Chapter 404 Listen to Mrs. White
He hadn't had much appetite to begin with. After just two sips of porridge, he couldn't drink anymore. He put the bowl down on the table and lay back down.
Chase stared at the barely touched food on the table, feeling conflicted.
Before Sophia left, she had specifically told him to make sure Benjamin ate more, but now...
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and clean this up!" Benjamin waved his hand at him. He had no appetite at all right now.
Chase hesitated before speaking: "But Mrs. White said..."
Benjamin frowned impatiently, "Who do you listen to - me or Sophia?"
Who did he think was paying his salary anyway!
However, Chase answered matter-of-factly: "I listen to Mrs. White."
Benjamin: "......"
He rubbed his temples with a headache, wanting to lose his temper but feeling helpless.
He felt like his authority in this household had completely vanished.
No, it seemed like he'd never had any authority to begin with.
What's worse, Chase couldn't read his frustration and continued: "Mr. White, you don't need to pretend in front of me. Everyone in the White family, from top to bottom, knows that even you have to listen to Mrs. White."
Benjamin's lips twitched. He resigned himself to picking up the bowl again and finishing the entire bowl of porridge before looking up at Chase.
"Is this okay now?"
"Yes, yes, I'll clean up right away." Chase packed all the bowls and plates back into the lunch box.
His admiration for Sophia grew even stronger.
Benjamin was indeed completely under Sophia's control!
Sophia had predicted that Benjamin wouldn't want to eat, so she told him to use reverse psychology to provoke him.
It actually worked!
Benjamin narrowed his eyes slightly and waved at him, "Hurry up and get out after you're done cleaning. I need to rest."
"Okay, I'm leaving right now, won't bother you anymore!" Chase packed up the lunch box and immediately left the hospital room.
His steps were as light and quick as someone who'd won the lottery rushing to claim their prize.
Benjamin watched his retreating figure with a hint of disdain in his eyes. How did such a mature and steady person like him end up with such a frivolous assistant?
After Chase left, he suddenly came back. He stood at the hospital room door and poked his head inside.
His hands gripped the door frame as he looked in eagerly: "Mr. White, if you're bored, I have over a thousand romance novels that I can lend you anytime. I can even read them to you if you want."
Benjamin looked at him suspiciously, a hint of danger seeping into his eyes: "Why are you being so attentive today?"
"Am I? No, not at all. If there's nothing else, I'll leave now." As soon as he finished speaking, Chase closed the door and ran off.
He absolutely couldn't let Benjamin know that Sophia had given him a separate bonus!
Even when he worked overtime before, the bonus was never this generous!
Benjamin looked puzzled, having no idea that to make him comfortable during his hospital stay, Sophia had taken a large sum of money from her own savings to give to Chase.
Both his arms were injured to different degrees. His right hand was more serious and already in a cast, while his left hand just had a knife wound, nothing too serious.
He didn't take these injuries seriously at all, because he'd suffered even worse injuries before.
As he lay there, he suddenly felt a bit bored, so he took out his phone and continued watching that video.
The video footage was too blurry - he could only make out the general outline.
But he had a feeling that he was missing some important detail.
What exactly... was it?
Benjamin closed his eyes and tried hard to recall the Valentin he'd seen at the bar that day.
He had an upright posture and neat short hair. His features were hidden behind a mask.
Below that was an elegant suit. His every gesture showed good upbringing, and his manner of speaking was refined.
He must come from a good background.
Finally, his hands - they didn't seem unusual either. Long fingers, well-maintained skin.
But this last detail helped him eliminate quite a few people from his mental list.
Preston's age didn't match. Alaric had a scar on his hand from accidentally being splashed with chemical reagent. Matthew used to study medicine and learned pharmaceutical manufacturing from Robert, so he had calluses on his fingers...
None of them matched.
At that moment, Benjamin suddenly had a flash of inspiration and opened his eyes wide.
He remembered now - the way that person looked at him was off. It was a gaze filled with intense hatred.
It was as if he was looking at someone else through him.
Could it be an enemy of the White family?
He quickly made a video call to Preston. The call was answered soon, and Preston's face, marked by the passage of time, appeared on the screen.
"Benjamin? You're awake? How badly are you hurt?" Preston asked worriedly from the other end of the video.
Benjamin slowly shook his head and said softly to reassure him: "Grandpa, don't worry, I'm fine. Just a minor injury."
Preston snorted coldly: "Don't try to fool me. I can see the cast on your hand. They're afraid I can't handle the shock so they won't tell me, and you want to lie to me too!"
Benjamin looked at the screen in surprise and realized his arm had accidentally appeared in the frame.
He cleared his throat guiltily and explained in a low voice: "Grandpa, it just looks serious, but it's actually nothing major now. Don't you trust Sophia's medical skills?"
"Of course I trust her. I've never seen anyone with better medical skills than Sophia!" Preston raised his chin proudly.
Sophia was the pride of the White family.
Ever since Sophia married into the White family, all his grandsons who were praised as excellent by outsiders had been outshone.
Preston had long regarded Sophia as his own granddaughter.
Hearing this, Benjamin nodded in agreement, "Well, look whose wife she is."
Benjamin's proud tone practically overflowed from the screen.
Preston had no doubt that if he had a tail behind him, it would be wagging right now.
He asked: "Did you call me just to show off your wife?"
The smile on Benjamin's face slowly faded, and his expression became serious. "Grandpa, does the White family have any enemies?"
After last night's fight, his brain had been stimulated again, and now some of his memories had returned.
If calculated by age, his current memories almost stopped at when Cillian was just born.
Cillian and Sophia were the same age, 22 years old. Benjamin was only four at that time.
Cillian's arrival was an accident. In fact, when Amelia was pregnant with him, her relationship with Magnus had already fallen apart.
But Amelia blamed everything on him, believing that his appearance had caused Magnus to leave.
Amelia, influenced by someone's words, became convinced that if she had another healthy child, Magnus would come back to her.
So she found Magnus, drugged him, and had sex with him.
