Chapter 137
Alexander's inscrutable gaze fell on her like a judgment.
Lila looked away.
It was getting late. They'd already eaten dinner out, and this was usually the time she'd spend alone in her bedroom. Now she tried hard to ignore Alexander's stare as she headed upstairs.
Step by step up the stairs, she got closer and closer to Alexander.
Lila felt somewhat afraid.
So when she reached the last step, her pace quickened noticeably. She wanted to get into her room quickly—that way Alexander wouldn't bother her.
But what was coming couldn't be avoided.
Alexander, who hadn't spoken to her since their unpleasant encounter in the study that morning, spoke for the first time today.
"Stop!"
Two simple words, but they made goosebumps rise all over Lila's body.
Because his voice was so cold—you didn't need to think twice to imagine what kind of towering rage lay beneath that icy tone.
Lila's legs felt like lead, rooted to the spot.
She didn't turn around, but she could hear him walking toward her, step by step.
Alexander stopped in front of her, looking down at her from above. His slightly raised tone carried a casual but extremely dangerous edge, "Ethan's girlfriend?"
Though Lila had a rebellious streak, she only dared to resist a little when Alexander was in a stable mood and not too angry.
But right now, just hearing the tone of his voice, she felt like death wasn't far off.
How could she dare to struggle?
Her hands clenched at her sides, even her heart couldn't help trembling. Still, she had to gather her courage to look up at him and try to explain, "I... I was just doing Ethan a favor. His parents were pressuring him to find a partner. I'm just a lie he told to deal with his parents, not his girlfriend."
"Is that so?"
He asked so dismissively, as if the answer "yes" or "no" didn't matter at all.
But Lila didn't dare be careless. She hurriedly nodded, "Yes, last time he taught me to drive and I never found the right chance to thank him. This time when he asked me to help with this favor, I agreed."
Alexander wasn't listening to what she was saying at all, and didn't care.
He walked toward her step by step, forcing Lila to back away until her spine hit the railing in the hallway and that still wasn't enough.
Alexander's eyes burned with raging fury as he stared at her, his words heavy with emphasis, "So good at making excuses to avoid your duties as a wife, yet going everywhere with Ethan. You want to be their family's daughter-in-law, hmm?"
"I didn't," she instinctively denied.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lila glimpsed his knuckles turning white as he gripped his wine glass, as if the next second the glass and its contents would be smashed into her face.
Her hands gripped the railing tightly, so scared she felt like she might cry any moment.
Alexander's expression was terrifyingly dark, "You're my wife, Alexander's wife. Your name is written in the spouse column of my marriage certificate. A married woman, yet you go behind my back to be someone else's girlfriend. Lila, do you think I'm dead?"
Lila shook her head desperately in denial, "No, it's not like that. I really was just helping Ethan with a favor. He and I didn't do anything."
When Lila saw Alexander suddenly raise the hand holding the wine glass, thinking he was going to throw it at her, she screamed in fright.
But the glass. He smashed it against the railing instead.
Red liquid ran down the white railing, finally making a mess on the marble floor below.
Lila's shoulders began to tremble uncontrollably.
