Chapter 11 CHAPTER 11: THE HUNT BEGINS
Chapter 11 CHAPTER 11: THE HUNT BEGINS
Elizabeth's POV
By the time I got back to my dorm, I exhaled hard, looking over my bed. I collapsed on the bed, not saying a word more as I tried to catch my breath.
All the Kings have tried to talk to me. All of them except Andy. And I was actually glad that he didn't even try. Because I would have lost control.
How the hell did all this happen? I went from being powerless one day, to reacting to things that I wasn't supposed to. I could barely keep things under control.
My phone buzzed, and I looked down just in time to see the caller ID. It was my mom. Everything in me didn't even feel like answering her.
I turned the screen of the phone down, but it continued ringing for three minutes. When I was sure that I had enough, I swiped right, pressing the phone to my ear, even if I was sure that I wanted to switch it off.
What if I mistakenly squeezed the phone into pieces while we talked?
“Hello,” I answered in a whisper.
“Where have you been?” My mom screamed over the other end, and I couldn't tell if she was actually screaming, or if she was just excited. Either way, she was still screaming.
“I was getting some assignments done,” I answered, and she huffed.
“Anyway, I just called to check up on you. Your sister was in your school, right?” She asked, and I felt my hands ball into fists, pulling my bedsheets towards myself.
“You were the one that sent Marian, weren't you?” I asked, and my mom sighed.
“You know just how attached Marian is to you. You can't get mad that she came to see you.”
Marian?
Attached to me? That spiteful bitch.
Those weren't even supposed to be in the same sentence.
I plastered a fake smile on my face anyway, even if I knew that my mom couldn't see me.
“Of course,” I said, and she gave me a satisfied grunt.
“I hope you're fitting in,” she said, and I froze. Fitting in was the one thing that I could never achieve in this school.
“Quite well,” I said, and I could feel tears prick the back of my eyes.
“Alright then,” my mom said, and I felt my throat close. She hung up immediately, like she didn't even want to hear anything else.
It was hard to believe that she didn't send me to the school just because she wanted to get me off her back. But I had always been the good child. The one who barely ever complained.
I stripped off my clothes, looking down at my arm again. The mark wasn't there, thankfully.
I walked into the bathroom, glancing at the other bed at the side of the room for just a second. I was supposed to have a roommate. But of course, I was the only powerless person in the school.
Only that I wasn't as powerless as I thought. But they didn't know that yet.
And that was one of the things that made this whole thing iconic.
As I walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower, I allowed the hot water drum against my skin, and wet my hair.
My hair was clinging to my back and for the first time in a while it made my skin crawl. I ached to cut my hair, but I quickly pushed the thought away.
I just found out that I was anything but powerless. But that didn't mean I was supposed to be going crazy.
I got out of the shower, putting on good clothes, before laying down. I had my hands on my book, but didn't even open it as I drifted off to sleep.
I was an hour late to class.
Bad start for the day. By the time I was back on the main campus, I noticed the screens that were in almost all corners, with bold words written on the screen.
THE TRIBRID HAS AWAKENED.
Right next to the words, was a blurry face all over the screens. I could identify the picture staring back at me. And it was me.
No, no, no.
I felt something hum underneath my skin, and all eyes were on me, as they whispered.
“They have to be kidding us. There's no way there's a tribrid.”
“So they're trying to tell me that the one we've been waiting for all this time is a girl?”
I swallowed hard.
All of this was wrong. I looked around the compound, trying to see if there was even one King around. One that would come and support me. But there was nothing. Of course.
I wouldn't have been shocked if they were hiding in the shadows, watching me.
At least the students didn't know what it was me just yet. They were that dumb.
I walked across the courtyard, and people seemed to step away.
It had to be because of everything that happened between me and the vampire senior the day before.
Just as I was about to step into the school building, an image flashed in my memory.
I saw myself in some kind of circle. Unconscious. My pulse spiked immediately.
No, no.
That wasn't supposed to happen yet. I was in public.
I walked even faster, finally making it into the building. As soon as I walked in, I saw Jasmine..
For some reason, she had her head cocked to the side, as she smiled at me like her life depended on it.
No. I wasn't about to fall for any of that.
It was new. And I couldn't even trust her to begin with.
I pushed myself to keep walking. There was no way I was going to stop to talk to her.
I didn't lower my gaze as I walked through. Instead, my chin was tipped perfectly. As it should be.
Now that I was there in the school, I knew that it was never about settling. It was never about fitting in or trying to survive the school.
It was about surviving the people in the school. The Kings and the Queens. The ones who ruled. They were the ones who I was supposed to survive. And nothing less.
My wrist burned again. Stronger this time. I looked down at it, hissing in pain. Just in time to see the mark flicker again.
I was supposed to hide it behind my skirt. But I didn't. Instead, I left it out there in the open. Whoever noticed, could see it. I didn't care anymore.
If they were going to hunt me, then they should know what they were getting into.
Suddenly, my senses picked on something. Three people. And their eyes were fixed on my back.
I could feel the power coming from them.
My knees buckled for just a second, and I smirked as I continued to walk.
For the first time since I walked into the school, I didn't feel like a prey. I felt like a fucking storm.
