Chapter 151 Nearly Miscarried
Daniel lifted his cold gaze toward Alice. That one look made Alice feel like her heart stopped beating, and a chill crept up from the soles of her feet.
She barely managed to hold herself together, her eyes reddening as she said, "Scarlett and Mrs. Wilson almost got into a fight just now. I was too worried."
Blair frowned and stepped in front of Alice protectively.
"Daniel, Scarlett's hand is just a little scraped. Why is she being so delicate! Alice almost got pushed down and had a miscarriage just now. Plus, my wrist was pinched black and blue by Scarlett. Alice was just protecting me - she's the good one here..."
Daniel interrupted Blair's rambling with a deep voice, "How did Mother find out I was hospitalized?"
He had ordered the news of his injury to be kept under wraps and hadn't told anyone in the Wilson family.
When Alice called, she had begged Blair not to tell Daniel that she was the one who tipped her off.
Blair's face darkened. "Of course I came to the hospital to see Elliot and happened to see Tom coming and going, so I found out about your injury! Stop hiding things from me. You got hurt because of Scarlett, didn't you?
Daniel, can you please stop protecting this unlucky person? Hasn't she caused you enough harm? Alice is carrying your child, you..."
Daniel cut Blair off. "I'll say it one more time - the child in her belly is not mine!"
His words were firm and decisive.
He left no room for ambiguity and wouldn't let Blair think otherwise.
Blair was stunned. She couldn't accept this fact and said angrily.
"Daniel, how can you deny your own flesh and blood just for Scarlett's sake? If the child isn't yours, why did you agree to the amniocentesis paternity test the other day?"
Daniel's eyes turned cold as he looked at Alice. "Have I ever touched you? Is the child in your belly mine or not?"
His eyes were icy cold, and the pressure from his gaze was like an avalanche, making Alice's face turn pale.
She never expected Daniel would deny it so completely.
She thought that before she gave birth to the child, Daniel would surely hold back from revealing the truth.
Blair turned around and anxiously urged Alice.
"Alice, say something! Didn't you tell me the child was Daniel's?"
Blair was still counting on Alice's baby to be a donor match for Elliot.
Alice's body swayed, but under Daniel's cold and harsh gaze, she no longer dared to fake fainting or play tricks.
She could feel that Daniel had no tolerance left for her now.
She bit her bloodless lips and looked at Blair tearfully. "I... I, Mrs. Wilson, I never clearly said the child was Mr. Wilson's. You misunderstood."
Blair looked at Alice's pitiful, delicate, and innocent appearance and felt so angry she nearly blacked out.
Daniel said coldly, "Mother, you said you knew I was injured and were worried about me, yet you haven't said a single word of concern about my condition. You're quite cooperative when being used by others!"
Blair's face turned terrible. She turned back, "Daniel, that's not what I meant."
She wanted to explain, but Daniel didn't want to hear more.
He glanced at Ray standing not far away, then swept his eyes over Alice.
Then Daniel forcefully put his arm around Scarlett's waist, brought her into the hospital room, and slammed the door shut.
Blair was left outside the door, looking extremely embarrassed and furious.
She turned around and raised her hand, slapping Alice hard across the face.
"You bitch! Who do you think you are, even you dare to deceive me!"
"Mrs. Wilson, let me explain."
Alice tried to make excuses, but as soon as she spoke, Blair slapped her again, making Alice's ears ring and blood seep from the corner of her mouth.
"Mrs. Wilson, I'm sorry, I..."
Before Alice could finish, Blair grabbed her hair and slapped her twice more.
Blair's fingers had long manicured nails that scratched Alice's face.
Alice's screams drew nurses who peeked out curiously. Only then did Blair, mindful of her image, let go of Alice.
Blair straightened her disheveled clothes, spat at Alice, and quickly left.
Alice staggered backward. Only then did Ray step forward to support her, saying.
"Ms. Brown should stop trying to get attention. If you really lose the baby in your belly, Ms. Brown won't get any benefits at all."
Alice pushed Ray away, covered her face in shame and anger, kept her head down without saying anything, and left in embarrassment.
After the hospital room door closed, Scarlett also heard the sounds of Blair hitting Alice outside.
Scarlett pressed her lips together, a bit unable to process it all.
Alice's child really wasn't Daniel's.
Also, the Brown family and the Wilson family were old friends, and Blair had always been very friendly toward Alice.
Between Scarlett and Alice, Blair clearly preferred Alice as Daniel's wife.
Now that she knew Alice had deceived her, Blair was so emotional and physically attacked Alice.
"Is Elliot's condition really that serious?" Scarlett looked at Daniel and frowned.
Blair had obviously placed all her hopes on Alice. Now that she was so upset, did it mean she felt Elliot's treatment was hopeless?
"You should worry about yourself first."
Daniel pulled Scarlett to sit on the hospital bed and took the iodine from the bedside table, grabbing her hand.
The cotton swab soaked in iodine caused a slight stinging pain when applied to her scraped skin.
Scarlett pulled her hand back. "Be gentle."
"You're so delicate!"
Daniel scoffed lightly, but his movements paused.
He even instinctively lowered his head to gently blow on the back of her hand, and his thumb soothingly rubbed her wrist bone.
Scarlett stared at him blankly, watching him deliberately slow his movements, watching his slightly furrowed brow, watching his seemingly tender and caring eyes.
All that anger she had felt earlier seemed to pathetically dissipate by more than half in an instant.
She thought about how she actually wasn't afraid of pain and wasn't delicate before.
Because she was often beaten as a child.
When John beat her half to death, she gritted her teeth without shedding a tear, biting down hard and not making a sound or begging for mercy.
Back then she wasn't afraid of pain and was quite stubborn.
But who knew that later, when she arrived at The Wilson Mansion, Daniel slowly brought back all her delicate ways.
She had been covered in injuries then. Daniel spent a lot of time just trying to heal the scars on her body.
She took oral medications, applied topical treatments, and underwent scar removal procedures. The less serious scars faded away.
But the serious ones still left marks, which she didn't care about herself.
Daniel found them unsightly though. He said, "You're going to dance in the future, you need to look beautiful on stage with so many eyes focused on you. How can you have scars?"
But Scarlett actually knew that he didn't want her to look at those old scars and constantly remember those nightmare days of being abused and beaten at The Lewis Mansion.
Later, he really put effort into finding some ointment from somewhere, saying it was a secret palace formula for healing skin and removing scars.
He made sure she applied it diligently for over two years, until her body was completely scar-free, before he was satisfied.
From that time on, Scarlett became delicate again.
Perhaps because she knew the feeling of pain too well, and knew that someone would care and feel sorry for her, she became even more afraid of pain.
But four years ago that night, when she hurt him and she was lying in the hospital, he disappeared.
She lost the Daniel who cared for her.
Now watching his nervous and caring expression, Scarlett's eyes moistened slightly, and she didn't want to hold anything against him anymore.
She wanted to reach out and grasp the happiness within her reach. She had never felt so close to happiness before.
Scarlett grabbed Daniel's hand in return, gripping quite hard.
Daniel paused slightly, looking up with raised eyebrows. "What's wrong?"
Their eyes met. Scarlett asked him again, "Daniel, if Alice's child isn't yours, then whose is it?"
