Chapter 139 What Bad Luck!
"Matthew......"
"What's wrong?" Matthew asked worriedly.
Sophia glanced at the employees behind him, hesitating to speak.
Matthew's eyelid twitched hard, and he ordered in a deep voice, "Meeting's over. You all can go back."
The employees' eyes were full of gossip and curiosity.
Sophia used to come to the company often.
The employees and shareholders all knew that Matthew had a junior apprentice he cherished deeply. She was not only the second-largest shareholder of the Lumina Group, but also the true founder of the Lumina Group's cosmeceutical brand.
Outsiders knew that Matthew had very strong investment talent and had recruited a mysterious research team.
However, they didn't know that this so-called mysterious team was actually just Sophia alone.
Originally they wanted to sit here and watch some gossip, but unexpectedly Matthew suddenly swept his eyes over them.
His deep eyes were full of coldness, turning into sharp blades gleaming with icy light.
The employees shivered hard and hurriedly packed up their things and left.
Soon, only Matthew and Sophia remained in the conference room.
"Can you talk now?" Matthew raised his eyebrows.
Sophia slowly stepped forward, blinking her moist eyes, looking pitiful. "Matthew, I need those herbs."
When Sophia suddenly came over, Matthew was actually quite happy.
But now, his face suddenly darkened. "I already told you not to bring this up again."
"I really need those herbs. My husband's poison flared up, I can't just ignore it. Matthew, please." Sophia's voice choked up, her eyes full of pleading.
Without those herbs, Benjamin would die.
Although she could use other methods to help Benjamin extend his life, she still couldn't completely cure the poison in his body.
No one understood the pain of a poison flare-up better than Sophia.
When Benjamin's poison flared up, the pain and suffering he had to endure was a thousand times, ten thousand times worse than what she had to bear.
Sophia didn't dare imagine how Benjamin had managed to endure all these years.
But she couldn't bear to let him continue enduring.
Matthew was amused by Sophia's words in anger.
He sneered, his low voice carrying coldness. "Sophia, do you know how many years it took me to gather these herbs?"
Sophia bit her lower lip and guiltily looked away.
She knew.
Seven years.
To gather these herbs, Matthew had traveled almost all over the world.
One of the herbs was something Matthew had risked his life to get.
Matthew had practically searched the entire globe to obtain this herb.
Sophia's eyes reddened, tears couldn't help but spill out.
She reached out and grabbed Matthew's sleeve, pleading helplessly, "Matthew, please."
"You like him that much? So much that you don't even care about your own life?" Looking at her like this, Matthew was instantly furious.
Sophia smiled bitterly and shook her head. "Yes, I like him. And he needs them more than I do. Although my poison flares up occasionally, my life isn't in danger for now. But he's different."
Without these herbs, even if Benjamin survived, he would constantly suffer terrible torment.
"Matthew, I'm begging you. As long as you give me the medicine, I'll do anything."
Sophia had no other choice.
At this moment, she was still trying to endure the stabbing pain coming from her chest.
Her vision was also becoming blurry, the scene before her eyes flickering bright and dark, spinning.
But she couldn't collapse.
Absolutely not.
At least not at this moment.
If Matthew knew her poison had flared up, he would definitely give her the medicine.
Hold on a little longer.
Just hold on a little longer and it will pass.
She could do it!
Matthew stared hard at Sophia's pale face, suddenly feeling a sense of helplessness in his heart.
Whatever Sophia wanted, he was willing to give.
But this one thing, he couldn't agree to.
Looking at Sophia's pleading eyes, Matthew struggled to look away and slowly closed his eyes.
Downstairs.
Chase sat restlessly, his eyes constantly looking toward the Lumina Group building.
Time passed minute by minute, and Chase felt unbearably anxious inside.
Benjamin was still unconscious, his brow tightly furrowed, as if still enduring pain.
Sophia had been inside for so long and still hadn't come out.
Could something have happened?
Chase prayed silently in his heart, wishing he could immediately rush into the Lumina Group.
Just as he was hesitating whether to get out of the car, a petite figure walked out of the Lumina Group.
Chase's eyes lit up, and he quickly opened the door and got out to greet her.
"Mrs. White, you're finally back!"
A faint smile slowly appeared on Sophia's pale face as she handed him the box in her hand.
"Hold this carefully."
"What is this?" Chase quickly reached out to take the box, asking in confusion.
Sophia got into the car and let out a heavy sigh of relief.
Her weak voice escaped from between her lips and teeth, "Medicine."
"This... could this be those herbs that can cure the poison in Mr. White's body?" Chase's mouth dropped open in shock, his eyes full of disbelief.
For the past two months, Chase had been secretly searching for these herbs all over the world.
But just as Sophia had said, these herbs were extremely precious and rare.
There was no way to gather them all in a short time.
In two months, Chase had only found two of them.
Sophia responded softly and rested her head on Benjamin's shoulder, slowly closing her eyes.
So tired.
So cold.
She could barely hold on.
Her hands hidden under the suit jacket were clenched tightly into fists, her nails digging into her flesh without feeling any pain.
Chase was overjoyed, his eyes shining with unusual light.
"Mrs. White, you're amazing! Before, when Mr. Alaric White and Mr. Preston White personally went to ask Mr. Moore, he wouldn't budge. How did you do it?"
His voice was excited and delighted, but to Sophia's ears it was particularly noisy.
Sophia frowned and snapped coldly, "Shut up! Drive home."
"Okay!" Chase carefully put away the box, started the engine, and drove toward the White Manor.
Sophia turned her head and quietly gazed at Benjamin's sleeping face.
The corners of her mouth curved up slightly, her clear eyes overflowing with scattered light.
Soon, the car arrived at the White Manor.
Chase helped Benjamin out of the car and walked inside.
Magnolia and Amelia had already returned.
Seeing them all disheveled, Amelia couldn't help but frown.
"What happened? How did you end up like this?" Her tone was full of disgust and disdain.
Chase said anxiously, "Mr. White's poison flared up at the party. Fortunately, Mrs. Sophia White helped treat him and got it under control."
"How unlucky! If you know you're sick, you should have some self-awareness and stay home. Really bringing shame to the White Family." Amelia waved her hand in front of her nose and sneered contemptuously.
"If you can't speak properly, then shut up! Having a mother like you who can't tell right from wrong is what's truly shameful for my husband!" Sophia pulled the suit jacket tighter around herself and scolded in a deep voice.
"You, what did you just say? How dare you talk to me like that?"
Amelia's eyes were full of shock and disbelief.
"What? You do wrong things but won't let others say so?"
