Chapter 78 Scarlett, Get Out of My World
Scarlett felt like she'd been hit in the chest, a painful ache welling up inside her, and her eyes turned red.
Afraid he might notice, she quickly lowered her head.
Daniel had only recently been willing to kiss her, so now he no longer saw her as a sister, but purely as Manand a woman.
"Scarlett, tell me, do you really have no feelings for me, no love at all?"
Just then, Daniel's slender fingers gently lifted Scarlett's chin.
His deep eyes fixed on her as he asked slowly.
Daniel's words made Scarlett's heart flutter and sink even more than any sweet talk could.
But before that bit of sweetness in her heart could spread, it was replaced by bitterness.
If this had been six months ago, or even two months ago, she would have been over the moon if Daniel treated her like this.
But now, it was too late.
Even though her heart still fluttered, she no longer wanted to turn back, and she'd lost the courage to do so.
Scarlett looked at Daniel, the man she loved so deeply, and curved her pale lips slightly.
"Yes, I have no feelings left."
Her words made Daniel's whole body turn cold, and his grip on Scarlett's chin tightened.
"Did you ever love me?"
Scarlett's heart ached. How could she not have loved him? Even now, she hadn't truly moved on.
But...
She thought back to that night, when her body was torn and stitched up, lying in bed needing his comfort.
He had disappeared without a trace. When she finally got through to him on the phone, with nervous anticipation, she confessed her feelings.
She said, "I'm sorry, but I like you."
She still remembered his cold response.
"Don't call me that anymore. Don't you find it disgusting? Scarlett, to stay with the Wilson family, you'll really stop at nothing!"
He said she disgusted him, that her feelings and love disgusted him.
After that, Scarlett didn't dare confess again.
When they got their marriage license at twenty, she told him.
"Daniel, I'll be the best wife, take care of you, be with you, never leave you. Can you try to build this marriage with me?"
She hid her love for him in simple words. How could the best wife not love her husband?
But he said, "Scarlett, stop wasting your energy acting. It's better for both of us if we're just contractual spouses."
What he threw at her was a fake marriage contract. Even so, she was still foolish enough not to give up.
Two years had passed, draining all her energy.
Now, Daniel was asking this question again. How should she answer?
Telling the truth would only let him humiliate her one more time.
They were getting divorced anyway, there was no need. Scarlett didn't want to get tangled up anymore.
She looked at Daniel and shook her head firmly.
"No, I don't love you."
In her heart, she thought silently, yes, someday in the future, Scarlett would stop loving Daniel.
She could do it.
Daniel stared at Scarlett before him. Her eyes were clean and clear, transparent and calm, without any emotion.
He knew what she looked like when she lied, completely different from this calmness.
She had never loved him.
Daniel's thin lips curved into a mocking smile. His face showed no emotion as he released his grip on Scarlett's chin.
He slowly stepped back and stood up.
"Good that you don't. You're right, divorce is indeed the best choice for us."
Scarlett pressed her lips together and curved her eyes slightly.
"Okay, Daniel, after the divorce we'll still be like before, I..."
But Daniel cut her off. His cold eyes looked down at her from above.
"Wrong. I, Daniel, will not treat my ex-wife like a sister! Scarlett, stop dreaming. We can never be siblings again in this lifetime! Even if you don't find it disgusting, my future wife won't accept it! After divorce, we'll never see each other again."
Scarlett's face instantly turned pale as paper. Her expression froze, and her heart felt hollow.
After a long moment, she forced a smile. "Okay, I understand."
Daniel stared at her intently, not missing any change in her expression. Watching the smile spread across her lips, his hands suddenly clenched tight.
Daniel's voice seemed to squeeze out from his chest. "Very good, Scarlett. Get out of my world and stay far away! Don't ever appear in front of me again!"
"Okay."
"Come up with thirty million dollars as soon as possible."
"Okay."
"Okay."
Watching Scarlett with her cold face, saying "okay" to everything, Daniel felt chilled to the bone, his teeth clenched.
She didn't love him. Scarlett, forced to stay by his side, was sad and tired, not happy at all.
She just wanted to escape.
Keeping her by force had no meaning.
Daniel didn't look at Scarlett again. He turned and strode away.
As his figure disappeared from the hospital room doorway, Scarlett fell back onto the bed, tears instantly bursting forth.
She curled up, trembling uncontrollably, her mouth full of the taste of blood.
He had let her go.
Scarlett could feel it. This time he really wouldn't try to keep her or make things difficult for her anymore.
It was what she'd wanted, so why didn't she feel any sense of relief at all?
Probably because, in the end...
She had lost Daniel.
Scarlett cried for a long time. When she finally calmed down and picked up her phone to contact Sarah to come get her, she saw the photo Alice had sent.
