"Fire! Ethan, we have to get out!" Alex yelled, grabbing Ethan's hand. Smoke filled the hallway, making it hard to see and even harder to breathe. Sara stood there, a crazy look in her eyes, blocking their only way out.
Ethan didn't hesitate. He kicked the door shut, hoping to buy them some time. "We can't go that way," he said, coughing. "We have to find another way out."
Alex looked around the small apartment, his mind racing. The windows! They could climb out the windows!
He ran to the nearest window and threw it open, gasping for fresh air. Smoke billowed out, but it was better than nothing.
"Help me!" he shouted to Ethan, struggling to lift the heavy window frame.
Ethan rushed over and helped him, and together they managed to open the window wide enough to climb through.
"It's a long drop," Ethan said, peering out. "But it's better than burning alive."
They climbed out the window and onto the fire escape, the metal cold beneath their feet. Flames were already licking at the building, and the heat was intense.
"We have to go down," Alex said, pointing to the ladder. "Hurry!"
They climbed down the fire escape, their hands slipping on the metal rungs. Smoke billowed around them, making it hard to see.
Suddenly, the fire escape groaned, and Alex felt it start to give way beneath him. "Ethan!" he shouted, his voice filled with panic. "It's going to collapse!"
Ethan looked up, his eyes wide with terror. "Jump, Alex!" he yelled. "Jump now!"
Alex didn't hesitate. He closed his eyes and jumped, landing with a thud on the ground below. He looked up, his heart pounding, and saw Ethan jump after him.
They landed together, sprawling on the ground, coughing and gasping for air. They scrambled to their feet and ran, putting as much distance as possible between themselves and the burning building.
Finally, they stopped, their lungs burning, their bodies aching. They looked back at the apartment building, watching as the flames consumed it.
"She tried to kill us," Alex said, his voice trembling. "She really tried to kill us."
Ethan put his arm around him, holding him tight. "I know," he said. "But we're alive. That's all that matters."
They stood there for a long time, just holding each other, their hearts beating as one. Then, Alex pulled away.
"What do we do now?" he asked. "We can't keep running forever."
Ethan sighed. "I don't know, Alex," he said. "But I promise, we'll figure it out. Together."
They walked to a nearby park and sat down on a bench, trying to catch their breath. The park was quiet and peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaos they had just escaped.
"I'm hungry," Alex said, breaking the silence. "And I could really use a shower."
Ethan smiled. "Me too," he said. "I know just the place."
He led Alex to a small, cozy diner a few blocks away. It was nothing fancy, but it was warm and inviting.
"This is it," Ethan said, opening the door. "Our first date."
Alex laughed, a nervous laugh. "Our first date? After everything we've been through?"
"Why not?" Ethan said, shrugging. "We deserve a little bit of normal, don't you think?"
They sat down at a booth and ordered burgers and fries. As they waited for their food, they looked at each other, a mix of nervousness and excitement in their eyes.
"So," Alex said, breaking the silence. "This is kind of weird, isn't it?"
Ethan laughed. "Yeah, it is," he said. "We've known each other forever, but we've never actually been on a date."
"I don't even know what to talk about," Alex confessed.
"Just talk about whatever comes to mind," Ethan said, smiling. "Like we always do."
They started talking, about their childhood memories, their favorite movies, their hopes and dreams for the future. It was awkward at first, but as they talked, they started to relax, and the conversation flowed more easily.
They laughed, they joked, and they shared stories that they had never told anyone else. It was like they were falling in love all over again, discovering new things about each other that they had never known before.
As they ate their burgers and fries, Alex realized something. This was perfect. It didn't matter that they were on the run, that Sara was still out there, that their lives were in danger. All that mattered was that they were together, in this moment, sharing a meal and a laugh.
After they finished eating, Ethan took Alex to his apartment, a small, cozy space that he had managed to find a few days earlier. It wasn't much, but it was safe, and it was theirs.
They took showers, changed into clean clothes, and curled up on the couch together, watching a movie. It was a simple, ordinary evening, but it was the most wonderful evening of Alex's life.
As he lay there, with Ethan's arms around him, he couldn't help but feel grateful. Grateful for Ethan, for their love, for their chance to be together.
But as he drifted off to sleep, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. The air was thick with tension, and the silence was deafening.
Suddenly, he was jolted awake by a loud crash. He sat up, his heart pounding.
"What was that?" he asked, his voice trembling.
Ethan was already on his feet, his eyes scanning the room. "I don't know," he said. "Stay here. I'll check it out."
He crept to the door and opened it, peering into the hallway. Then, he gasped.
"Alex," he said, his voice filled with terror. "Get out here! Now!"
Alex ran to the door and looked out. What he saw made his blood run cold.
The hallway was empty. But at the end of the hall, standing in the shadows, was a figure. A figure that Alex knew all too well. It was Sara. But she wasn't alone. Standing beside her, looking pale and shaken, was Alex's mom.
"Hello, Alex," Sara said, her voice dripping with malice. "I have a surprise for you."
She pushed Alex's mom forward, and Alex saw that she was holding a gun to her head. "If you don't come with me, Alex," Sara said, "I'll kill her. Right here, right now.”
