Chapter 14: Trust at the Knife’s Edge

The dark forest surrounding the house absorbs sound. There was only the sigh of the wind rustling the leaves and Sofia’s heartbeat echoing in his ears. Dario stood a few steps before her, his face illuminated by the moonlight reflecting the tension in his jaw. He looks thinner and tired, but his aura remains unrivaled and complete with authority, making Sofia want to trust him.

However, the pain in her heart was more significant than the temptation to trust.

“I have no reason to trust you,” Sofia said finally, her voice trembling despite trying to look strong.

Dario nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Sofia. “And I won't just ask you to. But I'm here to protect you, Sofia. That's the only reason I came back.”

Before Sofia could respond, Marco stepped forward, cutting the tension between them. His gun was still pointed at Dario. “Then why did you come empty-handed, Moretti? If you're really here to help, show us something concrete, not empty promises.”

Dario let out a long breath, raising his hands to shoulder height. “Because I know that if I came armed, you'd shoot me without even asking.”

Marco laughed sarcastically, though his eyes remained wary. “I might still do it.”

Sofia swallowed, feeling like a tense rope ready to break between these two men. “Marco, put your gun down,” she said, trying to take control of the situation.

Marco shook his head. “You don't know what he's hiding, Sofia. If we let our guard down now, we could be dead by morning.”

Dario stepped closer, his movements slow but sure, as if challenging Marco to make a decision. “I know you found the document. Ricardo designed it to instill doubt in your minds. He wants to destroy what we have-my family, my allies, including you, Sofia.”

Sofia was surprised to hear those words. “What do you mean 'including me'? Was I just part of your plan all along?”

Dario stopped, looking at her with a guilt-ridden expression. “No, Sofia. You were the only one who was never part of this game. I approached you because I had to protect you, but things changed. You know that.”

Sofia’s eyes heated up, but she refused to cry. “How do I know this isn’t another lie?”

Dario approached this time removing all distance. Marco’s voice behind him sounded like a distant murmur as Sofia’s attention was locked on the man before her. Dario took her hand, holding it gently but firmly.

“I swear,” he said softly, his tone full of intensity. “I'll prove it, Sofia. You don't have to believe me now, but give me a chance.”

After a moment that felt like an eternity, Sofia gave a slight nod, though her heart was still in turmoil. Marco grunted disapprovingly but lowered his weapon, though still gripping it tightly.

“You have a short time to prove your intentions, Moretti,” Marco said coldly. “If you hurt him, I'll pull the trigger.”

Dario smiled slightly, more in appreciation than mockery. “I won't let that happen.”

They returned to the house with cautious steps as if the shadows of the forest were peering at their every move. Once inside, Dario immediately took charge of the situation.

“There's an insider in the Navarro family circle,” he said, leaning against the wall. “He's the cause of all this chaos, but I don't know who yet. That's why I was forced to play on Ricardo's side to get information. But now I know one thing-Ricardo won't stop until Sofia is removed.”

Marco folded his arms, clearly skeptical. “And what's your plan to stop that?”

Sofia felt as if she couldn’t hide from the man. Dario’s eyes, dark and determined, seemed to pierce the protective layer she had built for herself. “I need you, Sofia,” he said softly, but every word felt like an irresistible command. “Only you can help me get Ricardo out of hiding.”

The words were like a bolt of lightning. Sofia felt her body stiffen, and her heart rate jumped. “Me?” she said, almost in disbelief. “How could I do that? I didn’t even know what was going on.” Her voice trembled between confusion and anger, but she knew Dario wasn’t speaking without reason.

Dario sighed. His face hardened, but his voice remained soft like he was trying to calm the storm in Sofia’sheart. “Ricardo wasn’t just after you because of your picture,” he said, his tone almost a whisper but full of firmness. “He knows you are my weak point. If I take you with me, he’ll think I’m giving in-that I'm submitting to him. And that's when we strike.”

Sofia felt a chill come over her as the air in the room suddenly turned to ice. Dario’s words echoed in her mind but provided no clarity-only more questions and fear. “So, you want me as bait?” she asked, her tone rising, anxiety mixed with disbelief.

“Not just bait,” Dario corrected, his voice a little more robust, full of a conviction that was hard to deny. He stepped closer until Sofia could feel his presence so real, so dominating. “I’ll make sure you’re safe every step of the way. I swear it. But you are the key to destroying his plans.”

Marco reacted immediately. “You're crazy if you think I'm going to let her in on your stupid plan.”

“I know it's crazy,” Dario retorted, his tone sharp. “But if you have a better idea, I'm all ears.”

Sofia turned her face away, trying to avoid Dario’s intense gaze, but there was no escape from this tension. Her mind was racing with possibilities. She felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff, forced to jump without knowing if anything would catch her. “This is crazy, Dario,” she said, her voice almost breaking. “I don’t even know if I can trust you.”

The tension between them hung like a rope ready to break. Usually calm and in control, Dario seemed to struggle not to lose focus. “You can trust me, Sofia. I know this is a lot for you to accept, but I have no other choice. And if we fail... Ricardo won’t stop. Not just me or you, but everyone we care about will be in danger.”

There was silence for a moment. Only the sound of their breathing could be heard in the room, heavy and full of a weight that was hard to pronounce. Sofia knows that she has been dragged into something much bigger than herself, and despite all her instincts to rebel, something in the way Dario speaks—something in his gaze—makes her hesitate to say no.

“Fine,” he said finally, though his inner voice begged him to stop. “I'll do it.”

Dario nodded, the expression on his face showing a mixture of relief and guilt. Marco, though disapproving, stood by his side.

“We start tomorrow,” Dario said. “And there's no room for error.”
