Chapter 39 Jennifer's rejection of Gerald's plan
Gerald approached and whispered to Jennifer, who tried to listen to what he was saying.
"Do you understand?" asked Gerald shortly after he had explained his plan.
Jennifer fell silent and then looked at Gerald uncertainly. "But I'm not sure he would do that... I'm sure he wasn't the one who gave the information to the reporters. It could be that the reporter was there by coincidence, right? I'm not sure he's the one who did it, Gerald! You'd better investigate further, how about that?"
Gerald took another deep breath before speaking to Jennifer. Gerald was convinced that Captain Bryan Smith was at least involved in the incident. However, he didn't understand why Jennifer trusted Captain Bryan so much.
"It's up to you. I leave the decision to you. After all, I don't have any evidence that he was the one who provoked the reporter. Maybe you're right, it's just my feeling! Never mind, we shouldn't argue about this anymore. I'll still ask my people to investigate it! You don't need to worry, okay?" Gerald realised he couldn't force his will on Jennifer, besides not wanting Jennifer to be disturbed by this and think about it too much. Gerald also tried to create a comfortable environment for Jennifer. Gerald hoped that what he was doing could slowly restore his wife's memory.
Jennifer looked at Gerald, but Gerald's gaze was very calm. This only made her feel more uneasy and restless. Jennifer tried to think hard, and finally came to a decision.
"At least give me time to think about it, okay? After all, Captain Bryan has helped me so much. He was the first person to offer to take us in when you... You know... when my flat was broken into! In this city, I have no friends or family. Captain Bryan was my first friend. Hmm... I mean... this isn't easy for me. I just feel that he has been so good to me, so I never thought he was that kind of person! I hope you will give me a chance to consider it, okay?" Jennifer tried to look Gerald in the eye.
Gerald smiled warmly and patted Jennifer's hand. "I understand, that's why I won't force you! But please be careful, okay? Whatever your decision is, I will respect it!"
Jennifer nodded. "Thank you, Gerald!"
Gerald smiled again, "No need to thank me, it's my duty to look after you! Now... go to sleep! You need some rest too! We still have a long way to go; we need to take a plane to get to my penthouse!"
"What do you mean? Isn't your penthouse still around LA? Then why do we need to take a plane? Where are we actually going?" said Jennifer, confused.
"We're going to New York City on my private jet!" said Gerald again.
"WHAT?? Are you crazy?" said Jennifer, staring at him.
"Why don't we just stay in LA, Gerald? I mean, I'm sure they'll still have trouble finding you if we're in LA! Or we could rent a regular flat around LA why does it have to be New York City? I don't want to!" Jennifer began to look annoyed.
Gerald smiled before finally looking seriously at Jennifer.
"Over the past few years, the journalists have probably found out about my assets in LA. I originally wanted to take you to my penthouse on the 51st floor of The Ritz Carlton Residences, but that penthouse is small, and I think the journalists would find us there quickly! So I decided we should go to New York City. Just think of it as a holiday, okay? Not many people know about that penthouse, and I'm sure the journalists won't suspect us if we go there. If we stay in the LA area, they'll easily find us, and I don't want you to feel uncomfortable and be in danger because of the conflicting reports. At least until my men calm the reports down," Gerald said again.
Jennifer sighed resignedly, “But… Alex has to go back to school… in…”
“A week, right? I think that’s enough time! Alex was suspended from school and told to rest at home for a week because of a fight, right? And I haven’t had a chance to ask you about it. What really happened?” Gerald asked, stroking Alex’s hair gently again.
Jennifer was surprised, "How did you know?"
Gerald turned his head lazily, and Jennifer finally realised something. It was very easy for someone like Gerald Williams to find out such small information, wasn't it?
"Ah, yes... I forgot! You're Gerald Williams! Of course, it's very easy for you to find out something like that! I'll tell you about it later!" Jennifer sat up indifferently.
"Sorry! It's not like that. I did ask someone to find out about you and Alex... to confirm something. Are you really the people I've been looking for all this time? And it turns out my guess was right, even though I was late coming to the flat you rented yesterday!" Gerald said slowly.
“What do you mean? That I’m the one who did the insemination and you’re the sperm donor or Alex’s biological father, is that it?” Jennifer tried to summarise everything she was thinking.
Gerald looked sad but then pulled his lips into a smile, 'That's not it actually, only you believe the insemination story! The person I've been looking for is... my wife, you Jenny!'
"Why are you silent? Why are you looking at me with that strange look?" Jennifer asked when she saw Gerald's incomprehensible gaze.
"Because you're beautiful?!" Gerald replied casually.
"Gerald! Stop it! I'm not joking!" Jennifer said, growing increasingly annoyed.
"I'm not joking either! You are beautiful! So what's wrong with that? Try to explain it to me!" Gerald looked at her seductively again.
Jennifer pointed her index finger at him, "You... are annoying!
Then Jennifer turned her face away and stared out the window beside her.
"I was just joking! Fine... you're right! Are you satisfied now?"
Jennifer turned back to face Gerald with a faint smile, "Satisfied enough!"
"All right, then... hmm... Get out!" said Gerald bluntly.
Jennifer looked at Gerald in disbelief, "You're kicking me out, Gerald, just because of this little thing? Didn't you say you were just joking! Why are you making a big deal out of it now?"
Gerald shook his head and started to laugh softly, covering his mouth when he realised Alex was still asleep.
"Hahaha... Oops! Sorry, Jennifer, I had to ask you to get out, not because I was angry about what happened earlier, but..." Gerald said softly.
"But what? What else could it be if not kicking me out because you told me to get out of your car... I know... I was just... hitching a ride... and..." Jennifer looked upset, her chest rising and falling.
Gerald, who was annoyed, immediately pulled Jennifer's neck and kissed her forcefully, making Jennifer even angrier.
"Gerald! What are you..."
"You can be so annoying sometimes! I told you to get out, not because I was angry or to kick you out! But we've arrived at the airport! And we have to continue our journey with my private jet! Do you want to stay here all day while I go with Alex to my penthouse? I don't mind... but..." Gerald didn't get to finish his sentence as he watched Jennifer open the car door and rush out.
"Why are you silent? Come on..."
"Huh?"
