Chapter 175
Alexander had actually given it serious thought before answering that he wanted a daughter.
But now, noticing that Lila's words were completely dismissive, his expression visibly darkened. He ground out her name through clenched teeth, "Lila!"
She looked at him with a smile, pretending not to understand, "Are you upset?"
He didn't say anything, but his eyes made it obvious.
Lila reminded him, "We already agreed when we'd have kids, yet you were testing me. When you asked, I couldn't just stay silent, right? So I made a joke, and I thought you'd find it funny."
"Do you find it funny yourself?"
"Not bad."
Alexander said with heavy emphasis on each word, "Not at all!"
She put on an innocent smile and tried to smooth things over, "Okay, okay, if you don't think it's funny, then don't laugh. Don't be angry. It's not good for your health."
Alexander looked at her with a terrible expression, his clear blue eyes revealing a cold, sinister glint.
In his chest, there was disappointment, anger at being played, and fury at how she'd raised his hopes only to dash them. Yet hearing her soft tone, he couldn't bring himself to lose his temper.
For the first time, Alexander realized he shouldn't underestimate this Mrs. Sinclair that his grandmother had forced on him.
She always managed to stir his emotions with just a few words.
He had to admit, she had some peculiar talent.
Lila watched his dark expression and carefully tugged at his sleeve, testing the waters, "Honey, shall we go home?"
He shook his arm, as if to say "don't touch me," then snorted coldly and started walking ahead of her.
Lila pressed her lips together to hold back a laugh, though she was a bit worried. She dropped the smile and hurried after him with quick little steps.
When they reached the car, they each got in.
Alexander started the engine and quickly drove off.
On the road, Lila sat in the passenger seat, unable to help lifting her left hand and staring at the ring on her ring finger again and again.
The ring's design was beautiful. She had to admit Alexander had excellent taste. As for the diamond's size? To a rich person like Alexander, it was probably perfectly suitable for daily wear, but Lila thought the diamond was huge.
If Elara saw it, she would definitely misunderstand and think Alexander was interested in her, which is why he'd bought her such a large and beautiful diamond ring.
But actually, it was all Grandmother's requirement.
Plus, he had money to spare and just bought it casually to send Grandmother a signal that he knew proper etiquette.
Everything was passive, not voluntary, and had nothing to do with genuine feelings.
Before today, Lila had fantasized about how surprised and happy she would be when the man she liked gave her a diamond ring.
But reality was that the diamond ring she received was just an accessory to complete someone's image, without any emotion attached.
Still, pretty rings and sparkling diamonds. All women like them. So having received it, she was somewhat happy, though she couldn't experience that inner joy and excitement that ordinary girlfriends or wives feel when receiving a diamond ring. That was rather regrettable.
While driving, Alexander caught a glimpse of Lila staring at the diamond ring. A mocking curve formed at the corner of his mouth, "Do you like this ring that much, Mrs. Sinclair?"
Without looking at his expression, she simply acknowledged and responded, "Yes, things like jewelry and diamonds, all women like them. I like them too."
Alexander snorted coldly, "Wrong. You should say, women like you who are vain and money-obsessed all like them."
