Chapter 77 Scarlett, I Wouldn't Kiss My Own Sister Like This
Before the nurse could finish speaking, there was a crash.
Scarlett had a sudden idea and knocked over the water glass, which shattered into pieces on the floor.
With one hand propped on the bedside table and half her body leaning off the hospital bed, Scarlett looked unstable. Daniel frowned and bent down to help her back into position.
"If you want water, just tell me! Why are you moving around? Or do you just not want to trouble me that badly right now?"
Scarlett's face showed panic and confusion, like a child who had done something wrong.
"I didn't realize I'd have no strength at all."
Daniel's anger immediately faded, and he helped her lie back down.
Forget it—she was sick. What was the point of arguing with her?
He helplessly ruffled her hair, then touched her warm little face and frowned. "Why aren't you taking fever medicine?"
With all the commotion, the nurse had already left.
Tom came over to clean up the broken pieces on the floor. Scarlett explained, "When the doctor checked earlier, the fever wasn't this bad yet. If I can get through it without fever medicine, it's better to take less. I can always take it later if the fever doesn't go down."
Under the blanket, Scarlett nervously pinched her fingers, afraid Daniel would suspect something.
But Daniel didn't seem to think much of it. He went to get cold water, wrung out a towel to wipe Scarlett's face and neck, then moved to unbutton her collar.
Scarlett felt a bit embarrassed and grabbed his hand.
"I can do it myself."
Daniel looked at her calmly. "You're being shy and fussy at a time like this?"
Scarlett felt helpless. "We're getting divorced."
"We haven't divorced yet. And even if we did, I'd still be your family. It's not like I didn't take care of you when we were kids."
He forcefully pulled her hand away and started unbuttoning her shirt.
Scarlett wanted to say that was when they were kids—how could it be the same as now?
After they got married, he really hadn't taken care of her anymore. It was normal for her to feel uncomfortable.
But she knew that even if she said something, Daniel wouldn't stop.
She just didn't understand why, now that they'd decided to divorce, he was suddenly caring for her and looking after her.
Was it because in his mind, the marriage was already over, and he was treating her like a sister again?
That would be fine, Scarlett thought.
Daniel wiped Scarlett's armpits and chest, then moved to pull down her pants, even wiping her inner thighs.
He was patient, changing the water several times and pressing on several pressure points for her.
Scarlett couldn't chase him away, and she was worried that if her temperature didn't go down, she wouldn't be able to take the fever medicine.
Fortunately, after an hour, her temperature dropped. But Daniel had made her drink several glasses of water, plus the IV fluids.
Now she needed to use the bathroom.
When Scarlett anxiously looked at the IV bag for the third time, Daniel suddenly pulled back her blanket.
"What are you doing?"
"Helping you to the bathroom."
Scarlett bit her lip. "How did you know?"
She had wanted to hold it until the IV was finished, but the bag was only a third empty.
She was too embarrassed to ask Daniel for help, but somehow he'd figured it out anyway.
Daniel smiled. "You only have one bladder. Take care of it."
Scarlett was speechless.
Daniel carried the IV bag and helped Scarlett into the bathroom. Having Daniel watch her was really awkward.
"Turn around."
Daniel cooperated and turned away.
Scarlett had worn pajamas when she left home, which were at least easy to take off.
She steeled herself and squatted down, but nothing happened for a long time. She couldn't go.
Although they'd been married for two years, they hadn't lived together during that time. Using the bathroom in front of him like this, especially when they were about to divorce...
Just as Scarlett was stuck in this awkward situation, she heard Daniel say:
"Scarlett, if you keep dragging this out, I'll make you pee like a baby..."
Scarlett was probably so scared by the image he described that she stopped holding back.
The sound was a bit loud, and she immediately covered her face.
Daniel caught a glimpse of her bright red ears from the corner of his eye, and his thin lips curved up slightly.
When they came out of the bathroom, Scarlett's face was still flushed. She pulled the blanket over herself and closed her eyes, pretending to sleep.
But her body was probably exhausted, because she accidentally fell asleep for real.
When she woke up again, daylight was already bright outside.
Scarlett opened her eyes and saw Daniel asleep by her hospital bed.
The beds in the regular ward were narrow, and Daniel was slumped over, his tall frame looking incredibly cramped.
His usually impeccable hair was slightly messy, with fine strands covering his sharp brows and eyes.
Scarlett was stunned. She really hadn't expected him to stay and watch over her all night.
A beam of light was slowly creeping up the hospital bed, moving closer. Scarlett raised her hand, blocking the morning light that was about to fall on Daniel's eyes.
In the quiet stillness with dust floating in the air, she traced his features with her gaze.
"Miss, your husband's mouth may be a bit harsh, but he really cares about you. You had another fever in the middle of the night, and he took care of you all night. He was very patient."
Vida from the next bed said in a low voice.
Scarlett came back to her senses and looked over, giving Vida a small smile.
"I can see you two still have feelings for each other. Why are you going through with a divorce? Every couple has friction—don't be impulsive, think it over some more."
A bleak smile appeared on Scarlett's lips.
"It's not impulsive. We've thought it through carefully. We can't go on. What's between us isn't the kind of feelings you're thinking of."
Vida sighed and didn't push further. After all, they were strangers. She got out of bed and went for a walk.
Scarlett stared blankly into space, but the hand she'd been holding over Daniel's eyes was suddenly grasped.
She looked over—Daniel was awake. Scarlett fell into Daniel's deep, dark eyes, her heart tightening.
"You're awake?"
Daniel didn't move, just stayed there holding her hand.
"Not that kind of feelings? Then what kind of feelings do we have?"
Scarlett hadn't expected him to have heard that.
Her voice was hoarse as she spoke. "You know."
"I don't know. Why don't you tell me?" Daniel lifted his head, his thin lips holding a smile without warmth.
Scarlett bit the tip of her tongue. "Brother..."
Before Scarlett could finish, Daniel suddenly leaned forward and blocked her lips, cutting off all her unfinished words.
His breath was scorching, his kiss fierce.
Scarlett was forced to tilt her head back, enduring the overwhelming heat. Maybe it was because the scene she'd seen when she opened her eyes was too warm and beautiful.
She easily fell into his teasing and passion, forgetting to resist, forgetting to breathe.
By the time she came to her senses, her face was flushed red.
Only then did Daniel release her. He pressed his forehead against hers, his eyes deep and intense.
"Siblings? So you think what we're doing now is incest?"
Scarlett was breathing hard, her mind completely blank, unable to fully understand what he meant.
He was the one who had always resisted her, resisted this relationship, and neglected her for four years.
He was the one who refused to have children with her, who thought it would be incest.
Daniel's large hand cupped Scarlett's face. "Scarlett, I would never kiss my sister like this. Understand?"
