Chapter 106
After work, Sophie walked out of the company with her colleagues.
Her phone vibrated. She took it out and saw it was a Facebook message from Matthew.
Matthew: [Come here.]
Then she heard a car horn.
Sophie looked over and saw a black Rolls-Royce parked in a spot across from the company entrance.
Sophie had seen that car before. It was Matthew's.
Sophie ignored it.
Matthew: [Should I come get you?]
Another message from Matthew came through.
Sophie bit her lip.
Her colleagues were all leaving. Since Sophie had fallen behind while replying to the message, the people ahead who were rushing to catch the subway turned back and called out to her.
Sophie could only say, "You guys go ahead."
After they left, Sophie walked toward the car.
As she approached, Matthew got out of the car too.
His white shirt was wrinkle-free, his black dress pants perfectly straight. His clean outfit, simple black and white, looked very sophisticated on him.
Standing there, he was like a top male model on a runway, eye-catching.
Matthew just stood there, his gaze on Sophie more intense than today's sun.
"What are you doing here?" Sophie walked over, her tone unfriendly.
"Picking you up."
Sophie said irritably, "I know the way."
Matthew walked over and opened the passenger door, looking at her. His meaning was clear.
Since she was already standing there, Sophie got in.
The whole way, Sophie looked out the window, not talking to him.
It wasn't the way home, but Sophie didn't ask. He wasn't going to sell her off or anything.
The car drove to The Imperial Garden Hotel, the private restaurant that only served the Moore family during the holidays.
After they went in, the owner greeted them warmly as usual.
In the private room, Sophie still preferred sitting by the window where she could see the small bridges and flowing water outside, with koi swimming around.
Matthew ordered food, then walked over to her side, standing beside her and looking at the same view.
"Matthew, let's get divorced" Sophie said softly.
Matthew's hand in his pants pocket moved slightly. He turned his face. The dim, yellow, gentle light fell on her face, soft and peaceful.
"Really want a divorce?" This time, Matthew didn't refuse directly.
Sophie nodded, "Yeah."
She didn't go into the reasons again. She'd said the same things many times. Saying them again would be meaningless.
"Okay."
Sophie suddenly looked up at him.
After all this time, he finally agreed.
Sophie felt somewhat excited, but also had some other emotions.
He had been so firm about not divorcing before.
Sophie pushed away other thoughts and asked, "When should we go get it done?"
"In a couple of days." Matthew's tone was calm, not like he was joking.
"Why?" Sophie just wanted to get it done as soon as possible.
Matthew glanced at her, "Can't even wait a couple of days?"
Sophie answered, "It's just more annoying this way."
Matthew frowned, "Annoying?"
Sophie didn't look at him and replied, "Anyway, since we're getting divorced, better to do it sooner."
Matthew laughed in frustration, "In a few days."
Sophie looked up, "A few days? Didn't you say a couple of days?"
"You have a problem with that?" Matthew's tone turned cold.
Seeing this, Sophie opened her mouth. She was afraid he'd change his mind again.
"Can you give me a specific time?"
"Depends on my mood."
Sophie clenched her fists, wanting to hit him.
His superior jawline lifted slightly.
The owner personally brought in the dishes. Matthew walked over and sat down, calling to Sophie, whose back was radiating frustration, "Eat."
Sophie was too annoyed by him to have much appetite.
"If you want to divorce sooner, you'd better not argue with me." Matthew wiped the dishes and utensils himself, filled a bowl of soup, and placed it at the seat next to him.
This was clearly a threat.
Sophie was completely under his control.
She couldn't figure out how he'd gained the upper hand in this divorce matter.
Matthew waited for her with great patience.
Sophie gritted her teeth. She washed her hands and walked over very unhappily, preparing to sit far from him. He lightly tapped the spot next to him where the soup bowl was placed.
"Come here."
Sophie clenched her fists. She sat down.
Matthew peeled shrimp shells and put them in her bowl.
"I don't want any."
"Eat more."
Clearly, he wasn't allowing her to refuse.
If Sophie wasn't trying to keep him in a good mood so he'd go through with the paperwork sooner, she would have flipped the table and left long ago.
This meal, Sophie ate, feeling frustrated, but she ate her fill.
After dinner, the owner saw them to their car.
In others' eyes, they were a loving couple, but only Sophie knew how incompatible they were.
In the car, Sophie didn't say a word.
Matthew drove quietly. When waiting at a light up ahead, he asked, "Your place or mine?"
It seemed like he was asking her opinion, but he'd already made up his mind.
Sophie didn't want to answer such a meaningless question.
"Whatever." He could go wherever he wanted.
Sure enough, the car headed toward his place.
Sophie didn't care anymore, as long as he was happy and would finalize the divorce soon.
After getting out of the car, Matthew walked a few steps, then stopped and looked back at Sophie, who was moving as slowly as a snail.
"It's just a few steps. How long are you going to take?"
"Can't walk." Sophie didn't want to go to his place. She felt uncomfortable there.
Matthew came back, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her forward.
His pace wasn't fast, but his legs were long.
One normal step for him meant Sophie had to take two.
Sophie was dragged along by him until they got into the elevator.
Matthew kept holding her wrist without letting go. Sophie struggled a few times secretly, then finally gave up.
After getting out of the elevator, Matthew finally released her hand.
As soon as they entered, Matthew went to the bedroom.
Sophie stood in the living room. She had no intention of sleeping in his bedroom.
After a while, Matthew came out pushing a suitcase.
Sophie raised her eyebrows slightly. Was he going on a business trip?
With such a big suitcase, how long would he be gone?
Was he planning to divorce after coming back from the trip?
Matthew pulled the suitcase with one hand and grabbed her hand with the other, heading out.
"What are you doing?" Sophie had no idea what he was up to.
Matthew didn't say anything.
Sophie stared at his suitcase, and a wild thought flashed through her mind.
"Matthew, are you trying to elope with me?"
After asking, a hint of mockery flashed in Matthew's eyes.
Sophie also knew how ridiculous her question was.
The two of them weren't at the point of eloping.
The car headed toward the airport road.
Sophie had a pretty good idea now - he wanted her to see him off at the airport.
Sophie didn't care. If he was going on a business trip, fine. When he came back, the divorce was definitely happening.
