Chapter 106

Chapter 106

I was washing my hands when there was brisk knock on the door. Smiling at his impatience, I called for him to come in. Quickly the door was thrust open, and an agitated demon came in. In one hand he had my pink satin robe that matched the one he was wearing, in the other was his phone. The display had the timer ticking off numbers. In forty-five seconds, we would know if we were going to be parents.

After I dried my hands, he helped me into my robe. Feeling a weight in the pocket, I pulled out my phone. An undoubtedly sappy smile spread across my face at his thoughtfulness. I lightly kissed him just as the timer dinged. We both swung our gazes to the stick on the counter. It was still blank. Frowning, he picked up the box which he flipped over to the instructions.

“Oh. As fast as one minute.” I watched his perfect mouth as he read. “It can take up to three minutes.

He reset the timer on his phone then set it on the counter. Wordlessly he pulled me into his arms against his chest. His head rested on top of mine as we watched the seconds tick by.

“Do we have a baby?” Kerrigan’s voice in the hall dragged our attention from the phone on the counter. We both started laughing at the imp. They were still in their lime green chef smock. But now they had a baby bjorn strapped to their chest in the same green as their smock. A shockingly realistic doll was inside of it. It had skin the color of perfectly rationed creamer to coffee. Black toffs of hair on its real looking skin. Brillant blue eyes stared hauntingly from its adorable face. An orange onesie with pumpkin

“Unknown.” I snickered. “But it looks like you do.”

They smiled proudly. “I’m preparing for the new addition!”

“How long do they stay this size? Like a month, right?” They were stroking the baby gently on the back. Caspian and I snickered.

“There’s a book you need to check out.” I giggled as I told them what they needed to go find. They popped out just as the timer went off. Clasping hands tightly, we both looked at the stick on the counter. We both sighed at the screen.

Not Pregnant was blazoned across it. I leaned against him. Not sure if it was in disappointment or relief. He was leaning against me too. “Well, there it is.”

I nodded at his words. He wrapped his arms around me to lay his head on mine. We stood there offering comfort to each other. His body was tense behind me.

“Are you disappointed?” I asked hesitantly. Just because I was freaking out didn’t mean he was. Maybe he really wanted to be a dad. Maybe he saw a baby between us as proof we were bonded. Maybe he wanted to be human.

“Yes.” He answered simply. A kiss was dropped on my head. “You would make an incredible mom. The two of us would combine into the perfect baby.”

I turned my head to kiss his lips. “It would mean we are bonded. You aren’t worried about becoming human? Never getting to bang another woman?”

He shook his head. “I’d be human if it meant I got to be with you. What could any other woman have that could surpass you?”

Crying I snuggled against him. One of his hands on my back, the other holding mine. My other hand was on his back. How could it feel like I lost something that was never real? I was surprised how much it hurt. Now I have my answer. The pain meant I wanted a baby with my demon. Too bad I wasn’t likely to get one now.

“Got it!” Kerrigan popped in, still wearing the baby, waving around The What To Expect The First Year book. They put the book on the bathroom cabinet and began to flip through it.

“How?” I stuttered out. “They were gone two minutes.”

“Don’t try to figure out imps.” Caspian just shook his head as he watched them reading. In the mirror I could see their eyes moving along the words. A finger traced along the words as they read. Their hair snakes were reading too. They were nodding in places and looked at each other a few times. The one that I thought was Glen just sneered at the words. “Wait! They don’t walk for a year?”

“Sometimes longer.” I told the imp from my position against Caspian’s chest. Kerrigan hadn’t looked at us yet or the stick. They seemed to believe there was no doubt I was carrying the demon’s spawn in me.  Their snakes frowned at me in the mirror.

“Wait! They wear diapers for years?” Kerrigan looked up in horror. I nodded at the imp with a slight smile.

“But you don’t have to worry about it.” I pointed at the stick that said I wasn’t pregnant. The imp’s eyes followed my fingers. They frowned at the words. Then shrugged.

“Too soon I guess.” They picked up the book. “I’m going to go start on the nursey.”

Caspian and I exchanged confused looks. The test clearly said no baby. Why were they so sure there was a bun in my oven?

“Do you get the feeling they know something we don’t?” I asked the hot dream man behind me.

“Never underestimate an imp.” He frowned at the test. “Especially when they are that sure.”

My hand splayed out on my stomach. Caspian put a hand over it, lacing our fingers.
