Chapter 140
When Lila finished speaking, Alexander stared at her calm eyes, as if trying to figure out what she meant by asking that question.
After a few seconds of silence, he suddenly smiled. "You care about me and Julie?"
Without thinking, Lila blurted out, "Why would I care about her?"
Alexander nodded seriously, but his eyes became even more unreadable as he pressed on, "So, you're concerned about me?"
Lila didn't know how to answer Alexander's question.
What he said wasn't exactly wrong, but why did her concern feel so unnecessary?
Or rather, it wasn't really concern. It was more like she minded, minded that her husband was having dinner alone with another woman.
Even though they had no feelings for each other, they were still bound by a marriage agreement.
She couldn't just not care about his interactions with other women.
Alexander took in every bit of her hesitation, his lips curving slightly. "Or... are you jealous of Julie?"
Jealous?
Lila's heart skipped a beat, and she snapped back to reality.
She looked up at him, avoiding a direct answer about whether she was jealous. "You got angry at me for pretending to be someone's girlfriend, and I don't like you having dinner alone with other women either. You even drove her home and let her sit in the passenger seat. Haven't you heard that a married man's passenger seat shouldn't be for just any woman?"
"So a married woman can sit in a single man's passenger seat?"
Lila was stumped.
He always knew exactly how to strike back.
Lila lowered her eyes, looking dejected. "Fine, if you don't want to tell me what you were doing with Miss Baker, forget it. I can't control you anyway. It's always been you bullying me and controlling me, never the other way around."
Alexander watched her bite her lip with downcast eyes, looking like the most wronged person in the world, and couldn't help but scoff.
But somehow, he didn't want to see her looking so miserable.
Alexander reached out to lift her chin, his already close handsome face moving even closer, their foreheads nearly touching.
Lila looked at his sudden movement, nervous and confused. "What are you doing? You just said..."
Alexander cut her off. "Kiss me once, and I'll tell you."
"What?" She froze.
Unusually patient, he repeated himself persuasively. "Crybaby, kiss me once, and I'll tell you why I met with Julie. Deal?"
Lila looked into his eyes, feeling as if there was some magnetic force pulling her in, making it impossible to look away. Still, she maintained a thread of rationality and questioned him, "Who's a crybaby? Don't call me that."
"Aren't you? I ask you a few questions and you're ready to cry. If that's not a crybaby, what is?"
"It's because you're too scary."
He disagreed. "Am I?"
She answered without hesitation. "Yes, I've never met anyone as scary as you. When you get angry, it's like you want to kill someone."
Alexander chuckled softly, but this time without the mockery and displeasure.
He asked her, "Would I get angry if you didn't provoke me?"
"You don't even like me, so why get that angry? It's like I betrayed you or something."
"You are Mrs. Sinclair. As your husband, imagine how I felt hearing someone introduce Mrs. Sinclair as his son's girlfriend, especially when he really liked you as a daughter-in-law and was discussing what kind of wedding to throw for you in the future. Put yourself in my shoes. How would you feel?"
She naturally knew she was in the wrong about this.
But she had already apologized to him over and over, and he still wouldn't let it go.
"Kiss me once?" Alexander looked at her dazed expression and spoke again, his voice carrying a hint of guidance, of temptation.
