Chapter 105
Chapter 105
Now alone, I looked at the stick in my hand. The repercussions of what it meant pounding in my head. I could be carrying a demon a spawn. Frantically I tried to remember what I had read back when I was researching maras. I know there was something about pregnancy in there. Ugh. Why didn’t I bring my phone with me? Of course, who stops to grab their phone when a super-hot demon is chasing them with naughty things on their minds.
Was I ready to be a parent? I had written off having children given my age. I had a college degree from a respected university, bought a kick ass lake house, had a cat, and a sports car that cost six figures. A life long best friend. Close relationship with my family. I was fulfilled. Wasn’t I?
My hand wandered to my rounded abdomen. There could already be a baby in there. A little interracial slash interspecies hybrid baby. Oh God! What if it could shape shift from birth? Drop off a cute little dark headed boy and pick up a platinum blonde girl from daycare. Or if it could paralysis people like Caspian? How could I discipline a child that could freeze me in my tracks?
None of that answered the question of if I wanted a child. Was I child free by choice or circumstance? Romantic entanglements had never turned out well for me. I’d never been married. My longest relationship was four years. Nothing ever felt right to bring child into it so I’d always been careful about practicing safe sex. Until now. But who thought to wear a condom with a man that might just be in your dreams?
Caspian had never seemed to be concerned about it. So, I hadn’t worried about it either. None of the maras had seemed overly worried about pregnancy. If they weren’t, then why should I? Ugh. My mama was gonna be so disappointed in me. Who gets accidentally knocked up at my age?
I could just picture how that conversation would go.
“Hey mom!” I’d start with.
“Hello, honey.” She’d respond. “What’s new with you? I haven’t heard from you much lately.”
She’d chuckle. Tell me dad had twenty on me having a secret boyfriend and that’s why they hadn’t heard from me lately. My brother had twenty on me being back with Rich and not wanting to admit it. Of course my sister would have money on me being a lesbian. She always had to be a little shit stirrer.
“Well, dad is right.” I’d have to fess up. “I’ve been secretly dating an incubus and now I’m pregnant with his spawn and I’m not sure what is going to come out of me.”
Yep. That should kick a hornet’s nest in my traditional family. While they agreed everyone had a right to live how they wanted to, as long as it didn’t hurt anyone, I didn’t think that would extend to birthing a demon. We went to church as a family for all major Christian holidays.
Oh! What if he wants to get married? Could he get married in a church? Did I have to tell the minister that he was an incubus and technically he was marrying me to a demon?
I couldn’t breathe. Too much was riding on the stick in my hand. Based on the directions, the little display would say Pregnant or Not Pregnant. Picturing the words Pregnant on that little screen had me hyperventilating. What happened to the good ole days with one or two stripes? Or if it turned blue?
Frantically I tried to catch my breath. Oh God. Oh God. I couldn’t handle this. Suddenly, strong arms were wrapped around me, bringing the scent of mulberry with them. I was turned so my face was buried in a strong muscled chest. One hand on my lower back, the other holding my head against him.
I hadn’t heard him come in, I’d been to lost to my freak out. He of course always in tune with my feelings, knew I needed him. I trembled in his embrace as I started to relax. Hadn’t realized how tense I had become.
“Shhh.” He soothed me as his hand on my back rubbed in small circles. “Whatever it says, we will deal with it. Together.”
I nodded as I breathed in his scent. Mulberry now both aroused me and soothed me. Same for his voice and touch. This man was my other half. If I was in fact carrying his child, it would be ok because we would be together.
“What’s the word?” Kerrigan’s voice came from the hall. Caspian turned so we could see the imp. They looked at us in confusion. “Are those happy tears or panicked tears?”
“Panicked.” I wiped my face. “I haven’t taken it yet.”
“Hurry up and pee on it already!” They clapped their hands. “I can’t wait to take care of a baby!”
They popped out without another word. I chuckled. I’d forgotten to take into account the house imp. If I was knocked up, there would be plenty of help. I wondered if their hair snakes could be child proofed. Grabbing Caspian’s beard, I brought his face down for a kiss. Then I shoved him out of the bathroom. I wasn’t ready to pee in front of him.
Taking a bracing breath, I unwrapped the stick and put it in position.
