Chapter 65
Matthew heard the sound and turned around.
Sophie was sitting on the bed, just looking at him like that.
She didn't understand why he was acting this way, as if he was so devoted or something.
Getting out of bed, she went to wash up and change clothes.
When she came out, Matthew said, "I'll go to the company with you."
"What are you going there for?" Sophie picked up her laptop and bag, her tone cold.
Matthew didn't answer her. Instead, he walked ahead of her, opened the door, and looked at her. Clearly he was going no matter what.
Sophie couldn't control him, so she walked ahead.
They took a taxi. Sophie sat in the back, and Matthew got in too.
The whole ride was silent.
When they arrived at OG, Sophie got out of the car. She didn't see Eric's car.
Walking into the company, her colleagues didn't know what had happened last night and were smiling, asking her why she didn't show up.
Sophie asked, "Where's Eric?"
"He didn't come in."
Sophie turned around and saw Matthew standing outside with no intention of coming in.
She walked straight through the company entrance and took the elevator up.
She felt a bit uneasy, not knowing what Matthew was up to.
She had barely sat down when Sophie got a call from her supervisor, telling her to buy a plane ticket and return to Silverlight City right away.
"The work isn't finished yet." Sophie didn't understand what her supervisor meant.
"The boss said we're not working with OG anymore."
Sophie frowned. "Why?"
"Not sure. Anyway, you need to come back today."
The supervisor hung up, and Sophie still couldn't make sense of it.
Just then, the person in charge at OG also came to Sophie, asking her what was going on and why their company had called saying they weren't cooperating anymore.
Sophie shook her head.
She wondered if it had something to do with Eric.
She packed up her things, said goodbye to the people at OG, and went back to the hotel.
She booked a plane ticket, packed her luggage, and left the hotel.
She arrived at the airport waiting area and asked other colleagues in the group chat if they knew why they weren't working with OG anymore.
[No idea. But according to rumors, it seems OG had financial problems. Anyway, the problems are big. They probably can't take on projects anymore. The client found out about OG's problems and gave the project directly to us, so there's no need to work with OG at all.]
Sophie didn't think it was such a coincidence.
There were no problems before. How could problems come so quickly?
No one knew what was really going on, so no one asked anymore.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over her.
Sophie looked up and saw Matthew holding a plane ticket, sitting in the seat next to her.
He closed his eyes, taking a short rest.
Sophie glanced at his ticket—same flight as hers, and neighboring seats too.
Except there was one seat between their two positions.
Sophie looked away. Her mind was a bit chaotic, with too many thoughts.
The announcement called for boarding. Sophie stood up and looked at Matthew. He seemed to be asleep.
Sophie bit her lip. In the end, she still left without calling him.
This behavior wasn't very nice, but she just didn't want to call him.
On the plane, she found her seat, put away her luggage, and sat in the window seat.
The person next to her arrived too.
Matthew's seat was by the aisle, still empty for now.
Passengers boarded one after another, but Matthew still hadn't come.
She didn't think about it, put on her headphones, and turned to look out the window.
The person next to her moved, as if getting up.
Soon, they sat down again.
Sophie closed her eyes. It wasn't until the plane took off and stabilized that she opened them.
She casually glanced to the side, and her pupils instantly contracted.
It was Matthew.
He had switched seats with the passenger in the middle!
Matthew glanced at her, then closed his eyes again.
That glance seemed to say she was being childish.
Sophie knew that even if she didn't call him, the final announcement would have.
She just didn't expect he would switch seats with someone else.
With him sitting next to her, Sophie couldn't calm down.
The two hours weren't slow. After the plane landed, Sophie let out a big sigh of relief.
She turned on her phone, lots of messages.
Alex was asking why she left without saying anything.
Sophie then remembered she had forgotten to tell Alex.
She replied to him, saying she was already at Silverlight City airport. When he had time to come back to Silverlight City, she would treat him to dinner to thank him for saving her life.
The plane stopped, and everyone was preparing to leave.
The aisle was full of people.
Sophie looked at Matthew. He sat upright with no intention of getting up.
So Sophie wasn't in a hurry either. She had nothing to do today anyway.
When most people had left, Matthew finally stood up.
He took Sophie's suitcase down from the overhead compartment.
"Thanks." Sophie reached for it, but Matthew held the handle and didn't give it to her.
Sophie frowned. "I can carry it myself."
Matthew ignored her and pushed the luggage forward.
Sophie grabbed her laptop bag and quickly caught up with him, tugging at his sleeve. "Just give me the suitcase."
Matthew acted as if he didn't hear.
Walking out of the cabin, Sophie was finally able to walk alongside him. She reached for the handle.
With this grab, she grabbed Matthew's hand.
She quickly pulled away.
Matthew stopped and gazed at her with deep, calm eyes.
"I'll carry it myself." Sophie said it again.
Matthew gripped the handle tightly, clearly not going to give it to her, and continued walking forward.
Sophie felt a surge of frustration in her chest and caught up with his pace.
"Matthew, what exactly do you mean? You can talk. Why can't you just say it clearly?" Sophie was getting anxious.
Matthew finally spoke. "We'll talk at home."
Walking out of the airport, Joshua was already waiting at the exit.
Matthew handed the luggage directly to Joshua, who took it and put it in the trunk.
Sophie had just caught up with Matthew when the trunk was already closed.
"Mrs. Moore," Joshua greeted her, opening the back door and inviting her to get in.
Sophie was breathing hard, a bit angry, and shouted at Joshua, "I'm not any Mrs. Moore."
Joshua didn't even blink.
Sophie looked at Matthew. Matthew was also standing nearby, waiting for her to get in the car.
After a standoff, Sophie gritted her teeth and got in.
Matthew also got in, sitting next to her.
Sophie leaned to the side, her body almost pressed against the car window.
She couldn't understand Matthew's series of actions.
From last night until now, he had barely said a few words. She had no idea what he was thinking or what was going on in his mind.
On the road, Matthew's phone rang several times, and he hung up each time.
Not answering calls. There must be something going on.
Sophie guessed it was probably Bella calling.
Just then, Joshua's phone rang.
He glanced at the rearview mirror, hesitating whether to answer.
"It's Bella calling."
Sophie's lips curved into a mocking smile. She had guessed right.
Matthew didn't answer, so she called Joshua.
"Tell her the truth." Matthew's tone was flat.
Joshua immediately answered.
It was connected to the car's Bluetooth, and Bella's voice was amplified in the car.
"Joshua, Matthew's not answering his phone. Where did he go?"
Joshua's tone was businesslike. "Mr. Moore went to pick up Mrs. Moore. They're on their way back now."
