Chapter 141
Lila didn't understand what was going through Alexander's mind with this sudden strange request.
Just a few minutes ago, he looked like he was ready to kill someone, and now he was asking her to kiss him?
How could his mood change so quickly?
She pressed her lips together slightly and asked back, "Why should I kiss you?"
Alexander looked at her eyes, still a bit red from crying, lifted his hand that had been resting on the sofa to pat her head, and spoke slowly, "First, this is a necessary step in building our relationship. Second, one kiss in exchange for me answering your questions - that's a pretty good deal, isn't it?"
It was a good deal, but she was supposed to kiss him when she hadn't even gotten over being scared by him? Why did that feel so weird?
Alexander stared at her silent expression, "What, you don't want to?"
Before she could answer, he guessed again, "Or are you still mad at me? Blaming me for scaring you to tears?"
Lila's thoughts were hit right on the mark.
His brain worked pretty well, apparently.
Her almond-shaped eyes looked at him with a hint of resentment. She suddenly leaned in, planted a quick peck on his left cheek, then pulled back, "There, I kissed you. Can you tell me now what you were meeting Miss Baker for?"
Alexander smiled slightly, "Even though you were totally going through the motions, I'll answer you since you cried."
Lila pouted.
Soon, she heard him say, "Julie was the one who asked me to dinner, saying she wanted to thank me for helping her out of a tight spot. We also chatted a bit about things related to Celeste."
Celeste?
So it really was about her.
Lila looked at him and pressed, "Is there news about Miss Phillips?"
"Not yet."
"If she comes back, do we still have to maintain our marriage for the full year according to the agreement? Or will you divorce me as soon as she returns?"
Alexander looked at her with an unreadable expression, "Since we've already signed the agreement, it's not something I can break just because I want to."
Lila acknowledged, "I see."
Alexander reached up to ruffle her hair, "Alright, get some rest early. Don't you have to go see your grandmother tomorrow?"
Lila felt that gestures like ruffling her hair were too intimate and didn't fit their relationship at all.
But he'd already done it, so saying anything now was pointless.
She nodded, "Good night."
Alexander turned and left her room.
Lila watched his retreating figure, and for some reason, many melancholy thoughts arose in her heart.
If he wouldn't divorce her right away even when Celeste came back, when should she hope for Celeste to return?
Probably best if it was after the divorce.
If Celeste came back while she and Alexander were still married, wouldn't Alexander spend every day with Celeste and never be home?
In that case, Grandmother would definitely be unhappy again, and she, as Mrs. Sinclair, would find it really annoying too.
Unable to change the situation, just having to watch and experience the feeling of being cheated on - just thinking about it was irritating.
After Alexander left, Lila got up and went to the bathroom. Looking at her red eyes in the mirror, she let out a long breath. He had really scared her to death just now.
For a moment there, she thought she was about to become the female lead in one of those countless domestic violence news stories.
Thank goodness, she wasn't.
She really didn't know what she would do if she actually got hit.
The next day.
While Lila was still immersed in sweet dreams, she seemed to hear someone opening her bedroom door, but she was so sleepy that she took it as a sound from her dream and didn't pay attention, just rolled over and continued sleeping.
Until she felt someone picking her up.
