Chapter 40 – Wait For Me

“I was born for you. I was born to love you and to protect you. If you leave me, my life will also leave my heart.” A sorrowful voice stated.

“That’s why I beg you. Please… don’t leave me. Otherwise, I won’t be able to live anymore.” The man said as tears flow from his eyes. Anyone could see how his heart was breaking as he pleaded the woman to stay.

Iris blinked as she felt her eyes warmed as her tears threatened to fall. However, she bit her lips to stop her tears from falling. She couldn’t help but cry as she watched the heart breaking scene in front of her.

Elliot’s heart stung as he looked at Iris’ face. He couldn’t help but to reach over for her and put her on his lap to comfort her.

“Let’s change the channel of the TV. I don’t like seeing you sad.” Elliot said as he gently caressed her hair.

“Hubby… this drama is pretty sad. I feel bad for the male lead.” Iris replied as she leaned her weight on Elliot’s chest.

It was already evening and Iris three pieces of cinnamon rolls after dinner. Thus, she was too full and couldn’t sleep right away. As a result, the couple decided to watch TV before going to bed.

Elliot kissed Iris’ hair to comfort her. He knew she was just sad because of the TV drama, still, his heart hurts that he wished he could change the story line to a happy one to make Iris happy.

“I mean… he was living a good life. He had a great family and has a couple of true friends. Suddenly, cupid hits him with an arrow and he fell heads over heels for the female. He even claims that he cannot live without her.” Iris commented.

Elliot blinked as he listened to Iris’ sentence. Then, he put his head on her shoulders and hugged her close to him.

“How come you feel sad for him?” Elliot softly asked her.

“I think that he didn’t have a choice. He was compelled to love the girl. He didn’t even have the option of choosing the girl that he wanted to fall in love with.”

Iris told him. Her words left Elliot in deep thought for a second before he told her, “But I think he is the lucky one.”

Iris tilted her head to look at Elliot’s face before she curiously asked, “How come you say so?”

“Humans… have the options of choosing the one they will love. However, most often than not, they choose to love the wrong person. Either because of personality differences or many other reason, humans always separate. They break their relationships and in the process, they break their hearts.” Elliot mumbled. “If… cupid or another higher being tells someone who their soulmate is right away, wouldn’t that save the humans from too much heartache?” He added.

Iris pondered for a moment before she said, “I guess you’re right.”

“However, cupid doesn’t really exist and neither does soulmates” She quietly told Elliot.

Elliot sighed before he extended his hand and touch Iris’ belly.

“If I tell you… that soulmates do exist… would you belief me?” Elliot said after a few seconds of silence.

“Well… what is a soulmate?” Iris asked him before she yawned.

Elliot stayed silent for a few moments before he quietly said, “A soulmate is the irreplaceable other half of your soul. The only one who can complete you.”

“Is that so?” Iris said. “Then, if I can have a soulmate, I will choose you.” Iris added as she closed her eyes, seemingly about to fall asleep.

Elliot tenderly held Iris and allowed her to sleep in his arms. About a couple of minutes later, he laid both of their bodies to the bed before he whispered, “I also hope that you will choose me… because my soulmate can only be you.”

The sun was already bright when Iris woke up the next day. Surprisingly, after a few seconds of looking around, Elliot was nowhere to be seen in the room. Iris bit her lower lip before she decided to dial his phone. Fortunately, Elliot answered before the first ring was done.

“Good morning, my love. You are awake?”

Iris felt her cheeks warm. Recently, Elliot started calling her “my love.” She knew it was a normal term of endearment between spouses. However, she still feels butterflies in her stomach whenever Elliot said it.

“Yes.” Iris managed to say after a few seconds. “You went to work?”

“There is an emergency that I have to personally handle.” Elliot told her. “I’m sorry. It was urgent this morning and I couldn’t tell you.”

“It’s alright.” Iris hurriedly told him. She knew that he was in charge of a large conglomerate and already expected that he would always be very busy. Still, she felt that she suddenly missed him so she asked, “When will you return?”

Elliot didn’t answer right away. However, Iris felt that Elliot was smiling at her question.

“I cannot tell for now. The problem might be solved today or it might take a few days. I will try to finish this right away so that I return to you the soonest.”

Elliot answered.

Iris felt a little sad but cheered herself up thinking that her hubby is really capable so she was sure that he would solve the problem fast.

“Alright. Hubby I will wait for you. Be careful.” Iris reminded him.

“Yes. Wait for me. I’ll return fast for you, my love.” Elliot gently replied.
