Chapter 472 Lachlan Panics
"Let's talk about it when I get back. I'm heading home right now." Benjamin's tone was urgent, and his voice sounded a bit strained.
He only got like this when he was in a bad mood.
Sophia felt helpless but agreed.
She wasn't the willful type anyway, and it wasn't like she had to go out.
She was just worried about Benjamin's safety.
Now that she knew he was safe, she naturally felt relieved.
After hanging up, Sophia went back to the bedroom to rest.
Just then, the maid Clea suddenly brought in a glass of warm water.
"Mrs. White, have some water."
Sophia was looking at messages on her phone and casually waved her hand. "Just leave it on the table."
But Clea didn't leave right away. "Mr. White specifically told me to make sure you drink more water."
"It's fine, he listens to me," Sophia said carelessly.
After a pause, she suddenly looked up at Clea. "Are you new here? Why haven't I seen you before?"
The smile on Clea's face froze, and she explained nervously, "I'm a substitute. My colleague isn't feeling well."
Sophia frowned. "Who's your colleague?"
Because of her pregnancy, Sophia had spent most of her time in her room these past few days.
So she hadn't really paid attention to changes in the staff.
But this maid in front of her - she was certain she'd never seen her before today.
And the woman's behavior seemed a bit strange.
"I'm covering for Emma. My name is Clea. Emma hasn't been feeling well these past couple of days."
Sophia asked with concern, "What happened to Emma? Is she seriously ill?"
From what she knew about Emma, she wouldn't take time off unless something serious happened.
Emma's family seemed very poor, so she always worked the hardest.
She got the biggest bonus every month.
Unless something major happened, she would never get someone to cover for her.
But Clea was vague. "I'm not really sure. She didn't tell me. I think it's a cold and a fever."
Sophia's eyes flickered, and she nodded without changing her expression. "I see. You can go now."
"But this water..."
Clea hesitated.
Sophia's face suddenly turned cold. "What? Are you in charge of this house now? If you want me to drink water, I have to drink it?"
"That's not what I meant... I..."
"Get out," Sophia said coldly.
Clea was frightened by Sophia's look. Her shoulders shrank, and she hurried out.
After she left, Sophia immediately sent Chase a message, asking him to check on Emma's whereabouts.
And also check Clea's identity and background.
She hoped she was just being paranoid.
She felt there was something off about Clea.
But she didn't have enough evidence yet.
Sophia slowly got up and walked to the coffee table, picking up the glass of water.
She brought the glass to her nose and sniffed it. A cold gleam flashed in her eyes.
As she suspected, someone had drugged the water.
She'd seen this kind of drug before - colorless, tasteless, very hard to detect in water.
But who was Sophia?
She'd been learning to identify all kinds of poisons with Robert since she was little.
Even with colorless, tasteless poisons, she could find the flaws.
This drug should have been made by the same person who made the one Isabella used last time.
GeneCipher Society... were they trying to get to her again?
She just didn't know if the target this time was her or Benjamin.
Or both of them?
What exactly were they trying to do?
As Sophia was thinking, she suddenly caught sight of a figure at the door out of the corner of her eye.
She narrowed her eyes and suddenly slammed the water glass down on the table.
The glass bottom collided with the coffee table surface, making a sharp noise that startled the person outside.
"Sneaking around isn't impressive. If you've got the guts, come out and look openly."
The figure outside seemed to hide, going silent.
Sophia spoke again: "My patience is limited. If you don't want me to call the police, come in honestly."
Then she waited very patiently for the person to show themselves.
As she guessed, it was Clea who had just brought her the water.
Clea rushed in and fell to her knees in front of her.
"Mrs. White, I didn't mean to. Please let me go..."
Sophia sat on the sofa, looking at her lazily. "Talk. Who sent you here?"
Meeting Sophia's cold, sharp eyes, Clea shivered hard.
"Mrs. White, I..."
"I suggest you think carefully before you speak. You should know I'm not some kind person."
Sophia's lips curved slightly as she warned her casually.
Clea felt cold all over and didn't dare to breathe.
She'd already seen how hard-hearted Sophia could be.
Someone who wouldn't even save her own biological mother - how could she possibly let her off easily?
"I'll talk! I'll tell you everything!" Clea said through tears, confessing everything.
She was indeed Emma's colleague. She and Emma had known each other for several years and had a pretty good relationship.
The day before yesterday, a man suddenly approached her, saying he was Emma's husband, Hawk.
Emma was seriously ill and not feeling well, so he wanted her to cover Emma's shift.
She didn't believe it at first, so she asked Hawk if she could go see Emma.
Hawk kept dodging the question and wouldn't tell her where Emma was.
This made her suspicious.
Since she'd never dealt with this kind of situation before, she stupidly chose to expose his true face.
Then Hawk threatened her with her son's life, making her cover Emma's shift.
Before she came, Hawk gave her a packet of white powder.
Hawk said this medicine was colorless and tasteless, and she just needed to put it in Sophia's food or water.
Sophia hadn't had much appetite lately and hadn't even eaten lunch, so she hadn't found an opportunity.
Until just now, when she finally managed to pour the powder into the water glass.
"Mrs. White, I didn't want to do this, but they have my son."
"So you were going to hurt me?" Sophia looked at her with cold eyes, as if looking at a dead person.
Clea continued crying, "I had no choice. I had to do it. My son is my life. I can't let anything happen to him."
Sophia slowly picked up the glass of water. "Did you ever think that the powder they gave you might be deadly poison, and if I drank it, I'd die?"
"If I died, do you think Benjamin would let you go?"
"Or do you think... the White family is too easy to bully, and if I were killed, they wouldn't care?"
Sophia's tone was calm, but every question she asked was like a blade stabbing into the maid's chest.
Clea was crying hard, shaking her head frantically. "I didn't want this either, Mrs. White. But you didn't drink it... Can you please let me go?"
Sophia laughed at her words. "If I hadn't noticed there was something wrong with this water, I would have drunk it."
Actually, the drug Clea put in wasn't deadly poison - it would just make someone pass out.
She guessed that after she lost consciousness, Clea would take her out.
There should be people outside waiting to meet up with Clea.
Thinking about how Lachlan had been trying to get her to go to Celestria... the answer was obvious.
Lachlan was doing this probably because his plan had been ruined, and he was getting desperate.
