Chapter 42
Chapter 42
Alexander's POV
Talking with Samuel was actually not as difficult as I expected it to be. He seemed to be on his best behavior, which was saying a lot because he didn't try any kind of remark to suggest danger or anything of this sort. He seemed to be pretty chill and calm with everything that he was doing, and I couldn't help but feel like something was going on.
"Yeah, with the Luna," he was telling me now. I looked straight at him and raised an eyebrow at the tone he used. It's almost as if he's expecting her to be here for something.
I was tired of the nice remarks that he gave me and the way he spoke so peacefully like we didn't have any issues or problems with each other. "You don't have to pretend anything, and we don't need to act as if we don't know each other," I told him. "We are quarreling, and we haven't finished business, so you might as well put off the act," I continued, trying not to glare at him.
He laughed a little. "I didn't expect you to be so feisty," he told me before shaking his head. "Honestly speaking, I don't want any trouble. Not yet," he said. I couldn't possibly believe him, but he seemed to be genuine with what he said.
"I mean, like seriously, the journal, I decided to keep it with myself. I don't want it out, not yet—it's going to be a powerful weapon later on." I realized after a couple of seconds that he was probably more dangerous than I thought he was and that I should tread carefully while dealing with him. If not, things might end up in absolute chaos.
I shouldn't continue talking with him like this and acting as if he was not my enemy yesterday. I should try to negotiate a couple of things and get some results from talking with him. Thinking about that, I made up my mind and spoke softly, at least a little softer than before. "What do you actually want? I want that journal more than anything now. Anything I can do to bargain?" I questioned.
There's a silence in the air. "Not yet. I'll think about terms later," he tells me finally, laughing in the meeting. "This is sure to be fun," he continues before nodding at me and giving me a wink that I don't appreciate at all.
He leaves me then, and the little festival kind of stuff continues without any more incident. Personally, I'm still not really up for his games and his overly annoying speech, but I made up my mind to deal with it accordingly if the time came for it to happen.
I waited. Finally, after what seemed like forever, things seemed to be moving forward as someone showed up and started giving us the reason for our being here in general. I listened to him carefully, hoping to get as much out of this as I could possibly get. As he spoke, the confidence he used was very nice, and he seemed to have a lot of things he would like for us to do together and also a lot of things to say to us. But in general, the only message I got was that he was calling us here for a simple talk and nothing more. It seemed more like all of this was so that we would socialize with one another and get on friendly terms instead of for us to discuss something overly serious like I thought it should be.
I shrugged, deciding that there wasn't too much for me to worry about. If this was the case, the meeting would soon end without incidents also, and then we would all be on our way back home. If it wasn't such a consequential meeting, then I could at least be a little lenient and calm in my appearance and what I did. I didn't have to watch every single word I said or act overly strict or anything like that.
"It's time for dances," someone said. I looked to see the master of the ceremony and frowned at him. What on earth were we actually celebrating? It was incredibly annoying for all of us to be here, seeming to jubilate when there was absolutely nothing I could see for us to be happy and rejoicing about.
I frowned as I went over to meet my Luna. "We'll be heading home soon," I told her, my voice a low whisper. She looked a little surprised by what I said. It was understandable—we were supposed to stay here until it was finally over, but obviously, that wasn't happening.
Soon enough, while we were still here and still trying to figure out what this party kind of meeting was for, something unexpected happened. I heard gunshots—actual gunshots—and I swirled around to look at my Luna in surprise. I looked at the demon also by my side some distance away and then gave him the cue.
I just didn't want to stay for trouble because if I really did, then no one would actually be able to stop me. However, this was incredibly annoying to me. Who would take a force at an official meeting involving the alphas? With so many beneficiaries and important people present, it was going to end up in complete brutality by the alphas on the attackers and aggressors.
But I hadn't been intending to stay here for so long in the first place, so I didn't think too much about leaving now since things were already turning south. At least with the way things were going now, no one would question me if I suddenly made up my mind to leave and acted accordingly.
I entered into my car, and the Luna was beside me as we started driving away as quickly as possible, wanting to be away from the chaos immediately. However, some cars started making their way around us, and before long, I noticed that they were following us.
"It's an ambush," I thought to myself, frowning as I let out a deep breath. Why would people like this suddenly start attacking us, and why would we all of a sudden be put in such a position? I couldn't see any other explanation anything further than one particular fact—most likely it was Samuel. He had done all of this. It was probably him that was causing all this trouble that was happening right now.
I turned to look at my Luna, wanting to know if she was ready yet for what was to come. Looking straight into her eyes, I could see that she was a bit scared of the happenings that were very strange at this moment. I totally understood why she would be scared, but honestly speaking, I wasn't about to let anyone harass us without facing the consequences of such an act.
Whoever these assailants were, they were in for a round of trouble, and they were the cause of everything that would happen to them now and all that I would ensure they would face at my hands. I winked at her. "Get ready," I said. "It's about time for a fight. I hope you're not scared," I told her, frowning as I raised an eyebrow, wondering what she was thinking and why she looked so panicked.
"No, not scared," she told me, though her expression denied that. I shrugged. Well, if she didn't have any fear, that would be for the best, but somehow I thought that that was a bit impossible for her at the moment. She was sure to be scared of one thing or another because of the look I could see on her face—it was undoubtedly clear, no way I could ever mistake that expression.
After spending a couple of seconds to think, I asked her once again, "I hope you have complete grasp on how to use your powers."
She looked surprised at my question now. "Of course," she said, though her expression revealed some doubts. I didn't know why she would be doubtful at all, but I decided that I should believe her if she already thought that she had the hang of it all.
"Fine then," I said, nodding in agreement. "If you are ready, we can do this now," I told her with a smile as I stopped the car, ready for the action that would soon ensue.
