Chapter 539: Human Greed Knows No Bounds
Callum nodded approvingly and gave Sabrina an extra glance.
"I think so too."
Seeing that her idea had gained Callum's approval, Sabrina felt quite pleased with herself.
She looked at Sophia provocatively, the corners of her lips curving slightly upward .
Sophia glanced at her casually, not taking her provocation seriously, and simply said, "Human greed and desire are endless."
After a pause, she continued, "If you want to proceed with the research, I won't stop you, but I won't join either."
With that, she left without looking back.
Leaving the entire conference room full of doctors and professors looking at each other in bewilderment.
The professors, who had been highly respected all their lives, had never been treated so coldly before. Their faces immediately darkened.
The other doctors were too scared to say anything.
Callum silently sat back down in his chair and said quietly to everyone, "Meeting adjourned."
Without Sophia, this meeting simply couldn't continue.
Besides, what Sophia said made sense.
Although developing such a drug would be beneficial , there were also major drawbacks.
No one could guarantee what the results would be.
Moreover, Lachlan and his team had spent ten or even twenty years without success—could they really succeed?
In the end, he could only sigh.
Sabrina's eyes widened in disbelief. Callum was famously stubborn in the industry, and he was just convinced by Sophia like that?
What kind of charm did Sophia have?
If this research couldn't move forward, wouldn't all her plans be ruined ?
No way!
Absolutely not!
Sabrina took the initiative to stand up, and after the other doctors left, she walked over to Callum's side.
"Professor, I think this research should continue."
Callum paused slightly and looked at her in surprise. "How so?"
Sabrina suppressed her excitement and shared her thoughts.
"Admiring strength is human nature—it doesn't violate natural laws. And even if we don't do it, Lachlan's incident caused such a big stir that other countries must have already heard about his research. They're probably already preparing for it."
Callum lowered his eyes, looking thoughtful.
Sabrina knew when to stop talking and immediately left it at that.
Callum thought for a long time but ultimately didn't give Sabrina an answer, only saying, "You can go now. I'll consider your suggestion."
Sabrina's lips curved slightly as she turned and left the conference room.
Meanwhile, Sophia walked outside in a huff and called Benjamin.
Benjamin was handling documents when he heard Sophia's special ringtone. He immediately put down his work and answered.
"Sophia, meeting's over? I'll come pick you up right away."
Hearing Benjamin's gentle, deep voice, Sophia's emotions calmed down a bit.
She took a deep breath and said to Benjamin, "No need, I'll just take a cab. I'll come find you in a bit."
She didn't need to go to the hospital anymore. Judging by the time, the doctors from Harmony Hospital who went on the study trip should be back soon.
Benjamin had no choice but to remind her, "Then be careful."
"Okay, see you soon." Sophia smiled and hung up, then hailed a taxi by the roadside.
"To the White Group branch building." As soon as she got in, she gave the address to the driver in the front seat.
After speaking, she leaned back against the rear seat.
She still hadn't fully processed what happened in the conference room.
She never expected Francis would deceive her!
She had thought this was just a regular medical research competition, but it turned out to be completely different from what she had imagined.
Francis knew how much she hated the GeneCipher Society, yet he still chose to hide it from her.
Sophia's feelings were very complicated, her mind in chaos, which made her overlook the glance the driver gave her when responding.
When the car was halfway there, Sophia's mind suddenly cleared, and she felt something was wrong.
She opened her eyes abruptly, one hand gripping her bag tightly, the other quietly pressing against her abdomen protectively.
"Did you take the wrong route?"
She was met with silence.
Sophia's heart sank heavily, and her suspicions were completely confirmed.
She slowly straightened up from the seat, watching the front nervously.
Blocked by the seat, Sophia couldn't see his face clearly, only knowing it was a man.
He wore work clothes, had a baseball cap on his head, and his face was covered tightly by a mask, making it impossible to see his features.
Many faces flashed through Sophia's mind. She didn't have many enemies, and most were already in prison.
Except for... Elijah?
Her eyes sharpened as she reached for the door handle, only to find the car door was locked.
She could only shout sternly, "Stop the car! Stop the car!"
"Elijah, what exactly do you want to do?"
Elijah, sitting in the driver's seat, couldn't help but laugh when his identity was exposed.
"I thought you'd forgotten about me. Sophia, long time no see."
"What do you want to do?"
"Guess."
Elijah's lips curved up, his deep eyes filled with madness.
Lachlan was arrested, the GeneCipher Society was destroyed...
His efforts over the past ten-plus years were all wasted!
And all of this was thanks to Sophia and Benjamin.
He wasn't willing to accept it!
As he spoke, he pressed the gas pedal to speed up, driving in the opposite direction from the White Group branch.
Sophia sneered, "Do you think you can succeed? This is Harmony City."
Elijah wasn't fazed at all. "Whether I can succeed or not, we'll find out by trying, won't we?"
He continued to accelerate, his hands gripping the steering wheel tighter.
At that moment, Elijah suddenly felt something cool against his neck, and his eyes sharpened immediately.
"What do you want to do?"
His voice changed pitch, filled with disbelief and fear.
Sophia held a sharp knife in her hand and sneered, "Stop the car. This is my last warning."
Elijah didn't stop but instead asked, "What if I say no?"
"Then you'll find out how sharp my knife is."
As Sophia spoke, she applied more pressure.
The tip of the knife pressed tightly against Elijah's artery. If he moved even slightly, the blade would pierce through.
Elijah nervously swallowed, veins bulging at his temples. "Sophia, don't do anything rash!"
"Whether I do anything rash depends on what you do." Sophia's expression was cold, showing no intention of backing down.
A nameless fear suddenly surged up, and Elijah immediately felt something was wrong.
If Sophia really wanted to do something for him, it would be easy.
But... to just stop like this? He wasn't willing!
Ever since he was caught, he'd been thinking—if he had made a move against Benjamin and Sophia earlier, would the outcome have been different?
He had been too arrogant, thinking he was well hidden and wouldn't be discovered.
