Chapter 26: The Shadows of Escape
Ricardo's car hurtled down the night road at an adrenaline-fueled pace. The sound of the engine roared, breaking the silence of the night, while the roar of the strong wind infiltrated through the small cracks in the door. Sofia grips the seatbelt with both hands, her fingers almost turning white from the tight grip. The tension in the air was so thick it was almost like an invisible fog wrapped around them.
“They shouldn't have found us so soon,” Ricardo muttered, his voice low but heavy, more like he was talking to himself than to Sofia.
Sofia looked away from the window, where the shadows of trees and lampposts darted like running ghosts. She stares at Ricardo, who seems glued to the road before him.
His jaw hardens, the lines on his face sharpening in the dim light of the dashboard. But more than that, Sofia sees something else in his expression - an emotional turmoil he doesn't want to show. Disappointment, perhaps. Or smoldering anger veiled behind cold control.
“Maybe someone betrayed you,” Sofia said quietly, her voice almost drowned out by the engine's roar.
Ricardo glanced at her brief enough not to lose control of the speeding car. “That's a strong possibility,” he said flatly, but a faint anger was buried in it. “But right now, we don't have time to guess who. We have to survive first.”
Sofia swallowed, trying to calm herself despite her heart pounding hard. She turned her face back to the window, her eyes staring blankly at the seemingly endless dark street.
Without saying much more, Ricardo slammed the steering wheel to the left, taking the car off the main road and into a small lane almost hidden behind a row of tall trees.
The car's headlights highlighted the narrow path filled with leaves and low branches, creating shadows that moved like living things.
Tall trees towered on either side, their black trunks looking like mute sentinels watching their escape. The night breeze came through the vents, bringing the moist scent of soil and leaves trampled by the wheels.
The silence in the car was deafening. Sofia twirled the ring on her finger, an old habit she always did when nervous. She wanted to speak, to say something to break the tension, but her tongue felt numb. How could anyone feel so small and fragile in the middle of this escape?
Ricardo, on the other hand, remained focused. His eyes were sharp, watching every bend and fork of the road as if trying to remember every detail like a strategist. But Sofia knows that even a man as seemingly unflappable as doubts can haunt Ricardo.
“Where are we going?” Sofia finally asked after a few minutes of silence.
“There's another safe place outside the city,” Ricardo replied without much explanation. “But it's not an ideal place. We'll only be staying for a short while.”
Sofia bit her lip, feeling that there was something Ricardo wasn't saying. “What are you hiding from me, Ricardo?”
The man let out a long breath. “This place... is the old home of someone I trusted. But now, I'm not sure if I can still trust him.”
Sofia felt frustrated by Ricardo's half-hearted answer. “If you're not sure, why should we go there? Isn't it too risky?”
Ricardo looked at her with an expression that was difficult to interpret. “Sofia, in a situation like this, there is no completely safe option. All we can do is take the least risk.”
Sofia wasn't satisfied with that answer, but she knew Ricardo wouldn't change her mind. She leans against the window, trying to ease the tension within her.
“Ricardo,” she said softly. “What will we do if all this fails? If Giovanni actually wins?”
Ricardo was silent for a moment before answering. “I have no plans to fail, Sofia. It's the only way I can keep going.”
They arrived at a small, neglected-looking house in the forest a few hours later. The house looked empty, with cracked windows and peeling paint.
Ricardo went down first, checking the surroundings with his pistol in hand. After confirming that there was no immediate threat, he signaled Sofia to follow him.
“This looks... creepy,” Sofia commented upon entering the house.
“You'll have to get used to it,” Ricardo replied curtly. “In this world, places like this are the best protection.”
They walked through the dusty living room, heading towards a small room in the back. Ricardo opened a door hidden in the floor, revealing a staircase that led to the basement.
“We'll stay here for a while,” he said.
Sofia felt goosebumps as she stepped down but followed Ricardo without protest.
As they entered the basement, a man appeared from a dark corner holding a gun. Sofia was startled, but Ricardo didn't look surprised at all.
“Salvatore,” Ricardo said in a flat tone.
The man-Salvatore smiled slightly, but his eyes were suspicious. “Ricardo Moretti. I didn't expect you to come here after what happened last time.”
Sofia felt the atmosphere becoming increasingly tense. “Ricardo, who is he?”
“He's a former ally of mine,” Ricardo replied without looking at Salvatore. “And someone who might be able to help us.”
Salvatore chuckled. “Maybe? That sounds like you're still skeptical, Ricardo.”
“Because I do have doubts,” Ricardo replied sharply.
After a few tense moments, Ricardo and Salvatore sat at a small table in the center of the basement. Sofia stood by the wall, warily watching their every move.
“What do you want, Ricardo?” Salvatore finally asked.
“Information about Giovanni,” Ricardo replied firmly. “You know more about his weaknesses than anyone.”
Salvatore grinned. “You want me to betray Giovanni? After all he's done for me?”
Ricardo leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowed. “He betrayed you too, Salvatore. You know that.”
Salvatore fell silent, his face turning grim. Sofia sensed a deep and complicated history between these two men.
“What will you give me in exchange?” Salvatore finally asked.
Ricardo looked at him sharply. “Giovanni's life.”
Sofia couldn't hold back anymore. “Wait,” she said, her voice breaking the silence. “How do we know he won't sell us to Giovanni once we leave?”
Ricardo turned to her, but before he could answer, Salvatore spoke. “You are clever, young lady. You were right. I could have done it.”
Sofia shot Salvatore a stern look. “Why should we trust you, then?”
Salvatore smiled faintly. “Because I hate Giovanni more than anyone. And I want to see him destroyed.”
That night, plans began to take shape between them. But despite the words spoken, Sofia couldn't shake the feeling that they were in the middle of a bigger game than they could ever imagine.
And in the darkness, Giovanni might be planning his next move.
