Chapter 152 She Is Not an Ex-Girlfriend
Daniel pressed his thin lips together slightly. "Is it that important? That child won't affect our life anyway."
Daniel frowned slightly. He clearly didn't want to bring up this topic.
He didn't understand why Scarlett had to get to the bottom of it.
The child wasn't his, and the child wouldn't be living with them in the future anyway.
After some time, when the child was born, she would naturally find out.
But Scarlett's nose turned red, and she said with both grievance and anger, "But that child's existence is already affecting our life! I'm your wife. If you want me to accept a child from your beloved ex-girlfriend, you should at least tell me why! Or is it that you still can't forget Alice, so you even have to take care of someone else's baby in her belly?"
Scarlett's dissatisfaction flared up again because of his evasive attitude. She pulled her hand away from Daniel's, stood up, and continued.
"Alice has been stirring up trouble every day, relying on the child in her belly. Do you really think she'll settle down once the child is born?
You want our child to be brothers with that child, which means Alice will keep haunting me like a ghost. I don't want to live even one day like that.
If Daniel is going to keep this attitude, then please do me a favor and let Bunny and me leave. I just want a simple, peaceful life!"
Her attitude was extremely firm. No matter how much she loved Daniel, no matter how reluctant she was to leave, she was exhausted and fed up.
That wasn't the life she wanted or the future she hoped for.
After Scarlett finished speaking angrily, she turned to leave.
Daniel frowned, reached out to grab her arm, and pulled her back.
Scarlett turned around uncontrollably, stumbling a step toward him. Daniel sat on the edge of the bed, spread his long legs apart, and trapped Scarlett between his thighs so she couldn't move.
"Get up! This is so annoying, watch out or I'll hit you!"
Scarlett said through gritted teeth. Daniel grabbed her clenched little fist and frowned.
"Who told you Alice was my ex-girlfriend? When did I ever have that kind of relationship with her? How come I don't know about it?"
Scarlett froze, her mind like a bomb had been thrown into it, blown completely blank.
Her body went limp, and she stared at Daniel in a daze.
"Weren't you two already together abroad?"
Daniel went abroad to study when he was seventeen, and within a couple of years, Alice was also sent over by the Brown family.
At that time, Scarlett and Daniel were separated by time zones and distance, so they inevitably contacted each other less. She felt he was gradually drifting further and further away from her.
But it was also during that time that Alice would occasionally send Scarlett photos of Daniel on campus, at parties, at the overseas branch office, and various other occasions.
Alice would also talk about things between her and Daniel.
"Scarlett, Daniel has his graduation ceremony today. He invited me to come. All his friends and classmates will be there. Which dress do you think I should wear? I'm so nervous."
"Scarlett, Daniel is about to officially take over the overseas branch. Do you think this tie would be appropriate for me to give him?"
Alice would also post ambiguous Facebook updates.
"Next week is his birthday, our first birthday officially together. I've prepared my first kiss as a gift. I hope he'll be surprised."
The accompanying photo was a work picture of Daniel.
Scarlett still remembered how embarrassed and helpless she looked when she saw that Facebook post.
She was in the university cafeteria at the time, having just gotten her food.
Her hand shook, the steel tray fell to the ground in a mess, and her leg was badly burned. Everyone was looking at her.
But she couldn't care about those strange looks or the pain. She squatted on the ground holding her phone, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
Until before his birthday, she refused to believe it and didn't want to believe it.
She had called him, but could never reach him.
Holding onto one last thread of hope, she secretly bought a plane ticket with the gift she had prepared long ago and flew abroad.
But what she saw was Alice running toward Daniel with roses in her arms, Daniel smiling as he accepted the bouquet, and the two of them leaving together.
Later, news of Alice passionately pursuing Daniel and the two of them being together did indeed spread back to Shadow City from abroad.
But now Daniel was flatly denying it.
"When I was abroad, I was so busy I didn't even have enough time to sleep. Where would I find time to date?"
Daniel scoffed and continued, "I'll never have an ex-girlfriend in this lifetime, though I almost had an ex-wife."
Scarlett wasn't in the mood to joke with him right now. She tugged at Daniel's shirt front.
"You're lying. On your twenty-second birthday, you clearly accepted the roses Alice gave you, and she held your arm as you went to a candlelit dinner together!"
She had seen it with her own eyes. How could she be wrong?
Daniel's brow furrowed again. He didn't remember what Scarlett was talking about, but was immediately amused by her anger.
"Scarlett, I'm not that desperate!"
"What do you mean?"
"I was twenty-two, Alice was only sixteen. Even if I wanted to date someone, I wouldn't be scum enough to date a minor!"
Daniel was obviously angry and flicked Scarlett's forehead with his finger.
Scarlett covered her forehead, her face showing an indescribable expression.
She seemed to want to laugh and cry at the same time, and she also felt angry and wronged.
"But you did accept her roses, and you let her hold your arm as you went into the restaurant for a candlelit dinner on such an important day as your birthday."
Daniel frowned and thought carefully. He vaguely remembered this incident and explained helplessly.
"That day, Reid and Thora should have also come over to meet and discuss something. The roses were bought by Alice for Thora. Alice had cut her hand, so I just helped carry them for a moment.
Later, the flight was delayed and I had things to do, so we didn't finish that meal before leaving. As for her holding my arm like you said, I can't remember that anymore."
After Daniel finished speaking, he narrowed his eyes slightly.
"How do you know all this? It's as if you saw it with your own eyes."
Scarlett fell silent.
Thinking now about how she had only seen that scene that day and walked through the foreign streets in a daze, crying like a mess.
She felt like a complete fool, played around by Alice.
She didn't want to tell Daniel at all how heartbroken and concerned she had been at the time.
Since Daniel was being so cooperative now, Scarlett wanted to know more about what was really going on with Alice's pregnancy.
"Of course I know because Alice was spreading it everywhere. Since she's not your ex-girlfriend, then you have even less reason to care about the child in her belly."
Coming back to the topic, Daniel pressed his thin lips together slightly.
"I care about that child because of the child's father, not because of Alice."
Scarlett's breath caught, and she stared at Daniel, urging him, "Then you have to tell me clearly. If it were an ordinary child, I could naturally treat it with a normal attitude. But I hate Alice, and you've seen it too. Alice can't possibly really settle down either. She and I are like enemies - we're destined to be incompatible.
I'm not a person of high moral character. I hate her! I'm very dissatisfied with her, yet you want me to accept her child. Accepting her child means being prepared for Alice, as the so-called mother of the child, to constantly be in my life, constantly stirring up trouble.
To stay under such compromising circumstances, I would feel like I'm being pathetic. Unless you explain clearly...!"
Before Scarlett could finish speaking, Daniel pressed the back of her neck and kissed her.
