Chapter 25: Shadows of the Past

Morning arrived slowly, bathing the lakeside cabin in a soft glow. Sofia woke up in an old chair, a thick blanket wrapped around her body. She doesn't remember when she finally fell asleep, but she clearly remembers Ricardo's gaze the night before—a promise hanging in the air.

Ricardo stood outside the cabin, looking out over the calm lake with an expression that was hard to guess. In the stillness of the morning, he looked like a man who had been fighting all his life-tired but not defeated.

"You're awake," he said without turning his head, his voice deep and heavy.

Sofia stepped outside, feeling the morning dew on her skin. "I couldn't sleep peacefully. There were too many thoughts," she replied honestly.

Ricardo stared at her for a moment before turning his gaze back to the lake. "The past always finds a way to catch up with us. No matter how far we run."

Ricardo rarely spoke about his life before becoming a Don, but that morning, he decided to pull back the curtain a little.

"I'm not the son of a powerful family like Giovanni," Ricardo began. "My father was just an ordinary man trying to make a better life for his family. But the underworld never lets anyone live in peace."

Sofia listened attentively, realizing that Ricardo was speaking in a more personal tone than before.

"They killed my father when I was a teenager," Ricardo continued. "I witnessed it all, couldn't do anything about it. I vowed never to be a victim again. That's how I started coming into this world-taking over, dominating, making sure that no one dared touch me or the people I cared about."

Sofia saw the human side of the man who had always seemed unflappable. "But you became like them," she said softly.

Ricardo looked at Sofia, his eyes dark but full of honesty. "I know. That's the price I have to pay to survive."

After a simple breakfast, Ricardo begins to formulate a plan. He knows that Giovanni will not stop until one of them is destroyed.

"I'm going to see someone," he told Sofia. "Someone who can help us balance this game."

"Who is he?" asked Sofia with a raised eyebrow.

"A former ally of Giovanni," replied Ricardo. "He left the organization a few years ago after Giovanni betrayed him. He has important information about Giovanni's weaknesses."

Sofia sensed that something was wrong with the plan. "What if he can't be trusted? What if it's a trap?"

Ricardo smiled slightly. "I don't have much choice, Sofia. If we don't take risks, we'll never win."

**A Tense Journey**

Ricardo and Sofia leave the cabin in a black car parked in the woods. They drive to the meeting place in tense silence. The roads are deserted, but Sofia can't shake the feeling that they are being watched.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Sofia finally asked.

"No," Ricardo answered honestly. "But I'm sure it's the only way."

When they arrived at the old warehouse on the outskirts of town, Sofia felt the tension in the air. Ricardo comes out first, checking the surroundings carefully.

An older man with a stern face and scars stepped out of the shadows. "Ricardo Moretti," he said in a hoarse voice. "It's been a long time."

The conversation began cautiously, but Sofia felt that something was wrong. The man, who introduced himself as Salvatore, seemed too friendly.

"We have a common enemy," Salvatore said, grinning. "I have everything you need to destroy Giovanni."

But before Ricardo could answer, the warehouse door burst open, and several armed men entered. Giovanni's face appeared from behind them, his smile triumphant.

"Ricardo," Giovanni said in a satisfied tone. "You really never learn, do you? I'm always one step ahead of you."

Ricardo immediately drew his gun, but Giovanni raised his hand, stopping his men. "Relax, I'm not here to kill you... yet. I want to make sure you know who's in control."

As Giovanni spoke, Sofia felt the adrenaline rush through her body. She knew they couldn't get out of this situation without taking a considerable risk.

With a quick movement, she grabbed an iron bar lying on the floor and hit one of Giovanni's men in the back of the head. Chaos instantly broke out, and Ricardo used that moment to attack.

Gunfire erupted inside the warehouse. Ricardo shields Sofia with his body, making sure she doesn't get hurt. Giovanni manages to escape amidst the chaos, but Ricardo and Sofia make it out alive.

In the car, Sofia takes a deep breath, her body still shaking. "We almost died in there," she says in a trembling voice.

Ricardo nodded, his eyes still sharp. "But we didn't die. And now, Giovanni knows that you're not just my weakness. You're also my strength."

