Chapter 13: Shadows of the Past
Sofia sat in the back seat of the fast-moving car, her hands still shaking after the incident at the old building. The sound of gunshots still echoed in her ears, even though it was hushed inside the car. Marco, who held the steering wheel with one hand while the other was wrapped around his injured arm, looked focused, although the sweat on his forehead showed the pain he was enduring.
“Marco, you need treatment,” Sofia said, trying to calm herself by speaking.
Marco just shook his head. “This is nothing. Our priority is to hide the document before they realize it's missing.”
Sofia holds the folder in her lap tightly. The document was evidence but also an increasingly complicated puzzle. How could Dario, the man who had been her protector, be connected to Ricardo?
“Where are we going now?” Sofia asked, her voice soft but firm.
“To a safer place,” Marco replied. “I have acquaintances outside the city who can help.”
Sofia closed her eyes, trying to catch her breath. However, every time she tried to calm down, Dario’s face appeared in her mind. His piercing eyes, his slight smile that was always full of mystery, and the way he protected her from every danger.
She remembered the first time she met Dario when he showed up at her apartment after she had accidentally photographed Ricardo. Dario seemed like a guardian angel back then, though the way he dominated conversations and his insistent presence left her feeling she had no choice but to go with the flow.
But now he’s starting to question everything. Did Dario care about him, or was he just part of a much darker master plan?
“He saved me, Marco,” she whispered, almost as if talking to herself.
Marco glanced at her through the rearview mirror, his eyebrows raised. “And he probably sold you out too, Sofia. We don't know what really happened yet.”
Sofia fell silent. Marco’s words hit her like a cold slap.
When they finally arrived at the location Marco was referring to, a small house in the countryside surrounded by dense forest, Sofia felt a little relieved. It was far from the hustle and bustle of the city, far from any immediate threat, or at least that’s what she thought.
Inside the house, an older woman with white hair greeted them. She knew Marco well, called him by his little name, and immediately began treating the wound on his arm.
“It will heal,” the woman said as she bandaged Marco’s wound. “But you need to rest.”
Marco nodded, though it was clear he had no intention of actually resting. He turned towards Sofia, who carefully examined documents on the kitchen table.
“Did you find anything useful?” Marco asked.
Sofia shook her head, frustrated. “Just the report on the party and the names mentioned. Ricardo, Dario, and some other people I don't recognize.”
Marco leaned closer, looking at the document. “These are the names of people in the Navarro family. Some of them are Dario's allies.”
“If they were his allies, why didn't he tell me?” Sofia looked at Marco with eyes filled with confusion and anger.
Marco sighed. “Because the world is not simple, Sofia. Sometimes, you have to play with the enemy to defeat them.”
That night, Sofia couldn’t sleep. She sat by the window, looking at the stars scattered across the night sky. In her hand, she held a small photograph she found among the documents—a picture of Dario with a man who appeared to be Ricardo.
“Who exactly are you, Dario?” she whispered.
As she pondered, a sound from outside caught her attention. He rushed to the window and saw someone moving in the shadows. Quickly, he ran to Marco, sitting in the living room cleaning his gun.
“There's someone outside,” she said in a low but firm voice.
Marco was instantly alert. He picked up his gun and signaled Sofia to stay put. “Don't move until I get back.”
However, Sofia couldn’t just sit still. Carefully, she followed Marco out, keeping a few steps behind him.
Outside, the forest was tranquil, with only the wind blowing through the trees. Marco moved slowly, his eyes sweeping every corner, until he finally spotted a figure hiding behind a tree.
“Who's there?!” shouted Marco, aiming his gun.
The figure stepped out of the shadows, and Sofia held her breath at the sight of a familiar face.
“Dario?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Dario stood in the doorway, his silhouette erect against the dim light of the flickering lamps in the room. His face radiated an unconcealable weariness, with the fine lines around his eyes speaking more than the words from his mouth. However, despite the weariness of her body, there was a burning resoluteness in her gaze- the gaze of someone who carried the weight of the world on her shoulders but still persevered.
“We need to talk,” she said in a heavy, hoarse voice, like someone who had passed a sleepless night and was carrying a secret too heavy to share.
On the other side of the room, Marco stood at attention, his gun aimed steadily at Dario’s chest. A tense atmosphere enveloped the room like air too thick to breathe. Nothing moved; even the shadows on the walls seemed frozen. Marco’s eyes narrowed, full of an almost paranoid wariness. “How do we know you’re not part of this trap?” he asked sharply, his voice like a knife slicing through the air.
Dario exhaled slowly as if every word he was about to say had to be chosen carefully. He raised his hands in slow motion, showing his empty palms, a symbol of peace that was barely enough to calm the tension in the room. “You have no reason to trust me,
Marco,” she said in a low tone, but there was an unwavering determination in her voice. “But I came here to set things straight. I won’t let Sofia be in danger.”
The room feels like a battlefield without bullets- only the sound of heavy breathing, unspoken fear, and distrust radiating between them. Marco’s finger remained curled around the trigger, and for a moment that felt like an eternity, everyone waited for the next move. Outside, the sound of the harsh night wind seemed to illustrate the anxiety that surrounded them.
Dario remained standing where he was, his face unchanged even as cold sweat began to run down his temples. He knew that one wrong move could turn this night into a tragedy. But beneath the tension, there was something else in his gaze-something deeper than fear, sharper than guilt. Love made him stand unarmed, ready to accept any risk to protect Sofia.
Sofia steps forward, even though Marco tries to stop her. “What are you doing here, Dario? Do you know what we found?”
Dario looked at her with a look that was hard to interpret. “I know what you’re thinking, Sofia. But whatever was in that document, you only saw part of the story. Ricardo wanted me to look like a traitor, but it was part of his plan to destroy my family.”
Sofia felt confusion and anger flood through her. “So you want me to just believe you? After all this?”
Marco finally spoke again, this time in a slightly lower voice but still stubborn. “Prove it. Prove you’re here for Sofia, not to set us up.” However, even though the words were firm, there was doubt visible in his eyes, like someone who wanted to believe but had been betrayed too many times just to let it happen.
As the silence returned to the room, the atmosphere solidified, as if time had stopped and the whole world was just waiting to see what would happen in that place.
Dario bowed his head for a moment, then looked at Sofia with an intensity that made her tremble. “I'm not asking you to believe my words, Sofia. I will prove it with my actions.”
