Chapter 38 It Wasn't You... But I Don't Believe That Person!
Jennifer stared at Gerald in disbelief, while Gerald closed his eyes.
"Gerald! What do you mean we're going back to your penthouse? Didn't we agree that from here we would meet another doctor at a different hospital to check on Alex's condition! Remember, you promised me!" said Jennifer, crossing her arms over her chest.
Gerald, who looked tired, opened his eyes and looked at Jennifer with a hint of annoyance.
"How can you bear to take Alex, who is currently fast asleep, just to have him checked? He looks fine now, doesn't he? Can't you see he needs rest right now? Besides, didn't you see what happened earlier, huh? They will definitely chase after you and Alex! And I don't know who leaked that you were there and all that cheap gossip! The situation doesn't allow you to go anywhere right now! You should rest and hide for a while, until I find a solution to quell the false reports! And my priority is to protect you right now! It's too dangerous for you to go anywhere, especially without my escort or my men! Do you understand now?!" Gerald said, raising his voice slightly.
Jennifer swallowed hard, seeing Gerald's angry reaction. Jennifer realised she had been too reckless this time, she hadn't thought that this would endanger Alex and herself.
'But it's not my fault, is it? Who told him to be so famous? How rich and famous is Gerald Williams anyway?' Jennifer whispered to herself.
Gerald looked at her gently after letting out a long sigh.
"I know it's not your fault, but please understand, there are many people who want to bring me down with dirty tricks! Like hurting the people I love around me. Please understand this time! Give me a chance to find out who did this! When the situation allows, then we can talk again about Alex's condition! Or I'll bring in another doctor to examine Alex myself, how about that?" said Gerald, as if reading Jennifer's thoughts.
Jennifer nodded slowly, "I'm sorry, maybe I was too hasty without thinking about the consequences? I just want what's best for Alex."
Jennifer stroked her son's hair, whose head was resting on Gerald's lap, while Alex's legs were on Jennifer's thighs.
"I know... never mind, don't think about it anymore! Leave it to me!" Gerald said softly.
Jennifer could only nod. Gerald was about to turn back to the front when Jennifer spoke again.
"Do you want to sleep? Let me take care of Alex..." Jennifer felt bad towards Gerald.
Gerald smiled slightly, "No need, Alex will wake up! Just leave him like this until we get home."
"Okay! Please let me know if... your legs cramp up, okay?" Jennifer looked even more guilty.
"Don't worry! Do you think I'll get cramps just because Alex has a small head, huh? Do you still doubt my strength?" Gerald winked playfully at Jennifer.
"I... no... what are you talking about, Gerald?!" Jennifer turned to look at the car window, her back to Gerald.
"Hahaha... I'm joking! Don't be tense, okay? Sorry for speaking a little harshly earlier! Are you okay?" Gerald's tone softened.
'Aish! Alpha Gerald apologising? And this is the second time? Speaking softly? I can't believe it unless I hear it myself!' John, who overheard their conversation, suddenly choked and coughed.
"Just focus on the road ahead, John! Don't think about anything else!" Gerald suddenly spoke.
“Sorry, Mr. Williams, okay.” John looked ahead again.
‘How did he know what I was thinking? That’s really amazing!’ John thought to himself.
Meanwhile, Jennifer watched Gerald’s every move, ‘This guy is like a chameleon! One minute angry and annoyed, the next soft and flirtatious? Really strange!'
"What are you thinking? Do you want to try it here? But Alex is between us right now... so I think... It's not appropriate, is it?" Gerald seemed to be thinking as he held his chin, which wasn't itchy.
"Gerald...!!!!" Jennifer lowered her voice but glared at Gerald.
"Okay... okay... I was just joking! You're so cute when you're angry! And I love seeing it!" Gerald smiled broadly.
Jennifer's cheeks and face, all the way to her ears, began to turn red.
"Especially when you're embarrassed like now! Your whole face is red!" Gerald held back his laughter.
Jennifer turned away in annoyance.
"Hahaha... sorry! Okay, I'll stop teasing you!" Gerald exclaimed, his laughter subsiding.
After that, Gerald didn't say anything else. Gerald began to close his eyes when he heard Jennifer's voice again. He opened his eyes and turned to Jennifer.
"Do you know who did it? I mean, who spread the cheap rumours and leaked our whereabouts?" asked Jennifer.
Gerald shook his head, "I don't know! I'm not sure if I was ever really sure that Dixon was behind everything! But now... I think someone else was involved! It seems like he was angry because I kicked him out!"
"You mean Captain Bryan? That's impossible! Could it be one of your men? Or someone else, maybe? Besides, where would Captain Bryan... know? " Jennifer then fell silent, her face turning pale again as she remembered something.
Gerald looked ahead and took another breath, "If it was one of my men, it couldn't be! They know the consequences of revealing my secrets! Their bodies might not be recognisable when found! Isn't that right, John?"
"That's right, sir! How could we dare!" John replied again. 'Why is he accusing me? It's making me nervous! He knows very well that as his Beta, I would never betray him!'
"But it's possible, isn't it, that it was a guard or one of the new people you trust?" Jennifer tried to guess.
“Impossible! Before being appointed as my trusted men, John had trained and tested them rigorously! So it couldn’t be from my side!” Gerald slowly turned to Jennifer with a sharp gaze.
“Why are you looking at me like that? I’m definitely not the culprit! There’s no way I would do something that would hurt my child, right?” Jennifer said firmly.
"I know you're not the culprit... but it could be... someone who accidentally took advantage of your innocence!" Gerald said softly but pointedly.
"Me? Who? I didn't contact anyone... except... wait... it can't be!" Jennifer suddenly remembered something, her face turning pale as she looked at Gerald.
Gerald had already guessed it; Jenny must have contacted that person.
"You... are accusing... No way! If it's true, then I'll call him right now!" said Jennifer, reaching for her mobile phone in her bag.
Gerald held her hand, "No need to rush... just play along! I want to see how far he will go!"
"But I don't want you to accuse me of something I didn't do, Gerald! Do you have a plan?" Jennifer looked at Gerald.
"Don't worry, I know who you are! Just so you know, I trust you more than my own life! You're not the culprit!"
"Thank you," Jennifer said softly, touched.
“But I don’t trust that person! Of course, I have a plan! Come closer…” Gerald said again, gesturing for Jennifer to come closer.
With a little hesitation, Jennifer moved towards Gerald.
“So my plan is…”
