Chapter 88
"You make a good point. I really should leave Brian some room to maneuver, but I'm not happy about letting him off so easily."
"Don't worry, there's plenty of time."
William's simple response made Emily's eyes light up, and suddenly everything became clear.
That's right, there was still time, and there would be more opportunities later.
But if she acted rashly now and tipped him off, she'd waste this opportunity.
"So what can I do now?" Emily murmured, unsure if she was asking herself or William.
"Bring your mother here, of course," William replied. "Isn't that what you already decided? Since you've made up your mind, just do it. Don't worry about anything else."
After thinking it through carefully, Emily nodded gently.
William was right. That's exactly what she should do.
In that case, she had nothing to worry about.
"I'll go see my mother this afternoon." Emily let out a breath, feeling much more relaxed.
Before this, she'd been really struggling, not knowing how to protect her mother.
But after talking with William, she had a clear plan.
Brian really did care a lot about his reputation.
When Emily first sent her mother to the nursing home, Brian had even helped cover it up, afraid people would find out about this scandal.
That alone showed how guilty he felt.
Over the years, Brian hadn't made things too difficult for mother and daughter—his attention was elsewhere.
Thinking this through, Emily felt much more at ease.
After the meal, Emily took the children back home.
She'd planned to go to the nursing home alone to pick up her mother, but William insisted on going with her.
And his reason was solid.
Emily had completely offended Brian. Who knew if he had people watching her now?
If he did, where could a fragile woman like Emily escape to?
So it was better for William to go along. If something really happened, at least there'd be someone to help.
That way he could feel more at ease too.
Emily didn't realize this last part was William's little bit of selfishness, but she agreed.
After settling the children, the two set off.
"Is this your car?" Emily looked around the interior and nodded. "Nice, it's really luxurious. Clearly expensive. By the way, didn't you say you were going back to the Brown family? Why haven't you gone yet? Or did you change your mind?"
"Not at all." William drove himself, eyes on the road. "I am going back, just not now. I'm waiting for the right moment."
"The right moment?" Emily didn't understand.
William didn't plan to explain much, simply saying, "You'll understand soon enough."
"Why would I understand?" Emily still didn't get it. "What does you going back to the Brown family have to do with me? Why are you talking so mysteriously?"
Instead of answering, William asked, "From what you're saying, it sounds like you can't wait to distance yourself from me."
"I didn't say that." Emily quickly denied it. "I just think the Brown family's affairs don't need my involvement."
This was Emily's honest thought.
Her own life was already a mess—how could she have the energy to worry about others?
Besides, even if she wanted to help, she couldn't!
Wars between wealthy families were like battles between gods. If she dared to get involved, she wouldn't even know how she died, and might even drag Nina and Oscar down with her.
Rather than that, better to stay far away.
However, thinking about how much William had helped her, Emily couldn't just ignore him completely.
She wasn't ungrateful. When someone helped her, how could she remain indifferent?
At the very least, she felt grateful.
After thinking, Emily corrected herself. "If someday you really need my help, just ask. As long as it's something I can do, I definitely won't refuse."
Her eyes were sincere, completely transparent, without any pretense. Every word was clear, showing how serious she was.
William's heart trembled slightly.
Though he appeared to be driving normally, seemingly unmoved, his slightly trembling eyes betrayed his current thoughts.
"I'm serious." Seeing William stay silent, Emily emphasized again. "But I guess you don't really care, right? You're so capable, what could I possibly help you with?"
"But this is still my promise to you. After all, I did save your life, didn't I?" Emily tried to lighten the mood, flashing William a bright smile.
He turned to look at her, his expression softening. "That's right, you did save my life."
"Then it's settled. If you need my help in the future, don't you dare refuse."
Emily smiled confidently. "Don't worry, as long as I can do it, I'll give it my all."
Full of confidence, she didn't notice the flash of light and joy in William's eyes.
He only said he'd ask Emily for help, but didn't say what kind of help.
Since she'd already agreed, he didn't need to be polite with Emily.
He'd hold onto this promise for now, and when the time was right, he'd collect on it.
Hopefully she'd still remember today's promise then.
The nursing home was quite far. Since Emily lived in the suburbs, William drove for nearly an hour before finally arriving.
When they went upstairs and opened the door, Emily saw her mother sitting by the window, gazing at the distant scenery.
She wore hospital clothes, but her hair was neatly combed and her posture was proper.
At first glance, she didn't seem like a patient at all, but a normal person.
"Mom," Emily called softly.
Amelia turned around, and seeing Emily, her eyes immediately brightened. "Emily, you're here."
She quickly stood up, looking excited. "I've been thinking about you every day, and you're finally here. What have you been busy with these days? Are you okay? Why haven't you come for so long? Did something happen?"
"Of course not." Emily gripped her mother's hands tightly, forcing a bright smile. "Mom, I really have been very busy. It's my fault for not coming to see you sooner."
"But from now on, we won't have to be apart anymore, because I'm taking you away from here. You'll live with me from now on, okay?"
When she said this, Emily's voice was trembling.
She'd been waiting for this for so long.
Fortunately, the doctor said Amelia was recovering well, or Emily wouldn't have dared take the risk.
But now it was fine. As long as Amelia wasn't exposed to stress, surely one day she'd fully recover.
Then their family would truly be reunited.
Hearing she could leave the nursing home, Amelia was clearly happy.
She pulled Emily toward the bed. Only then did she notice William standing nearby, and her smile paused slightly. "Who's this?"
