Chapter 33 A Thing With the Alpha
ADRIANA
My head was pounding by the time I woke up.
My body hurts too. It was so sore from the training session I’d attended a day ago. And even though I missed yesterday’s session because Hazel thought I would die if I came around, I still felt like a truck had driven over me.
My stomach rumbled, causing me to stand up from the bed.
I looked like a mess and my hair was everywhere.
There was a knock on the door and a chill flashed through my spine as I looked at myself in the mirror.
“I’m coming! Just a moment!”
There was no way I was going to let him see me like this. After I lashed out at him that day, I’d felt so bad but I hadn’t had the time to go see him.
It was all that witch’s fault. If she hadn’t been there, then I wouldn’t have spoken to him that way.
Seeing that there was no remedy for the war that was happening in my head, I took a shirt and wrapped it over my hair.
My breath smelled horrible but I couldn’t keep him at the door so I was going to minimize my talking as much as possible.
Just say sorry and get him out.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t happy when I saw that it wasn’t him at the door.
“Betty, come in.”
I followed behind her as she carried the tray of food into my room and I filled my lungs with the aroma coming from it.
“What is that?” She pointed at my head.
“What? Oh.” I took it off my head.
I felt comfortable with her, and I didn’t know why. She didn’t come around a lot but when she did, it made me happy to have someone to talk to.
“I need to take a shower. I know. Thanks for bringing my food around.”
She laughed.
“It’s okay, I figured you hadn’t eaten because I didn’t see you yesterday and the tray I left at the door was still there.”
“Yeah, I slept in yesterday. Thank you again.”
She nodded.
“Are you okay?”
She looked like she had a lot on her mind.
“Huh? Oh yes. I’m okay. Work has been crazy. Having to feed the warriors when they’re training for only heaven knows what has been crazy. They train all day and they stink and it’s just so frustrating to deal with.”
I had no idea the maids had to cater for all that.
“I’m really sorry about that. I had no idea you had to deal with all that. What time do you sleep?”
“You mean what time does my witch of a matron let me rest my head? Never! She works us like we’re dogs and if we complain, we don’t get food.”
I was surprised to hear all this. We sat down on the bed because I needed to hear more.
“Does the Alpha know about this?”
She scoffed.
“The Alpha? Who’s stupid enough to tell him?”
Her response made me think.
Wasn’t he as nice as I thought he was? I don’t know why but it made me nervous.
“Isn’t he accommodating?”
She must have detected something in my voice.
“Oh, no no. The Alpha is a good man. We’re just too scared to tell him because of the Matron. If we tell him and she finds out that one of us told him, then we’ll get in trouble and that won’t be good for any of us. I don’t want to get anyone in trouble.”
“But you can’t keep suffering in silence. You have to tell someone.”
I could feel her fear. I’d been in that situation a month ago and now that I could help out, I will.
She moved closer to me. Her eyes were pleading.
“That’s why I came to you, Adriana. Please help us out. I can’t go to anyone else.”
Her plea caught me off guard.
“Why me? I don’t think I can do anything to help.”
She grabbed my hand.
“Oh, please. You can. I heard you have a thing going with the Alpha. That means you guys are close right?”
What? A thing going with the Alpha? How in the world did people even find out about that?
“Oh, no. You’re mistaken. I have nothing going on with him. He just helped me out. That’s it. We’re not friends or anything like that.”
What rumor exactly was going around? Maybe that was the reason why Hannah was shooting daggers at me with her eyes the other day.
I could see how desperate Betty was and I really wanted to help her out.
“I’ll speak to him about it. We’ll see how it goes.”
I sat there after she left, thinking about a lot.
She thanked me and rushed out to continue with her day.
Just recently, I’d been in her position, running from pillar to post, looking for someone to help me and finding no one because no one was brave enough to stand up for me.
The only person on my side joined them in taunting me and I was left with no one.
As much as I had a feeling that this wasn’t going to go down well, I decided to help out.
I took my bath and made myself look like a human being and quickly had breakfast.
My stomach thanked me for finally giving it fuel because it was about to fold up and pack out.
I didn’t want to see him because I still felt embarrassed that I had spoken to him like that but I had to see him as soon as possible so I could get this over and done with.
I started rehearsing what I’d say in my head as I walked down the stairs.
Would he still be mad?
“There you are. Just the bitch I was looking for.”
The grating voice made me groan and rolled my eyes. I should have just stayed upstairs.
