Chapter 43

Chapter 43

Alexander's POV

It took me a lot more than I expected to deal with the men that I needed to handle. On her part, she didn't need too much. It might be another reason why I found I had so much difficulty handling them. Just a couple of moves here and there's all she tried, but I couldn't say that they saw her efforts as futile because our presence alone meant one advantage or the other.

Dealing with the Assyrians that we were up against wasn't a massacre, far from that, but soon enough we had the advantage as we fought brilliantly and without any hesitation whatsoever. We had all come with our moves and did our absolute best to destroy the opponents before us. Naturally, we ended them all, but I left one of them alive just to ask the question that I was suspecting and wanted to ask.

"Above all, who sent you?" I asked him, my voice cool as I stared straight at him and waited for the response that I was suspecting.

"Samuel," he said without any hesitation.

I wrinkled my nose in disgust. This was the worst kind of person that Samuel could use to do his job. He didn't even have an ounce of loyalty, and that disgusted me a lot as I shook my head. But it was fine all the same, in my own opinion. I was, however, not very surprised to see that it was Samuel and his people.

"Let's go home," I told Maya. I shook my head and decided not to worry about this issue anymore since I already pretty much had everything that I needed here and the issue was settled. I however couldn't forget the fact that she had hardly made any move in the battle to fight against the aggressors. It was something that I kept in my mind. Maybe she was just conserving her strength, I thought to myself, making up an excuse for her even though it still didn't seem plausible enough.

I looked at Damon and gave him a command. "Clean up the bodies and make sure that no one knows that we were confronted here in a battle," I said to him, my voice cold, somehow thinking that he betrayed me, that he was against me. He was being destructive to the relationship we had with each other, but I was determined not to let him know that I was aware of anything yet. He shouldn't have any idea, not until I was ready with proof of his game.

I stared at him as he was tapping on his phone for a couple of seconds. I had wiped everything out from my previous phone, but even now I couldn't help but wonder if he was actually the one who was going to leave. I entered into the car once again and drove my Luna all the way back home slowly while thinking of the things that had happened and the things that would continue to happen if we couldn't figure out a way to stop Samuel in his tracks.

This attack, something tells me that it's only the beginning and that there are going to be a lot more of them for me to handle. Sure, this one wasn't all that serious as I expected it to be, but it didn't mean that it wouldn't become an issue for me sooner or later, especially if he found stronger men to send. Controlling this one had been easy for me.

The moment I got home, however, I made sure that I first spent time talking with someone that I hadn't talked to for quite a while. I felt as if I would get some insight as to how to proceed after having the conversation that I scheduled with her. She's pretty and entered into the reception room without showing in any way that she was here for business. Sometimes she acts wise, as my most loyal trusted advisor, but with how she's looking, she might form a scandal in this relationship in the palace anytime from now.

However, I managed to smile at her. How she dresses is somehow part of the reason I like her so much. She's never so overly formal, and she always seems to make the atmosphere light even in very serious situations. I don't know how much I can tell her about my distrust for Damon, but I've never really hidden things from her before. I wanted her help, so I didn't think there should be any issue with it now.

Therefore, I began without much hesitation. I told her about the things that were bothering me. At this instant, she listened carefully to everything I told her about my Luna and didn't question or stop me from speaking when I was in the middle of pouring out my heart to her. She sat respectfully with a distance between us, but I couldn't help but feel reassured when she smiled at me.

"Don't worry," she said slowly, the thoughtfulness in her expression making me glad that at least she wasn't taking this lightly.

"So, I think Damon is becoming a little untrustworthy to you," she continued. "You need to keep a close eye on him."

I nodded, but honestly speaking, that wasn't anything I didn't know about before. I had already decided that I would keep an eye on him, so this wasn't new information. However, she had more for me, so I didn't question it and instead waited for her to give me what she had left.

"Have you set some guards to watch him?" she questioned, the words ringing in my head.

"Guards?" I questioned, somehow they didn't make any sense in this situation before me.

"Yes," she said. "As little as it seems, this action is actually going to go a long way. Keeping an eye on him—or do you really expect yourself to be able to watch him at all moments?" she questioned, smiling sweetly.

"Of course not," I said. "Then, I will make sure to do that. I will get guards to watch him and ensure that he doesn't—" I told her.

She nodded. "Before you go though, I need a couple of things to tell you about," she said, and so she began. The words she told me about things I didn't know before about my palace and the happenings in them. I listened closely to what she suggested I do concerning various political issues.

In the end, I left Emilia after I'd gotten everything she had to tell me and proceeded to appoint the guards that I had decided to get ready for watching Damon. However, I got a message from him that I didn't expect out of the blue, and I found myself frowning at the content of it.

"The Luna is in danger. She needs your help right now!" I could hardly believe my eyes as I read through it.

"Where is she?" I asked, wondering how she would be in trouble in the palace.

"She is stranded some distance away from the palace, and there are a couple of rogue wolves with her. They might actually capture her before our soldiers can catch up. You're the only one that can get to her in time."

I could hardly believe my ears. It sounded incredulous, what he was telling me. But I knew he wouldn't lie to me blatantly. If anything arose as a result of this, he was going to bear the full consequences.

"All right then, I'll be going there," I said, shifting into my werewolf form and making a swift movement, traveling at superhuman speed to the street that he had described for me over the phone. Somehow it felt as if it was a ploy to get me simply out of the palace so that he could do something, which was why I made sure that before I made my move, I sent a message to Emilia to make sure she understood what was going on and also to ask her to watch him in the palace specifically. Thinking about it now, it was even a much better idea to give her the task of watching him because, honestly speaking, the guards were sometimes dumb, and only she, I thought, would be capable of keeping him in check if he tried anything funny either now or later.
