Chapter 48
Lila certainly knew those words weren't believable, but John meant well.
She drove slowly and glanced sideways at Alexander. "He was just trying to comfort me. I couldn't ruin the mood, could I?"
"Is that so?"
After dropping these two words with unclear meaning, Alexander continued, "Then tell me, what did you mean by 'he was teaching you very seriously before I arrived'?"
Lila was speechless.
So even stating facts gets held against you?
Well, she'd learned something new.
Lila thought for a moment before saying, "What I meant was that Mr. Lucas is probably closer to you, so when you showed up, he started joking around. In front of me, someone he's not familiar with, he was still very proper."
Or maybe John actually liked Alexander, which was why he showed his carefree side in front of him to get his attention?
Of course, she didn't share this guess with Alexander.
Who really knows why?
Alexander scoffed coldly, "You're quite good at making excuses for him."
Lila pressed her lips together in silence.
What excuses?
John hadn't done anything wrong in the first place, had he?
She was still thinking about today's events when Alexander's voice suddenly cut to the point, "Starting today, I'll teach you to drive. Five days. If you can't drive steadily after five days, no matter what Grandma says, I'll kick you out of the Sinclair Group."
Lila felt helpless.
"I understand." She answered flatly, but thought to herself that even if it was just to prevent Grandma from getting upset about her being fired, she had to learn to drive well in these five days.
She silently cheered herself on: Lila, you can do this! You definitely can.
Her phone rang.
With her hands on the steering wheel, she had no time to check the message, and didn't dare stop the car right in front of Alexander just to look at her phone. So she decided to check it later when they returned to the company and Alexander was driving with her in the passenger seat.
Alexander watched her slow, leisurely driving and spoke unhurriedly, "When driving straight normally, just look ahead. When turning or changing lanes, use your turn signal and check the rearview mirror for vehicles behind you."
"Okay, I got it."
"Signal before turning, not when you reach the intersection, and don't change lanes continuously."
Lila said, "okay."
For some reason, when Alexander told her these things, she inexplicably remembered her first day as a driver when she crashed his car, and how he drove her to the company in the car Charlie brought over, changing lanes continuously without using turn signals.
Lila glanced at Alexander. "Do you usually use turn signals?"
"Of course."
"Even when changing lanes?"
Alexander frowned, his eyes showing displeasure as he stared at her. "What are you trying to say?"
"Nothing, just asking."
"Mind your own business."
Lila nodded. "Got it."
Lila stopped thinking about how he operated and just drove forward following Alexander's instructions, signaling when turning, and when practicing lane changes, she'd change one lane, drive for a bit, then change to a second lane.
After practicing for a while, Lila felt it wasn't that difficult after all.
Near noon, Alexander gave the order. "Head back to the company now."
"Oh, okay." After responding, she stopped the car and started unbuckling her seatbelt.
Alexander frowned. "What are you doing?"
Lila said, "Getting out so you can drive. Is there a problem?"
"You drive." His tone left no room for discussion.
She paused. "What?"
"What? After practicing all morning, you can't drive back to the company from here?"
"I'm a bit scared."
Alexander leaned back in the passenger seat, his gaze looking out through the windshield, his tone commanding, "Just practicing without real experience, you'll never improve."
At this point, he glanced at his watch. "There's still time. Even if you drive slowly, we can still make it back for lunch at the employee cafeteria."
The voice of retreat beat loudly in Lila's heart, but she didn't dare refuse Alexander.
For a moment, she was caught in a dilemma.
