"
This comment made me feel a bit shy, and I lowered my head in embarrassment.
The room Tina prepared for Kane and me appeared to be Kane's own.
On the bedside table was a photo of Kane as a teenager.
I hesitated for a moment before asking, "The timing wasn't right earlier, so I haven't asked you yet - when did your mother get together with Rocky?"
Hearing my question, Kane hesitated for a moment before saying calmly, "She got together with Rocky very early on. But it was only after I officially became the mob heir that she came to this farm with Rocky and the others to live her own life."
I felt somewhat moved after hearing this. "Your mother really loves you."
Kane nodded readily, confirming my statement. "Without her, I wouldn't have been able to grow up safely in the mob."
I found it hard to imagine how such a refined, beautiful woman with maternal warmth could have raised Kane so well by herself in that cutthroat mob environment.
My thoughts never escaped Kane.
Just as this thought came to me, Kane chuckled softly. "Before my mother became my father's wife, she was the only daughter of another family. In other words, if Tina hadn't married my father, she would have been one of the mob's leaders herself."
I looked at Kane with some surprise.
Kane pulled me into his arms and lay down on the bed. He seemed very willing to tell me about it.
"Tina is a very interesting person. Once you spend more time with her, you'll find she's completely different from what you think."
Thinking of how calm and composed Tina had been today, I couldn't help but become curious about what Kane meant by "different."
Just as Kane and I were chatting in bed, there was a knock on our door.
I looked at Kane hesitantly, and Tina's voice came from outside. "Dear, may I come in and chat with you two?"
I immediately wanted to get up to open the door, but Kane beat me to it and opened the closed wooden door.
Seeing that it was Kane who opened the door, Tina nodded with satisfaction.
"I'm glad you still remember what I told you before - always maintain gentlemanly manners toward your loved one."
Kane winked at me and shrugged.
Only then did I realize that Tina seemed to be rather strict with Kane in private.
A strange nervous feeling spread through my heart.
I worried that Tina had come to tell me about something I hadn't done well during the day.
But Tina's strict requirements seemed to be directed only at Kane.
When she faced me, she showed the same gentle and loving look as when we were eating and talking downstairs.
She sat down beside me and said softly, "Dear, are you comfortable here?"
I nodded quickly. "Everything here gives me the feeling of home. If I could, I'd really want to live here with you all."
Tina was amused by my words.
She gently stroked my hair and said to me, "Of course, dear. If you want, this is your home. But I think that boy probably wouldn't agree to it."
As she spoke, Tina glanced at Kane standing nearby.
Kane spread his hands and said expressionlessly, "I have no objection to this."
When facing Tina, Kane was like a helpless child.
Whatever she said, he could only accept it willingly.
Tina looked at Kane and said, "You promised me before that you'd come back every month for family day. Think about it yourself - how long has it been since you came back?"
A flash of guilt crossed Kane's eyes.
He stood beside Tina and explained in a gentle voice, "There have been some troublemakers recently. I have to deal with them as soon as possible, otherwise they'll cause bigger problems later."
Hearing Kane's words, Tina waved her hand.
"You men always have your own things to do. I just want to tell you that no matter how important your work is, you absolutely cannot neglect your wife."
As she spoke, Tina gently patted my hand.
Those warm hands gave me an infinite sense of security.
