Chapter 10 CHAPTER 10: Fracture

Chapter 10 CHAPTER 10: Fracture
Kae's POV

I ran my hands through my hair, and I didn't even know if it was out of frustration, or out of something else.

But I knew that I had made a huge mistake by even going for that little meeting by the council. I should have just pretended not to know anything. But then, I went there and exaggerated things more than they were supposed to have been.

“Oh, goddess,” I muttered underneath my breath. Nothing was going as planned. Nothing at all.

Students that were walking past were looking at me as they walked past. If I wanted to chase them away, I was sure as hell that I would have bared my teeth in their direction, but I wasn't even in the mood for that. I just washed to ask Elizabeth to forgive me.

The way she looked at me like I was a mistake standing in front of her. It wasn't supposed to have an effect on me. But it did. More than it was ever supposed to.

I was standing outside, as I waited for her to walk past. I wanted to talk to her while she made her way back to her dorm. Just as her face crossed my mind, I felt her presence. And my wolf stirred.

Not yet.

She looked over in my direction, and I was sure as hell that she wanted to walk past me. She did.

I reached out for her, holding on to her wrist, and her skin burned to touch. She turned to look at me through the sides of her eyes, and I felt it again. All three elements in her. She was just good at hiding it. She was good at not showing exactly what she was.

“What?” She asked. She talked to the other Kings at the same time, but there was something about the way she talked to me. It was backed up by hatred. And I couldn't even blame her. She could have been expelled with everything I said there.

“I just want to talk to you.” She turned to fully look at me, folding her hands across her chest.

“Then say what you have to say,” she said, making me exhale slowly.

“I shouldn't have lied.” I said, and she cocked an eyebrow. But her hands over her chest seemed to loosen.

“No,” she whispered. “You shouldn't have.”

That wasn't enough for me. I didn't know what I was looking for, but I just wanted her to talk to me. I didn't actually care what it was going to take. But I wanted me and her to be the same as before. That was too much to ask for.

But I still wanted it.

“I was just trying to-”

“Protect yourself?” She asked, cutting me off. “Yeah, I figured. You didn't want the other students to look at you differently. I figured.”

I took a step towards her, and she didn't take a step back, as she had been doing the whole day. But I could feel her whole body tense up.

“I wanted to keep things from escalating,” I said, and she pressed her lips into a thin line.

She let out a sharp laugh. “To keep the truth from being exposed?”

Yes.

There was something about the way she said it. She knew something. More than she was letting on.

“i didn't know what you were,” I said instead, and she narrowed her eyes at me.

“And now?” She asked. “Do you know what I am?”

I went silent immediately. Even now, I wasn't sure that I could define what she was. I felt something different to what the others felt. Hell, I wanted even sure that they felt anything. I was the only one that could feel things. The only one that could smell her.

And my wolf was losing its mind at the sight of her. That was supposed to be a good thing, wasn't it?

“I just know that you're not what they think you are.” I said, and she shook her head.

“That doesn't even count as an answer,” she said, and I nodded.

“I know.”

She was just about to turn away when I noticed it first. The floor that cracked underneath her feet.

“Elizabeth?” I asked, but a response didn't come from her. Her chest suddenly surged forward, and the ground cracked even further.

My wolf kicked in immediately, and I wrapped my two arms around her. Her energy threatened to push me away. I could feel the energy digging into my stomach. If I even dared to let go, I didn't know how much she was going to destroy.

So much for trying to hide the truth.

“Listen to me, Elizabeth,” I muttered into her ear, and she seemed to react.

Good. I was getting to her.

Her control just slipped. That was what it had to be, right?

“You're fine,”

I slowly turned her shoulders to make her look at me, and her eyes were fixed to the ground.

“Look at me, Elizabeth,” I said, and she raised her eyes, keeping it on me.

“I don't know what's happening to me,” she whispered, and at that point, I couldn't even see the power.

All I could see was the fear buried deep within her.

And Andy wanted to control her? That was only going to make things worse.

She needed care. And not anything that Andy wanted.

Yes, he was topping the class, but that didn't mean that he was logically smart. Especially in this case? There was nothing about what he said in the other room that was good enough.

He was just going to make things complicated. It didn't help that Lucif didn't even say much the other day.

Of course, he was cunning. But I didn't think that he was making any plans in his head. Not when he looked like he was about to just head out and take a smoke.

Elizabeth's eyes were still on me, like she was waiting for some kind of assurance. There was only one in my head. One that I wasn't even supposed to say, but that was the only thing willing to come out of my mouth.

“You're not alone,” I said, and she fling my hands away from her shoulders.

Right in front of my eyes, I watched as the scared girl disappeared. The person that was looking at me had her expression hardened.

“Elizabeth,” I whispered again, and it did nothing to help.

“I am,” she whispered back. “I'm very much alone.”

With that, she turned on her heel and walked away. This time I let her.
