Chapter 105
This seemed to be the first time Emily was meeting Matthew alone.
His powerful presence and the commanding attitude of someone in a position of authority made Emily a bit intimidated.
Her best friend's man was so formidable that she couldn't handle it.
"Mr. Moore, you wanted to see me?" Emily had seen her share of the world, so she quickly composed herself and asked him.
Matthew asked, "What do you want to eat?"
Emily couldn't figure out what he was up to. "Anything's fine."
"Order first." Matthew called over a server and had Emily order.
Emily wanted to call Sophie for help.
But with him sitting right across from her, she didn't have the chance.
She randomly ordered two dishes and put down the menu. She wanted to ask again, but when she met Matthew's deep-set eyes, she shut her mouth.
To be able to live with a man like this and even throw little tantrums, Sophie really had some skills.
"Sophie's been acting a bit unusual lately." When Matthew brought up Sophie, his presence softened a bit.
Emily secretly breathed a sigh of relief. So he was here to find out about Sophie.
"What has she talked to you about?" Matthew asked directly.
"Nothing much, just some secrets between girls." Emily didn't want to sell Sophie out.
Sophie had told her so much because she considered her a good friend.
If she told Matthew everything Sophie had said to her, it would be betraying Sophie's trust.
Matthew stared at Emily, his wolf-like dangerous eyes seeing right through her little schemes.
"I'm planning to maintain a long-term marriage with her." Matthew's voice was cold. "As her friend, you should want us to be happy together, right?"
Emily bit her lip. She couldn't deny that she wanted Sophie to be happy.
"Mr. Moore, if you really want your marriage to be happy, why not pay more attention to her and give her enough security? Then she'll naturally be willing to tell you everything."
Matthew narrowed his eyes. "So, what did she tell you?"
Emily pressed her lips together.
Clearly, Matthew had to get something out of her today, or he wasn't going to leave.
Emily was still considering.
The dishes were brought to the table. Matthew was very patient.
"Mr. Moore." Emily sounded somewhat helpless. "I don't want to get involved in your relationship."
"I'm not asking you to get involved."
Emily poured herself a cup of tea and took a sip to soothe her throat and calm her slightly nervous mood. "Actually, Sophie didn't really tell me much. She just feels like you don't love her, and that you two will eventually divorce."
She believed Sophie had probably said this to Matthew before too.
Matthew frowned. "Nothing else?"
"What else could there be?" Emily sighed lightly. "Mr. Moore, as Sophie's friend, I also want to ask you—what exactly are your feelings toward her?"
Matthew's expression became serious. He wasn't going to discuss this with Emily.
"Take your time eating."
Emily's eyes widened in confusion.
Matthew had already stood up and walked out of the private room.
Emily opened her mouth, then quickly called Sophie to tell her what happened.
Sophie was surprised that Matthew would seek out Emily to ask about her.
"He still cares about you." Emily could tell.
"Who knows what he actually cares about."
The company had been gloomy lately, with everyone spreading rumors that the boss and his wife were getting divorced.
In the break room, several people were talking in hushed voices.
"The boss's wife is so naive, actually letting her best friend have a baby with her husband."
"Originally they said the baby would be raised by the boss and his wife after birth, and they even signed a contract. But then the VP changed her mind and won't let go of custody."
"Of course she won't let go. Only an idiot would."
"Man, it's so dramatic."
"I used to read novels and think those plots were dramatic, but fiction comes from life. Reality is even more dramatic than novels."
"Good thing I don't have a best friend. Being betrayed by your best friend is too tragic."
Sophie glanced at the door. "Someone's coming."
Everyone quickly dispersed.
"Your husband is so outstanding—did you guard against your best friend?" After everyone left, another colleague walked in and said this.
Sophie looked at her. It was Nancy Lewis from the PR department, tall and beautiful. Before joining the company, she'd been a magazine model.
Supposedly she couldn't stand the unspoken rules in the modeling world, so she quit.
Sophie had no need to respond to such questions.
Besides, they weren't even close.
Sophie picked up her tea cup and walked straight out.
She returned to her desk to work. Her phone vibrated several times.
She looked and saw text messages from an unknown number.
Several very clear photos.
In the photos were Matthew and Emily.
The person had chosen excellent angles that made the two look very close together, and the lighting and composition were carefully done to create an ambiguous atmosphere.
Sophie looked at these photos and smiled as she replied, "Nice photos."
She put down her phone, not planning to engage further.
She couldn't speak for other people's best friends, but her best friend... would absolutely never backstab her.
Sophie's mood wasn't affected by the photos at all. When she had some free time, she downloaded the photos and forwarded them to Emily.
Emily exclaimed when she saw them.
[Who took these? They look so good!]
Sophie couldn't help but laugh when she saw this and called her. "Aren't you going to explain?"
"Explain what?" Emily seemed to be admiring them. "You don't know how nervous I was at the time. Your man's presence—I really wanted to run away every second."
"He's not my man."
"He's not my man either." Emily made a sound. "Speaking of which, I should screenshot these photos and post them on Facebook."
Suddenly, Emily asked, "Wait, that's not right. What's the photographer's intention? Sending you photos of me and Matthew together... are they trying to tell you that Matthew and I are having an affair?"
After Emily finished speaking, Sophie heard her slam the table hard on her end.
"Who is it? So disgusting." Emily cursed angrily.
Sophie couldn't help but laugh at her reaction. "All I can say is they're out of tricks. They should have investigated how solid our friendship is. I'd rather give up a man than give up our friendship."
"I'm speechless." Emily was exasperated. "If I find out who it is, I'll give them a piece of my mind."
"These are just petty tricks. What those people don't know is that if you liked Matthew, I could directly pack him up and send him to your place."
Emily said in horror, "Don't. I can't handle him."
Sophie said, "I'm just making a comparison. Why are you reacting so strongly?"
Emily said, "Having that meal with him today, you don't know—when he was sitting across from me, I wanted to run away. Really, people like that, I'll keep my distance from for the rest of my life. Can't deal with it." Emily shook her head.
Sophie could imagine Emily's expression right now and held back her laughter. "You really understand what I'm going through."
