Chapter 12: Traces in the Shadows

Sofia sat in a small room in a safe house provided by Marco, her mind whirling like a storm that wouldn’t let up. She hadn’t slept all night, reliving every conversation, every moment she had spent with Dario. Everything now felt like an incomplete puzzle-there were pieces missing, parts out of sync.

“How could I be so stupid?” he muttered under his breath, staring at the trembling hands in his lap.

Marco, who was in the corner of the room, raised his head. “It's not your fault, Sofia.”

Sofia looked at him sharply. “How do I know it's not my fault? I trusted him. I... I'm starting to think that he-” Sofia stopped, holding back her tears. “All of this happened because of me. If I hadn't taken pictures that night, I wouldn't be stuck in this situation. Ricardo wouldn't have targeted me. Dario wouldn't...”

“You don't know what really happened,” Marco cut in, his voice firm. “Dario is not someone who is easily manipulated. If he's in this situation, it's not because he betrayed you. I believe he has his own reasons.”

Although Marco tried to calm Sofia down, her heart couldn’t stay calm. There were too many unanswered questions. Who betrayed them? Why was Dario so sure of his plan that he fell into the trap? And most importantly, was Dario still alive?

Sofia knew she couldn’t just sit back and wait for the answers. She had to find out for herself. But who can she trust? Marco seemed sincere, but he was Dario’s confidant. Had Dario been part of this devious plan, could Marco not have been part of it?

He decided to test Marco. “If you are so sure that Dario is innocent,” he said slowly, ”then help me find him.”

Marco was silent, clearly surprised by the request. “Sofia, this is too dangerous.”

“I've already crossed the line of safety since I was trapped in this world,” Sofia replied firmly. “If you really want to protect me, you'll help me find answers.”

After much discussion, Marco finally agreed to help, albeit with many reservations. He gives Sofia some basic information about the Navarro family’s inner circle, including the places they use as temporary headquarters.

That night, they left hurriedly, as if every second was a matter of life and death. Sofia doesn’t dare look back, afraid of what she might see or who might be watching.

The dark clothes she wore felt more like a forced disguise than protection. Each knot of hair she neatly tied behind her head seemed to hold all the unspoken tension. The night breeze touched her face, but Sofia only felt the cold coming from within herself. She felt like a spy in an action movie, but the reality was much scarier.

The car they were traveling in drove silently through the dark streets, illuminated only by the dim light of the street lamps. Sofia’s heart beat loudly in her chest, in sync with the tires squealing softly on the asphalt.

Silently, her mind drifts to unanswered questions, to faces she once trusted, and to the terrifying possibilities that await at the end of this journey. “What on earth am I doing?” she thought, knowing it was too late to turn back.

When they finally arrived at the old building, Sofia observed its cracked walls and peeling paint. The smell of dampness and dust greeted them as the heavy door opened, like a secret hidden for too long.

On the outside, this place may seem like nothing more than a building on the verge of collapse, but inside, another world ambushes Sofia without warning. Dim white fluorescent lights illuminate a large room with walls lined with large whiteboards. Each board was filled with notes, diagrams, and photographs posted carefully but with an urgency evident in the torn tape and slightly messy writing.

Sofia tried to make sense of what she was seeing, but her eyes were immediately drawn to one thing—a photograph posted in the center of the giant board. The image made her body freeze in place. It was a picture of herself. She was standing in a park she knew well, smiling like someone who didn’t realize she was being watched.

Her breath caught in her throat. She took a hesitant step forward, her gaze fixed on her image, but she felt her back chill like ice. “This can’t be,” she muttered, barely audible. Her heart was beating so hard that she felt like everyone else in the room must be able to hear it. The photo looked ordinary, but its presence was a silent, unspoken threat, a mystery she had never expected to face that night.

Tension gripped Sofia, making every second feel like an eternity. She wanted to ask questions and demand an explanation, but her tongue was tongue-tied. Underneath the fear was growing anger - at whoever had put the photo there and at herself, who seemed more deeply entangled than she had ever imagined.

“He's really watching you,” Marco said quietly, looking at the photo.

“Ricardo?” whispered Sofia, her voice barely audible.

Marco nodded, his expression tense. “But this is more than surveillance. It's... a plan.”

They continued searching the room, and Sofia found a folder containing all the documents. One of the documents was a report on the party where she photographed Ricardo. Sofia read the report carefully, and her heart was heavy when she saw a name at the end of the report: Dario Moretti.

Sofia held the document tightly, her eyes searching for something to explain everything. “Marco,” she said in a shaky voice. “Why is Dario’s name here? What does this mean?”

Marco leaned closer and read the document. His face immediately hardened. “I don't know,” he said, his voice low but serious. “But this doesn't make sense. Dario couldn't possibly be working with Ricardo. It's a betrayal of his own family.”

“And against me,” Sofia added bitterly.

However, footsteps came from outside before they could think of their next move. Marco instantly grabbed his gun, signaling Sofia to hide.

The front door opened, and several armed men entered. They speak in Spanish and are looking for something or someone. Sofia holds her breath behind the closet, hoping her loud heartbeat is not heard.

Marco fired the first shot, starting a fast and intense gunfight. Sofia tries to refrain from screaming when the bullets hit a nearby wall. However, when one of the men found her hiding spot, she knew she couldn’t remain passive.

Quickly, Sofia grabbed the wooden stick she found earlier and hit the man with all her might. The man fell, and Sofia felt a mixture of fear and courage she had never felt before.

Marco managed to immobilize the rest, but not unscathed. “We should go now,” he said, holding his bleeding arm.

Sofia nodded, though her heart was still filled with fear. They exited the building quickly, leaving the chaos behind them.
