Chapter: The Killer on the Loose

Chapter: The Killer on the Loose

ANGELO

I looked in the mirror removing the temporary blonde dye from my dark hair and then the makeup, the image of Celeste coming to my head over and over again.

I couldn't believe that I had really seen her, that she was here, that dress she was wearing, I never imagined her dressed like that.

I always tried to forget her, to appease the memory of her, but she had appeared without warning, stirring up my damned world, one that was falling apart without being able to avoid it.

I finished cleaning her face, removing all the makeup and then I looked at myself in the mirror passing a paper napkin, I would simply ignore her, avoid looking at her at all costs and everything would continue as before.

Everything would be okay, she wouldn't destroy me like she did again.

CELESTE

While we were in the car, Angelo had not only marked the distance with his cruel words towards me on the plane, but he also left in the other armored van.

If he wanted me to ignore him, then I was going to do it, except that there was something in my chest, like some kind of shock or emotion when I saw him again, and exchanging words with him, it felt like an eternity, I had even forgotten. I had forgotten the sound of his voice and I had also forgotten the reason why I fell so many times for those striped gray eyes, that firm look and that way of speaking or looking at me.

Would I have been the only one who felt that tension between the two of us even after so many years?

Of course it was something that we had to put aside, firstly because he was still resentful because I rejected him, abandoned him and deprived him of seeing his son, and secondly because he was still married.

A love that was never love and was impossible anyway.

When we got off at the government's private secret service station or as its acronym was; SSPG, I got off following the others who were guiding me, Angelo was in front walking quickly, and then he entered the bathroom, disappearing from my sight. I sighed, this visit to this place would be more difficult than I thought.

I was ushered into the main office, the office where the nameplate on the door read, “Director Green.” As soon as he entered, he was behind his desk, his phone to his ear while he seemed to yell at someone for his ineptitude, in his other hand he carried a cigarette filling the entire office with a horrible stench of smoke.

I took a seat across from him, crossing my arms, regretting having brought a short, tight, and vulgar dress.

Director Green hung up and put out his cigarette in the ashtray to look at me and say:

"Hello, it's nice to see you again Celeste, how is your baby?"

Taste?

Was it really a pleasure for him?

"Let's just say, it's not a pleasure for me," I replied, "I was with my baby, before they kidnapped me against my will and brought me here."

He chuckled, I couldn't help but see his yellowed and blackened teeth.

"I understand that you were in a nightclub."

"Not for pleasure, it was work," I replied.

He seemed entertained.

"Oh, now you work as a pole dancer at night?" he said sarcastically.

I looked at him with an ironic and forced smile.

"What does you want? Why does you have me here?"

He leaned back taking a deep breath.

"Celeste, I've been trying to find you in recent months," he explained, "we have an uncomfortable situation, with some of what has happened with people who have to do with you."

I frowned.

"With me?"

"Your parents." he explained.

I hadn't wanted to know anything about them since I disappeared, but even so the curiosity was greater than me.

"What happened to you?"

He placed a newspaper in front of me where there were two decapitated people looming on the front page.

"They were murdered." He blurted out.

I put a hand to my mouth, they what? I felt a lump in my throat, one thing was not having wanted to have a relationship these years, another was knowing that they had died.

"They found them in his house that way," he explained, "with the word nun on the wall made with his blood."

I swallowed the lump that was forming in my throat.

"Are you saying it's my fault?" I asked, frowning.

"No, I'm saying it's not the only murder."

He gave me another newspaper where it said that the mother superior had also died by being decapitated, following the same pattern. I shook my head, how horrible.

"We think it's the same person," he continued, "a series of murders, several parents, nuns and people from that church, we had nothing that involved you until the death of your parents."

"Why do you think my parents' death involves me?"

"Because it was the bloodiest and the first with people who did not attend the cathedral, plus they wrote “nun” on the wall."

I put a hand to my chest thinking about all this.

"So you think there's another murderer waaaay too many miles away from where I was?"

"He has mobilized," he said, "your parents were in Munich on a trip with one of your sisters, three hours away from you."

"I had no idea," I whispered in a low voice. "My son, is he in danger?"

"he is with our agents, now he is safe, but until we find her, we believe that you could be the next victim, so you are under our protection for the moment."

"She?" I frowned, "Who do you think she's looking for me?"

"We think she could be Georgette."

"Georgette?"

My mind came to my roommate, the one who was locked up for getting pregnant and then losing the baby.

I couldn't breathe.

"Her history shows that she was locked up for a long time, then she started serving in the church but many complained that she made people uncomfortable, the last we knew was that she had an attack where she hit someone and they locked her in a psychiatric center, but he was freed 3 years ago, exactly when the murders began."

"So I'm supposed to stay here until they find her?" I replied, "Away from my son?"

"It's the idea of protection or..."

She pursed her lips as if she couldn't continue her argument, was there another option?

"Or what?" I replied.

“Unless she's willing to do this,” she said as if she had an emergency plan and had waited all this time to show it to me.

She handed me a folder, when I opened it, my eyes widened and I knew what she was referring to.

A plan to find and kill her.