In the photo, Daniel was still wearing the same clothes from when he left that morning. In a club's private room, Alice was leaning happily against him.
All emotion drained from Scarlett's eyes. At this moment, she felt incredibly grateful.
She was glad she hadn't fallen for Daniel's warmth and attempts to keep her just now. She also hoped that this time, Daniel would truly let go.
Hospital parking lot.
The black Cullinan hadn't even pulled into a parking spot when its owner ordered it to leave the hospital.
Tom had bought breakfast that morning as instructed, still packed in the thermos, never delivered to the hospital room.
The atmosphere in the car was extremely tense. Daniel in the back seat looked no different than usual, but Tom could feel a destructive, oppressive aura.
He really felt like crying.
He'd thought that after Daniel took care of Scarlett all night, they might make up today.
But things had gotten even worse.
Tom was on edge the whole way, not daring to say a word.
Tom thought Daniel's mood would affect his work, but unexpectedly, Daniel didn't even go home to change clothes. He went straight to the Star Group.
He immediately got into work mode, and his efficiency that morning was even higher than usual.
After finishing the morning's work and returning to his office, Tom reported the afternoon's schedule.
"Miss Brown's solo concert. Mrs. Blair Wilson just called to remind Mr. Daniel Wilson not to miss it."
Daniel nodded to show he understood.
So Daniel was really going.
Tom was completely confused. Did Daniel actually like Alice?
He left the office. Daniel sat for a moment, then reached down to open the bottom drawer of his desk.
Opening the drawer, he took out a jewelry box and a diary.
The jewelry box was the one Daniel had with him that time when Scarlett smashed cake on his car window.
Opening the box, inside was the Wilson family's heirloom jade bracelet of exceptional quality.
Daniel's fingertips brushed over the bracelet, his eyes darkening with gloom.
He suddenly grabbed the bracelet and squeezed it hard, so hard that veins bulged on the back of his hand, as if he wanted to crush it.
The out-of-control, violent emotion was quickly suppressed, and the bracelet eventually lay back in the box.
The box closed, like it was waiting for an owner who would never come, sealed away forever.
Daniel tossed the box back in the drawer, accidentally knocking the diary to the floor.
The diary fell open, and on the aged pages, Scarlett's familiar handwriting, with its distinctive character, had written down flowing emotions.
Today is the 1,196th day of loving William.
That whole page was filled with William's name.
A few teardrops had blurred the writing—Scarlett's unspoken secret love.
The ironic thing was, Scarlett had learned to write by copying his handwriting since childhood.
Using handwriting similar to his to write these things, and she still claimed to be heartless.
Daniel stared at the diary, his eyes heavy with darkness, then suddenly lifted his foot and ground it down hard.
The next day.
Chris came to the Star Group for a project meeting. After the meeting ended, he insisted on following Daniel back to his office to mooch a cup of coffee.
Daniel ignored him and focused on reading the project proposal.
Tom brought Chris coffee. Chris took one sip and put it down with a frown. He looked at Daniel behind the desk.
"What's going on? Why doesn't the coffee here taste like it used to? You're not deliberately treating me badly, are you?"
He stood up from the sofa area and came to Daniel's desk, bending down to take Daniel's cup of coffee and tasting it.
Daniel hadn't touched his coffee yet, so he didn't stop him.
But Chris quickly frowned. "Really just as bad. Who made this? What a waste of good coffee beans."
He put down the cup. "Seriously Daniel, it's hard to go from luxury to simplicity. Did you change assistants? The one who used to make coffee..."
Before he could finish, Daniel heavily threw the project proposal on the desk, cold pressure spreading.
"Annoying!"
Most people would take the hint when Daniel acted like this, but unfortunately Chris was the type who loved stirring things up. He immediately raised an eyebrow.
"I get it now. The one who used to make coffee was Scarlett, right? No wonder it's different—she was as good as a professional barista.
Daniel, for the sake of this coffee, you should hurry up and get Scarlett back."
Daniel looked up, his cold gaze like a knife.
"I'm in a bad mood today and really want to do something to make someone suffer. Want to try?"
Chris felt a chill on his neck and immediately made a zipping motion over his mouth, then turned and left.
Tom went to see him out. Chris pulled out his phone and looked at it while walking to the elevator, still curious.
"What's going on with Daniel and Scarlett?"
Tom smiled politely and shook his head. It wasn't that he wouldn't say—he genuinely didn't know what was going on.
But Chris suddenly stopped in his tracks, looking at something and exclaiming.
"Wow, Daniel and Scarlett are really planning to find other people from now on."
Daniel and Scarlett were both trending on social media, but neither with their marriage partner.
