Chapter 94
Chapter 94
At the Brown Villa, the family doctor rushed over with his medical bag.
After giving Stella a thorough examination, he removed his stethoscope, his expression relaxing a bit.
"Mr. Brown, Ms. Hall is fine. The dose of anesthetic wasn't large, and the drug in her system will be completely metabolized soon."
"As for the baby—"
He paused here, his words careful and precise.
"The fetal heartbeat is currently stable, but Ms. Hall has been through a shock. I'd recommend bed rest for the next couple of days with close monitoring. If there's any abnormality, you can call me anytime."
Alexander stood by the bed, his eyes never leaving Stella's pale face.
"The child in her belly—is it confirmed to be hemolytic disease?"
The family doctor pushed up his glasses and explained.
"According to the medical records, there is indeed a risk of ABO hemolytic disease. However, this is very common in clinical practice. With timely intervention, the vast majority of babies are born healthy. Ms. Hall's situation isn't serious at all—there's absolutely no need to go as far as inducing labor."
Hearing this, Alexander's hanging hand clenched into a fist, his knuckles cracking.
"I understand. Prescribe some medication to protect the pregnancy, and arrange for a reliable obstetrician to come for a consultation tomorrow."
The family doctor readily agreed to his request.
"Yes, Mr. Brown."
He wrote out the medical instructions, gave a few reminders about precautions, and then left with his medical bag.
Alexander sat down by the bed and gently brushed aside the stray hair on Stella's forehead.
Her eyelashes were long, but her eyes remained closed.
Alexander didn't notice this detail. He just spoke softly, his voice hoarse.
"Stella, where have you been this past month?"
"I thought you'd left the city, but then you suddenly appeared here. Do you know how worried I've been about you?"
His fingers traced down Stella's cheek and landed on the back of her hand, gently holding it.
"That bastard Nicholas kept covering for you. I checked your ID and found out you really did leave the country, and only recently came back."
"Tell me, did he plan all along to hide you away and secretly get rid of our child?"
At this point, his voice took on a harsh edge.
This time, I won't let him off.
He took a deep breath and leaned down to place a gentle kiss on Stella's forehead.
"Stella, this time, no matter what you think, I won't let you leave again."
He straightened up and instructed the servant at the door.
"Watch her. Notify me the moment she wakes up. If anything goes wrong, you know the consequences."
The servant quickly nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Brown."
Alexander took one last look at Stella, then turned and walked out of the bedroom.
The moment the door closed, the person on the bed slowly opened her eyes.
Stella's eyes were red, but she didn't cry.
She had heard every word Alexander said. She heard it all.
She also understood the concern in his tone and felt that kiss on her forehead.
For a moment, her nose stung badly, and tears almost fell.
But she held them back.
Because she knew better than anyone that the Brown family wouldn't accept her.
Joseph didn't like her. Though Brian had met her a few times before, the Browns treated Stella with extreme politeness but no warmth.
So even with Alexander's words, Stella didn't dare believe him.
Not to mention, she was pregnant now—how could she compete with the wealthy young ladies the Brown family introduced to Alexander?
Stella touched her belly, feeling the slight curve beneath her palm.
'Baby, what should Mommy do?'
No one answered her. The room was silent except for the ticking of the clock on the wall.
She lay there for about an hour, until the drug effects completely wore off and her body regained some strength.
Stella propped herself up and sat up.
Seeing movement, the servant immediately came over with a glass of water.
"Ms. Hall, you're awake. Would you like some water?"
Stella thanked her and took the glass, taking a small sip as her eyes scanned the room.
The door was open, with a servant standing in the hallway. The windows were locked, curtains half-drawn. There were probably guards downstairs, too.
She lowered her eyes and handed back the glass.
"Could you please call Mr. Brown for me? Tell him I'm awake and would like to see him."
The servant paused, then nodded.
"Yes, Ms. Hall. I'll go right away."
She turned and left the room, her footsteps very light.
Stella listened as her footsteps faded, waited a few more seconds to make sure the hallway was empty, then immediately threw off the covers and got out of bed.
She moved quickly, putting on her shoes, grabbing her phone and coat from the nightstand, and heading straight for the door.
At the end of the hallway, the servant was on the phone with her back turned.
Stella took a deep breath and headed in the other direction.
She had been to the Brown Villa once before when she accompanied Alexander to pick up a contract, so she remembered some of the layout.
If she remembered correctly, there was a small door at the end of the second-floor hallway leading to the fire escape—something she'd discovered by accident last time.
Stella deliberately kept her footsteps very light, making almost no sound.
She pushed open the small door, slipped inside, and went down the stairs floor by floor.
Reaching the underground garage, she found Alexander's car.
If she had the car keys, she could leave.
She bit her lip and felt around above the wheel—nothing.
She felt under the door handle—still nothing.
Stella was getting anxious.
Fortunately, she quickly calmed down, her mind racing through Alexander's little habits.
He always liked to keep spare keys in hidden places.
She crouched down and felt around under the car, touching a small metal box.
Her heart leaped. She opened the box and found a car key inside.
Pressing the unlock button, Stella opened the door and got in.
Start, shift, press the gas—the car silently slid out of the parking space, drove up the garage exit to ground level.
The sunlight was blinding, but she didn't stop. She pressed the gas pedal, and the car merged into traffic, disappearing at the end of the street.
Twenty minutes later, Alexander's car stopped in another neighborhood.
Stella parked the car on the side of the road, turned off the engine, and leaned back in the seat, breathing heavily.
Her hands were still shaking, her heart pounding as if it would jump out of her throat.
After a while, she picked up her phone and dialed a number.
"I need to go to the police station. Yes, the one in the Emerald General Hospital district."
Meanwhile, Alexander was handling urgent company business when he received the servant's call.
"What? She's gone?"
He shot to his feet. His chair flipped backward, hitting the carpet with a dull thud.
