"No! I won't join you!" Alex shouted, his voice echoing through the empty street. He couldn't believe what Ethan was asking him to do. Join him? Join Sara? After everything they had done? Never.
Ethan's face darkened. "You're making a mistake, Alex," he said, his voice hardening. "You don't know what you're throwing away."
"I know exactly what I'm doing," Alex retorted. "I'm choosing love. I'm choosing right over wrong."
"Love?" Ethan scoffed. "Love is weakness, Alex. It'll get you killed."
"Maybe," Alex said. "But it's worth fighting for."
Suddenly, a spotlight shone down on them, blinding them. A voice boomed through a megaphone. "Alex Rivera, come out with your hands up! You are under arrest!"
Alex's heart sank. The police. They had found him.
He looked at Ethan, his eyes filled with desperation. "Run, Alex," Ethan said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "Get out of here. Save yourself."
"But what about you?" Alex asked.
Ethan smiled sadly. "Don't worry about me," he said. "Just go. Live your life."
Alex hesitated for a moment, then turned and ran, disappearing into the maze of streets. He didn't know where he was going, but he knew he had to get away.
He ran for what felt like hours, his lungs burning, his legs aching. Finally, he reached a familiar building. Ethan's apartment.
He didn't know why he had come here, but he felt drawn to it, like a moth to a flame. He climbed the stairs to Ethan's apartment and knocked on the door, his heart pounding.
The door opened, and Ethan stood there, his eyes wide with surprise. "Alex? What are you doing here?" he asked. "I thought you ran."
"I did," Alex said. "But I couldn't leave you. Not like that."
Ethan smiled, a genuine smile that reached his eyes. "Come in," he said, stepping aside.
Alex entered the apartment, his eyes scanning the familiar surroundings. It was small and messy, but it was home. Or at least, it felt like home.
"What are you doing here, Ethan?" Alex asked. "Why are you helping me?"
Ethan sighed. "I don't know, Alex," he said. "I just… I can't let you get hurt. Not by Sara."
"But you were with her," Alex said, confused. "You were helping her."
Ethan shook his head. "I was pretending," he said. "I had to gain her trust, so I could protect you."
Alex stared at him, his mind reeling. "You mean… you're not really with her?"
Ethan smiled. "Never was," he said. "I'm with you, Alex. Always have been, always will be."
Relief washed over Alex, so intense that it almost brought him to his knees. He ran to Ethan and hugged him tight, burying his face in his shoulder.
"I love you, Ethan," he whispered. "So much."
"I love you too, Alex," Ethan said, holding him close. "More than anything."
They stayed like that for a long time, just holding each other, their hearts beating as one. Then, Alex pulled away.
"I need to get some clothes," he said. "I can't keep wearing this."
Ethan nodded. "I'll help you," he said.
They walked to Alex's house, their hearts pounding with every step. They knew the police were still out there, searching for them.
They snuck into Alex's room and grabbed a bag, filling it with clothes and toiletries. Then, they snuck back out, their hearts racing.
Back at Ethan's apartment, Alex unpacked his bag, his eyes scanning the small space. It was hard to believe that he was actually here, with Ethan, starting a new life.
"It's not much," Ethan said, watching him. "But it's home."
"It's perfect," Alex said, smiling. "As long as I'm with you."
They spent the rest of the day together, talking, laughing, and just enjoying each other's company. They were nervous, scared, and uncertain about the future, but they were also happy. For the first time in a long time, they were truly happy.
As darkness fell, they curled up on the couch together, watching a movie. Alex leaned his head against Ethan's shoulder, his eyes heavy with sleep.
"I'm tired," he mumbled.
"I know," Ethan said, stroking his hair. "Go to sleep. I'll watch over you."
Alex closed his eyes, trusting Ethan to keep him safe. He drifted off to sleep, his mind filled with dreams of a future where they could finally be together, without fear, without danger, without Sara.
Suddenly, he was jolted awake by a loud crash. He sat up, his heart pounding.
"What was that?" he asked, his voice trembling.
Ethan was already on his feet, his eyes scanning the room. "I don't know," he said. "Stay here. I'll check it out."
He crept to the door and opened it, peering into the hallway. Then, he gasped.
"Alex," he said, his voice filled with terror. "Get out here! Now!"
Alex ran to the door and looked out. What he saw made his blood run cold.
The hallway was filled with smoke. Flames were leaping from the apartment across the hall. And standing in the doorway, holding a gas can and a lighter, was Sara. She smiled, a wide, crazed smile that sent shivers down Alex's spine.
"Hello, boys," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "Time to play with fire."
