Chapter 538: I Am Indeed More Talented Than You
Sabrina raised her eyebrows, a half-smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
Things were developing pretty much as she'd expected.
She used to be part of GeneCipher Society and knew all about the bad blood between Sophia and the Society.
So she was well aware that, given Sophia's personality, she would never agree to join this research.
But this wasn't something Sophia could decide on her own.
"Why are you so against it? Is it because you're unwilling to cooperate, or are you afraid to get involved with this research again? I heard you were once kidnapped by Lachlan and taken to the GeneCipher Society for a while. I wonder what happened during that time?"
Sophia gave her a cold glance. "Whatever happened, it's none of your business, right? If you're so interested in other people's affairs, do you think you have what it takes to lead the entire team in the competition?"
Sophia's words hit Sabrina right where it hurt.
Although her resume claimed she graduated from a prestigious foreign university and had been involved in many medical research projects, only she knew how credible that degree really was.
While she was decent at medicine, she definitely couldn't claim to be talented.
She could only guarantee her basic work wouldn't have mistakes.
What was Sophia implying with these words?
Had she looked into her background?
Or was she warning her about something?
Sabrina frowned deeply, a cold glint flashing in her eyes. "Dr. Brown is joking. My talent certainly can't compare to yours. We, ordinary people, might never reach your achievements, no matter how hard we try."
As she spoke, she lowered her eyelashes slightly, looking aggrieved, which made many of the men present feel sorry for her.
Someone even stood up angrily to defend her. "Dr. Chambers is right. Most of us are ordinary people. We can't be like Dr. Brown, achieving so much at such a young age, but at least we've been relying on our own efforts."
These words gained the agreement of other doctors present.
Sophia glanced at them casually, her tone unhurried. "Thanks for the compliment. I am indeed more talented than you all."
Everyone: "..."
Was that what they were trying to say?
They were clearly being sarcastic - how did it become a compliment when Sophia said it?
For a moment, many people were shocked by Sophia's shamelessness and were left speechless, not knowing what to say.
"I'll pass this on to Francis. I won't be participating in this research."
Sophia ignored everyone's complicated emotions and turned to leave.
However, after just two steps, a voice behind her called out, "Dr. Brown, wait a moment."
Sophia paused slightly, slowly turned her head, and found that the speaker was another professor, Callum Holden.
He had been silent the whole time, not saying a word since entering the office.
So much so that everyone had overlooked his presence.
Only when he spoke did everyone realize that this legendary figure in Novaria's medical history was also here.
Sophia also looked surprised. "Does Dr. Holden have something else to say?"
Her expression remained calm, her face showing almost no emotion.
Even though she was facing a big shot with a legendary career, she showed no signs of flattery or trying to please him.
Callum nodded approvingly and asked her, "Why won't you join this competition?"
Callum had expected Sophia to make up some random excuse, but when she spoke, he was immediately stunned.
Sophia's gaze was clear, her expression calm, her tone neither humble nor arrogant, without any concealment.
She was completely open and honest.
"Because I don't want this research to become legal. If it does, all the efforts my family and I have made will become a joke."
They had gone through so much trouble to finally send Lachlan to prison.
If the country took the lead in supporting this research, it would be indirectly admitting that what Lachlan did was legal.
Although Lachlan was now locked up in prison, his trial hadn't officially begun yet.
In other words, his charges hadn't been fully established yet.
Under these circumstances, if Novaria's top officials actively asked the medical industry association to conduct this research, even if Lachlan was sentenced to death, many people would imitate his behavior in the future.
Sophia didn't dare imagine the consequences that would follow.
Callum nodded in agreement, looking thoughtful.
After pondering for a moment, he asked gently, "Your name is Sophia?"
"Yes."
"Francis taught you?"
"Sort of."
Callum became interested. "What do you mean by 'sort of'?"
Sophia explained, "Before I met Francis, I had my own medical teacher. His name was Robert."
Robert taught her a lot of medical knowledge. He was also the first person to discover her exceptional medical talent.
Francis only had the grace of recognizing her potential.
In her heart, Francis could only be considered half a teacher.
Callum laughed and turned to the other doctors in the conference room.
"What do you all think about this?"
No matter how you answered this question, there was no right answer.
If you agreed with this research, it was like denying Lachlan's crimes.
If you disagreed with this research, it was like slapping all the professors present in the face.
Everyone looked at each other, not knowing how to respond.
At this moment, Sabrina was the first to stand up-and she said in a serious tone. "I think there's nothing wrong with medical research itself. The problem is people like Lachlan with bad intentions."
