Chapter 89
Amelia's examining gaze fell on William, a flash of insight in her eyes.
She could tell this man had an unusual relationship with Emily.
Facing Amelia's question, William felt a trace of nervousness spreading through him.
"Hello, I'm Emily's friend, William." As he spoke, he took the initiative to extend his hand to shake Amelia's.
Amelia nodded slightly, reaching out to shake his hand lightly before withdrawing it and turning back to Emily with a gentle look.
"Mom, I want to take you home." Emily suddenly spoke up. Amelia froze, instantly tempted, but she still hardened her heart.
"You're already raising two children on your own - life is hard enough. If you add me as another burden, I'm afraid things will only get harder for you."
Hearing these words from Amelia, Emily felt a sharp pain in her heart. "Mom, we moved to a new house. There's plenty of space now, and I think I have the ability to protect you."
Thinking back to that conversation with William, Emily looked at her with firm determination.
Amelia looked at her serious expression and suddenly smiled.
Her voice was gentle. "I know you have the ability now. It's just that if I go home with you, I'll still inevitably cause you trouble. You know what kind of person he is - he's not someone who gives up easily."
At this, Amelia let out a soft sigh.
Emily's hand clenched into a fist at her side, a flash of hatred in her eyes.
If it weren't for Brian interfering, Amelia wouldn't be unable to return home.
Seeing Emily like this, Amelia reached out and placed her hand on her shoulder. "This nursing home has pretty good overall conditions, and the caregivers are attentive. I'm doing fine living here."
Though she said this, she still felt somewhat lonely inside.
After experiencing that failed marriage with Brian, now seeing Emily doing better and better with two adorable grandchildren, she naturally wanted to be by the children's side.
But after being married to him, she had long since seen Brian's true nature.
Last time, Brian could disregard their past and ruthlessly try to take her life - he certainly wouldn't show mercy now.
Hearing Amelia's refusal, Emily felt awful.
She had finally reached a point where she could bring Amelia back, yet she was still being so cautious, which was heartbreaking.
"Mom, I know you still have concerns, but you can try to trust me - after all, I'm your daughter." Emily played the emotional card.
Amelia's expression showed some wavering, but ultimately returned to calm. "No."
That simple answer seemed to drain all her energy, making her instantly look more dejected.
"You live your life well, don't worry about me." Amelia still wore a gentle smile on her face, though her eyes seemed to hold more resignation.
"About bringing you home, Emily has discussed it with me, so I roughly know the situation. You might not realize it now, but Emily's career is developing quite well and she has financial means. You can try to trust her." When the atmosphere became tense, William spoke up, his expression completely sincere and honest.
Hearing his voice, Amelia shifted her gaze back to him.
"Forget it, I won't be a burden to Emily." As Amelia spoke, she rubbed her waist.
Emily caught this small gesture and spoke again with renewed determination. "Mom, I have the ability now. I absolutely won't let you live here alone. This is the perfect time for our family to reunite. Please come back with me."
Amelia lowered her eyes slightly and slowly shook her head.
"I'm not going." She said it lightly, a touch of weariness in her expression. "It's getting late now, and the children are still at home. You should go back."
She didn't want to become Emily's burden.
Even though Amelia also wanted the family to be together.
"The house Emily lives in now is in a new development. That person would never imagine she could afford to buy a place there, so you can safely move in." William began approaching it from a practical angle. "Besides, Emily's career is just taking off, and the children need someone to watch them. If you don't help, she won't be able to find someone reliable right away."
At his words, Amelia was indeed moved.
"Exactly, even if we found the right person, outsiders can never be as trustworthy as family." Emily understood William's meaning immediately and quickly added, her eyes full of hope. "The children are growing up now and need someone to watch them even more. If no one helps me, I can't balance both career and family."
Emily played pitiful, looking utterly wronged.
Amelia knew Emily was doing this to put her mind at ease and help her feel comfortable going home, but she still couldn't get past that mental barrier.
"The children are doing fine now. If you have the means, you can hire a nanny for them. I won't go." Amelia's attitude was firm.
"Why?" Emily frowned, looking confused.
"I have the ability now, and the children and I need you." She emphasized Amelia's importance.
"If I go back now and he really tracks down our location, the children could be in danger too. I can't put you all at risk just for my own selfish desires." Amelia was very clear-headed about this, even coldly rational.
"I naturally have ways to keep him from finding us." As Emily said this, she instinctively looked at William.
William happened to meet her gaze, and Emily nodded.
Amelia keenly noticed the interaction between them, and unclear emotions flashed through her heart.
These two really did have an unusual relationship.
She had sensed it when she first saw them, but now she truly felt it.
"Don't worry, we absolutely have the ability to protect you and the children."
William said this with great confidence.
Now that he had shown his face in public, he would naturally return to the Brown family.
Before long, he would be able to regain control of the Brown Group.
Moreover, he had his own resources - he definitely wouldn't let Brian succeed easily.
Amelia looked at him with some contemplation.
She could tell William was no ordinary person.
Though she didn't know how Emily had met him, William clearly had feelings for Emily.
If that was the case, then she could indeed use William's influence to go home.
Amelia wasn't a fool - she knew how to leverage power when needed.
