Chapter 188
Elise drove back to her villa. Zander was in the living room drinking, looking troubled.
"You're back?" Zander said coldly.
Elise went over and touched Zander's hand.
"Thank you for understanding. Nolan's funeral is all done!"
Zander nodded expressionlessly.
"Yesterday I talked it over with Dad, and we've decided to transfer part of the company's business to Everglade City. We both think you're the best person to go there and manage things."
Elise pressed her lips together, clearly reluctant.
"I just got my footing in Emerald City, why do I have to leave again? Won't all my previous efforts be wasted?"
Zander stared at Elise with sharp eyes.
"Isn't this what the company needs? I know it's hard on you, Elise! Once you get things settled in Everglade City, we'll go to Zephyria and get married!"
With that, Zander hugged Elise and kissed her, but Elise's lips were cold and dry.
Elise said reluctantly, "Let's get things sorted out in Emerald City first! As for our wedding, there's no rush!"
A flash of displeasure showed in Zander's eyes.
"You don't want to get married because of something else, right?"
Caught out, Elise's eyes darted away nervously.
"I don't know what you mean!"
Zander's hand around Elise's slender waist suddenly tightened, his pupils contracting.
"What has Matthew been putting in your head? You've only been here a few days and you already can't bear to leave him?"
"I haven't!" Elise's face flushed red, not daring to look into Zander's eyes, "You're overthinking it!"
Zander said coldly and ruthlessly, "If not, then agree to what I just said and leave for Everglade City right away! I'll handle the business in Emerald City!"
Elise didn't know how to refuse Zander for a moment. After struggling for a while, she said firmly, "Zander, I can agree to anything else, but I can't leave Emerald City!"
Zander's eyes suddenly turned bloodshot as he grabbed Elise's neck.
"And you still say Matthew hasn't gotten to you? Elise, you've only known Matthew for a few days, but we've been in love for three years! If you don't listen to me, you'll get in deeper and deeper!"
"Matthew is not a good person, everyone who knows him knows that! You know he had a wife named Amelia who later disappeared! Why did she disappear? Because Matthew was keeping Mia on the side!"
"Don't be fooled by his respectable appearance! I'm the one who truly loves you!"
Elise said, "I'm not staying because of Matthew. I'm staying to find out who I really am!"
Zander froze, a flash of nervousness in his eyes, but then he answered calmly, "What do you mean by that? Aren't you Elise? Who else could you be?"
Elise shook her head vigorously in disbelief.
"But why do Matthew, Luna, Zane, even Nolan and their butler all think I'm Amelia?"
"I've seen photos of Amelia, and she looks exactly like me! I don't believe two people in the world can look exactly the same!"
"Zander, you and Mom and Dad said that three years ago I was in Zephyria, and I lost my memory because of an accident! Why is it such a coincidence that Amelia also disappeared three years ago?"
Zander's expression turned cold, "What, you suspect me and Mom and Dad are all lying to you?"
Elise quickly said, "That's not what I mean! You've all been so good to me, I don't even know how to repay your kindness. But this is too much of a coincidence, I have to find out!"
Zander was silent for a moment, then smiled.
"Alright, alright, don't think so much about it! You must be tired from being at the Moore family. Go take a bath and get some good sleep! We'll talk about this later!"
Elise didn't want to fall out with Zander over Matthew, and she wouldn't get the answers she wanted right away anyway, so she nodded.
"Okay, I'll go take a bath!"
Back in her room, after bathing, Elise put on that nightgown and turned around in front of the mirror, trying to see something.
But the memories from three years ago seemed to have been deliberately cut off by someone. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't remember.
"Am I Amelia or not?"
After taking care of Nolan's affairs, Matthew returned to the company to officially work.
Chris knocked and came in, handing Matthew a document.
"There's a very important business event tonight that requires Mr. Moore's attendance!"
Matthew looked over the event details and nodded.
"Okay!"
Chris turned to leave, but Matthew called him back.
"The doctor specializing in memory restoration that I asked you to contact, any results?"
Chris suddenly remembered, "I contacted one ages ago! But because of Mr. Nolan Moore's situation, I didn't tell you!"
With that, Chris took out a business card from his briefcase and handed it to Matthew with both hands.
"Mr. Moore, this is Dr. Field, an authority in psychoanalysis. He'll be in Emerald City for the next few months!"
Matthew looked at the card.
"Set up a meeting for us at lunch!"
"No problem!"
At lunch break, Matthew came to the restaurant for his appointment with Dr. Field.
Matthew explained Amelia's situation to Dr. Field.
"My wife was drugged three years ago and lost her memory. Is there any method or medication that could help my wife recover her memory?"
"Three years ago?" Dr. Field frowned with difficulty and said cautiously, "If she lost her memory because of being drugged, logically once the drugs are cleared from her system, she should recover her memory."
"But your wife has been without her memory for too long!"
Matthew's brow furrowed, "What, can't it be recovered?"
Dr. Field said, "Humans are strange, they're like computers with programmed settings. After a period of time, they automatically clear memories. That's why we always have trouble remembering things from the past, but easily remember things that happened in recent days."
"Your wife has had amnesia for three years. Even if we use medication, it will be very difficult for her to remember things from three years ago!"
Matthew's heart sank, disappointment showing on his face.
"So there's no hope?"
Dr. Field thought for a moment.
"It's very difficult for her to remember everything! But it's not impossible! Each case needs to be analyzed individually! Mr. Moore, if it's convenient, you could bring your wife over. I'll examine her, and then I can give you a definite answer!"
Matthew gripped Dr. Field's hand tightly, his eyes full of hope.
"I don't care about the money. You must do your best to help my wife recover her memory!"
With that, Matthew took out a bank card from his pocket and handed it to Dr. Field.
"This is the initial payment. Whether you can cure her or not, this money is yours!"
Dr. Field's eyes lit up when he saw the bank card. After a modest hesitation, he accepted it.
"Mr. Moore, I'll definitely do my best!"
After seeing Dr. Field off, Matthew returned to the company to work. After work, Matthew went back to the villa to pack his things and move to the Moore Manor.
Watching Matthew pack with an icy expression, not communicating with her at all, Mia's heart felt like it was being stabbed.
"Matthew, can you come with me tonight for a brain checkup? Even though I've been discharged, my head keeps hurting for no reason. It hurts so much I can't sleep!"
Matthew said coldly, "Ask Kaia to go with you. I have an important event to attend tonight!"
"What event?" Mia suddenly became interested, "I want to go too! I've been stuck here all this time, it's so boring!"
Matthew didn't even look at her, asking coldly, "What's our relationship? How would we present ourselves to everyone?"
