Chapter 66
Sophie couldn't figure out what Matthew was thinking. He cared so much about Bella, so why did he have Joshua say those things?
Wasn't he afraid of upsetting Bella?
"Oh." Bella responded, "I'll hang up now then."
"Okay. Bye." Joshua was very polite.
The call ended, and the car fell silent again.
The car drove into the underground parking garage. After parking, Joshua got out first to get the suitcase. Sophie got out and went to grab the luggage, but Matthew snatched it away again.
Matthew said to Joshua, "You can head back now."
"Okay." Joshua handed the car keys to Matthew.
Matthew took them and wheeled the suitcase toward the elevator.
Sophie followed.
After the two of them entered the elevator, they still didn't speak.
It wasn't until they got to the front door that Matthew closed it, pushed the suitcase aside, and suddenly pressed Sophie against the wall. His kiss came without warning.
Sophie was completely unprepared and caught off guard.
She placed her hands on Matthew's chest, pushing him.
He pressed firmly against her, impossible to push away.
Sophie didn't want to be kissed so inexplicably. She seized the opportunity to bite his lip, forcing him to stop.
He was breathing heavily, his eyes hiding dark, surging emotions that looked more and more like an abyss the longer you looked.
The two remained in a standoff. After a long while, Matthew finally loosened up a bit.
Sophie also released his lip.
"What are you doing?" Sophie was somewhat angry. With the knot in her heart, she didn't like being kissed so forcefully by him.
Besides, what were they to each other?
Why was he kissing her?
Matthew's chest rose and fell rapidly, his breathing irregular.
His hands were still pressed tightly against her back, feeling her body trembling slightly through the thin fabric.
"Do you know what I said when we switched seats?"
Sophie stared at him, taking a moment to remember what he had said.
She didn't care what he said.
"I said, you're my wife." Matthew's Adam's apple bobbed, his voice somewhat hoarse from the kiss.
Sophie's chest tightened.
She stared straight at him, her hands clenching slightly. "Matthew, I can't figure you out."
Matthew withdrew his hands and also pulled away from her, his eyes sweeping over her face with a cold expression again.
He turned around, his back to her, and began unbuttoning his shirt. "We're husband and wife. We have plenty of time ahead."
Sophie frowned.
What did he mean by that?
He really wasn't planning to divorce?
"You won't get divorced?" Sophie asked.
"Why would we?"
Matthew looked back at her. His open collar revealed his firm, strong chest. Two buttons below remained unfastened, giving a glimpse of his sexy abs.
Sophie made herself look away. "Why wouldn't we?"
"I remember saying that unless I die, I'll drag this out with you for as long as I can."
Sophie never expected he would still have this mindset.
She had married him in the first place because he was dying.
"I gave you a chance before. You were the one who didn't want to divorce." Matthew unbuttoned the remaining two buttons. "Now, I don't want to divorce anymore."
Sophie couldn't understand what he meant.
She asked urgently, "Don't you want to give Bella an explanation?"
Matthew narrowed his eyes. "Why would I need to give her an explanation?"
What exactly was going on between him and Bella?
He cared so much about Bella. Didn't that mean he wanted to get back together with her?
"I want a divorce." Sophie took a breath. "I want to divorce you."
Matthew's gaze drifted lightly away from her face. "You can try."
What did that mean?
"Matthew!" Sophie rushed over, walking up to him, furious. "What do you want? We have no feelings for each other. Why do you insist on keeping me tied down?"
Matthew looked down at her. "How can you say we have no feelings? Don't I have a life-saving debt over you? You're supposed to repay me with your body. You said it yourself, Sophie. Have you forgotten? We have a bond of gratitude between us."
Sophie bit her tongue.
How could he be so shameless?
Sophie adjusted her emotions, trying to calm herself down.
She was afraid she might lose her clarity soon.
She grabbed a bottle of water and drank half of it, then leaned against the dining table, staring at Matthew. "Let's talk this through properly."
Matthew took off his shirt. "I'm going to take a shower first."
Sophie was about to explode with anger.
He had already gone to the bedroom to get clothes and entered the bathroom.
Sophie just waited.
Half an hour later, he came out of the bathroom.
Wearing loose loungewear, he looked somewhat softer.
Only Sophie knew that deep down, he was actually a tough and domineering person.
"What do you want to talk about?" Matthew sat on the sofa, crossing his legs. His beautiful eyes held no trace of affection as he looked at Sophie indifferently.
Sophie had calmed down by now.
"Before, at the club, someone mentioned your name and they were ready to back off. But then someone else said they'd asked the person closest to you, and that you didn't have a wife at all. And even if you did, the relationship wasn't good, so they didn't need to worry. They could do whatever they wanted."
Matthew listened quietly.
"Is the person close to you Henry, or Joshua? Or maybe Bella?"
Sophie watched Matthew's expression carefully as she continued, "Henry and I get along okay, and Joshua is polite to me. As for Bella."
"When she added me, I knew she wasn't friendly. Whether it was her or not, as long as I'm married to you and you stay close to her, she and I will inevitably become enemies."
"She added you?" Matthew asked.
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Yes, she added me on Facebook. I also saw her Facebook posts. Most of them are about how thoughtful you are toward her. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but her posts always feel like she's showing off to me. Telling me how much you care about her."
Matthew frowned deeply.
He took out his phone and opened Bella's Facebook.
Before, he had always blocked Bella's Facebook.
When he clicked in, there was nothing there.
"You can't see it?" Sophie noticed his expression. "She blocked you?"
That was interesting.
If she was so devoted, why wouldn't she let Matthew see?
Could it be that it was only for others to see?
Matthew called Henry. "Send me screenshots of Bella's Facebook."
"What for? Why do I need to screenshot it? Just look at it yourself."
"Cut the crap."
After hanging up, Henry quickly sent the screenshots.
Apart from some promotional ads for the flower shop, there was nothing like what Sophie had described.
Matthew looked at Sophie with doubt.
"What's with that look?" Sophie narrowed her eyes. "You think I'm lying?"
She took out her phone, opened Bella's Facebook, and handed it to him.
Matthew took it, and indeed it was different from what Henry had sent.
Sophie glanced at his still-lit phone screen, saw the screenshot content, and couldn't help but laugh softly.
"Looks like I hold a unique position in Bella's heart. She posts content specifically for me to see."
