Chapter 123
Ethan sighed, sounding helpless. "My mom's been pushing me to find someone ever since I graduated. I want you to pretend to be my girlfriend for a bit, just to deal with her."
"What? That doesn't seem right."
"Just meet her once. After she knows I have a girlfriend, she'll stop pressuring me to find someone, and I can handle the rest myself."
Rationally, Lila thought this whole thing was unreliable.
But emotionally, she remembered how Ethan had kindly spent time teaching her to drive last time, only to have Alexander make snide remarks about his car being dirty, and he didn't even get to eat lunch in the end. She actually felt a bit bad about it.
So if she could help him out, it would be a way to thank Ethan for his previous effort and sacrifice.
So she asked, "When would we meet?"
"Tomorrow evening?"
"Evening?"
Ethan said, "Just dinner time, an hour would be enough. Whatever time works for you, we'll set it then. I can work around my parents' schedule."
To avoid Alexander picking up on anything suspicious, Lila didn't say Ethan's name during the conversation, and she kept things vague without mentioning specific times or key details, "Okay, let's talk about it later. But I'm worried I might have something come up and can't make it. How about I ask Elara if she's free? If she is, maybe she could help you out first?"
Ethan said, "Elara just started her job, and I heard her boss is really difficult. I don't want to cause trouble for her."
"Alright then, I'll try my best to make time."
"Thanks, Lila."
She smiled, "No problem. After all, you've helped me too. Let's leave it at that then, bye."
"Yeah, bye."
After hanging up, Lila turned around and saw Alexander standing behind her—she had no idea when he'd gotten there.
As their eyes met in the air, he questioned her matter-of-factly, "Who was that on the phone?"
She replied quietly, "That's my private business, isn't it?"
Alexander's tone lifted slightly, as if amused, "Private business?"
Hearing his tone, Lila couldn't imagine what excuse he'd use next to twist her perspective, and even her nodding became hesitant, "Yeah, everyone has privacy. Could you show a little respect?"
Alexander looked at her sideways, his thin lips holding an unclear smile, "Fine, I'll respect your privacy, but please have my driver respect her profession too, and definitely don't handle private matters during work hours."
Dropping that line, Alexander headed upstairs.
Lila was completely confused.
From what he said, had he overheard her conversation with Ethan just now?
That didn't make sense.
The next day.
Lila was still cooking breakfast in the morning when she heard movement at the entrance.
When she turned to look over, she caught a glimpse of Alexander returning from his morning run. As soon as he came in, he seemed to glance toward the kitchen, as if checking whether she was home.
What was that about?
Lila didn't get it and focused on cooking. After finishing, she brought the plates to the dining room.
Alexander washed his hands and sat down elegantly at the table.
While eating, Alexander, who was usually reserved and quiet, unusually started chatting with her, "What are your plans later?"
"I don't have any plans."
After saying that, Lila suddenly remembered what he'd said to her yesterday, so she smiled, "I'm the driver, you're the boss. What company has a rule where the driver makes plans for the boss?"
Alexander's face darkened, and he glared at her fiercely.