The words echoed in Sofia's mind as they drove away, leaving the ruined warehouse behind. This war was not over, but something had changed. They were no longer just defending; they were ready to fight.

***

It was late afternoon when Ricardo and Sofia finally arrived at an old motel outside the city. The place was small and dingy but hidden enough to ensure temporary safety. Ricardo parked the car at the back of the motel, making sure no one followed them.

When they walked into the room, Sofia immediately sat on the edge of the bed with a gasp, her body still filled with tension after the incident at the warehouse. Ricardo closed the door and locked it three times, then stood still for a moment, watching her.

"Are you hurt?" he asked finally, his tone soft but firm.

Sofia shook her head, but the tears began to flow unstoppably. "I don't know how much longer I can go on like this," she said hoarsely.

Ricardo walked over, taking off his blood-stained jacket before sitting in the chair across from Sofia. His eyes were piercing, but there was something fragile behind the firmness.

"I know this is hard," he said slowly. "I never wanted you to be involved in any of this either. But I can't let them touch you."

Sofia lifted her gaze, her eyes smouldering. "But you know what, Ricardo? I'm not just afraid of them. I'm afraid of you, too. Of what you do, of the way you solve everything with violence."

The words were like a blow, but Ricardo didn't deny it. He bowed his head, taking a deep breath before speaking again. "I don't know any other way to protect you, Sofia. This world doesn't let us play by fair rules."

Sofia looked at him deeply. "Then teach me how to survive in this world. I don't want to be a burden to you."

Ricardo's face showed surprise, but he quickly hid it. "Teach you?" he repeated, his eyebrows raised.

"Yes," Sofia answered firmly. "I'm tired of feeling helpless. I want to be able to fight back."

Ricardo was silent for a few seconds, then nodded slowly. "If that's what you want, I'll help you. But, Sofia, this path will not make you happier. You have to be prepared to lose a part of yourself."

Sofia smiled bitterly. "That part is long gone, Ricardo."

That night, Ricardo begins training Sofia in the basics of survival. He shows her how to aim a weapon, read an opponent's movements, and, most importantly, stay calm under pressure.

"I never imagined I'd be doing this," Sofia says as she holds the gun for the first time. Her hands were shaking, but there was determination in her eyes.

"This exercise is not for attacking," Ricardo reminds her. "It's to make sure you can survive if something happens."

The training lasts until late at night. Every time Sofia makes a mistake, Ricardo patiently corrects it but also doesn't hesitate to give harsh criticism.

When they finally stopped, Sofia felt her body was tired, but her mind was more focused than ever.

After finishing, they sit outside the roof, overlooking the deserted street. The night air was cold, but neither of them was bothered.

"What are we going to do now?" Sofia asked, her voice calmer.

"We'll look for allies," Ricardo replied. "Giovanni has many enemies. We need to find people who are willing to help."

Sofia tilted her head, looking at Ricardo curiously. "Why are you so sure you can defeat him? What keeps you going?"

Ricardo let out a long breath, then answered in a low tone. "Because I have no other choice, Sofia. If I give up, he'll take everything, not just me but you too. And I won't let that happen."

Sofia stares at him for a while longer, realizing that underneath all the violence and cruelty, Ricardo is a wounded man, someone trying to protect what's left of his life.

However, the serenity of the night does not last long. As Sofia is about to re-enter the room, a suspicious noise is heard from afar. Ricardo immediately stood up, drawing his gun in a quick motion.

"Come inside, Sofia," he ordered sternly.

"What's going on?" Sofia asked, her voice trembling.

"There's someone out there," Ricardo replied curtly. "Stay here. Don't go out until I get back."

Sofia felt uneasy, but she obeyed Ricardo's orders. She peered out the window, watching Ricardo disappear into the shadows of the night.

Minutes passed, what felt like hours. Sofia felt her heart skip a beat, afraid of what might happen.

When the door to the room opened again, Ricardo entered with a serious face. "They've found us," he said shortly.

Sofia was stunned. "Who are they?"

"Giovanni's men," Ricardo replied. "We have to leave now."
