Chapter 138
The next second, Alexander's hand that had thrown the cup suddenly grabbed Lila's chin, his bloodshot eyes staring at her fiercely, "Nothing happened? What else did you want to do with him?"
She shook her head, tears already filling her eyes, "No, I was just trying to explain."
"You want to cry? You think you're wronged? How dare you feel wronged?"
"I don't, I don't want to cry, and I'm not wronged, really."
Lila denied it again and again.
She had never seen Alexander this angry before.
Though scared, she still let go of the railing with one hand.
She carefully tried to move closer to Alexander. When her fingertips touched his arm, she grabbed it tightly with trembling hands. Her reddened eyes stared into his as she spoke in the most gentle and careful tone, "Honey, please don't be so angry. I'm really scared. I won't do this again. I won't contact Ethan anymore, and I won't pretend to be his girlfriend anymore, okay?"
Alexander looked at her trembling figure, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. An inexplicable strange feeling arose in his chest.
But the anger in his eyes hadn't faded.
Alexander released his grip on her chin. Just as he was about to touch her face, Lila suddenly slid down along the railing, hugging her knees and shaking her head, "Don't hit me, please don't hit me..."
As she spoke, she started crying in fear.
No one had ever bullied her like this in her entire life.
She had lived with her grandmother in a small town, surrounded by kind-hearted people with good temperaments, where neighbors helped each other.
She had never met anyone as terrifying as Alexander—so terrifying that she felt like the most pitiful and helpless person in the world.
She was afraid of being hit, afraid of pain, afraid of anything violent.
Lila sobbed, heartbroken, mumbling, "I didn't do anything with anyone else. I was just helping. I didn't even hold hands with Ethan. I didn't do anything to betray you. Don't hit me."
"Why blame me? Why bully me? You can be so patient and gentle with Miss Baker, who means nothing to you, but you're so mean to me, your legal wife. I've never done anything to offend you!"
"I don't want to be married to you anymore. I don't want to live under the same roof with you anymore. I want a divorce. You're really too scary."
Alexander stood there, looking down at her. Seeing the woman's helpless and frightened appearance, his chest felt like something was gripping it, making it hard to breathe.
Somehow, his anger quietly subsided considerably.
He crouched down and reached out to pull her up, but Lila shrank back in fear, her timid eyes staring at him, brimming with tears, like a poor stray dog.
Alexander frowned at her and asked with displeasure, "Is it really necessary to be this scared?"
She bit her lip, her eyes getting redder.
Tears splashed onto the marble floor.
More tears fell.
He frowned, his hand suspended in mid-air curling slightly as he stared at her and asked, "When did I say I was going to hit you?"
Lila looked at him with wet eyes, her face red as she said aggrievedly, "Weren't you about to hit me just now?"
Alexander scoffed coldly.
He felt like all his anger had somehow disappeared in this moment.
Alexander reached up to touch her face. Lila shrank back again, but he still dominantly pressed his large palm against her face, then gently wiped away her tears with his calloused fingertips, "Didn't I say I don't hit women?"
Lila pressed her lips together and spoke with a sobbing voice, "But you might go back on your word."
For a moment, Alexander didn't know what to say to Lila.
