Chapter 78 Tracking
Chapter 78 Tracking
David's face darkened even more.
"Someone like Mr. Jones wouldn't be that shallow, right? I heard Mr. Jones is still single. It's so rare for such an excellent man to be still single. If he really pursued me, do you think I should say yes?"
"Don't you dare!" David finally couldn't hold back and shot to his feet.
Even though he knew that the David Lily was talking about was himself, hearing her go on and on about divorcing him and being with another man made his anger flare up uncontrollably.
Lily's heart was racing nervously.
'He's angry?'
'Does that mean he's not David?'
Because if he were David, he couldn't possibly be jealous of himself...
"Why are you yelling at me? I was just joking. Did you really need to react like that?"
David took a deep breath, trying hard to control his emotions. "That kind of joke isn't funny. You're my wife. You can't say things like that."
"I'm your wife, so you can hide everything from me and tell me nothing? But have you been honest with me? You won't even let me see your face, and you talk about being husband and wife? So from now on, let's just be a couple in name only and stay out of each other's way."
"Stay out of each other's way?" David was so angry his chest felt tight. He hadn't worked overtime today and came home right after work just to see Lily and figure out how to test her.
And this was the result?
She really knew how to make him angry!
Fine, if that's how it is, don't blame him for teaching this naughty little kitten a lesson.
Just then, David's phone suddenly rang.
"What is it?"
"It's about..." Willie, on the other end, hadn't finished speaking when David cut him off.
"Okay, I got it. I'll come back to work overtime right away."
Willie was confused. When did he say anything about overtime?
Who gave him a chance to mention overtime?
Who would dare make David work overtime?
What was going on now?
David hung up. On the other end, Willie, who had already changed into pajamas and was ready to watch a movie while eating, resignedly changed back into his clothes and drove to pick up David.
As a qualified assistant, he had to understand what David meant.
Wasn't it obvious that David wanted him to come pick him up right now?
Who had upset him this time!
Lily's eyes lit up when she heard this.
Going back to the company?
This was a perfect opportunity!
If she followed Samuel to his company, she could find out whether he was David or not!
"You're going back to the company?" she asked casually.
David glanced at her, a hint of amusement flashing in his eyes. "There's something urgent I need to handle. I might be back very late, so go to bed first. Don't wait up for me."
Lily wanted to say, "I wasn't planning to wait for you anyway."
But thinking it over, she answered obediently, "Drive safely then."
David looked at her obedient appearance, the corners of his mouth curling into a faint smile.
Want to follow me?
Then I'll let you follow to your heart's content.
At that moment, Lily quickly sent Olivia a text: "Come quickly, there's an opportunity."
Twenty minutes later, the sound of a car horn came from outside the villa.
David got up, grabbed his suit jacket. "I'm leaving."
"Okay, drive carefully." Lily saw him off.
After David's car left the villa, Lily also left and got into an old white sedan.
Olivia started the car and followed David's car from a distance.
Not far ahead of them, David sat in a low-key black business car, looking at the white sedan in the rearview mirror, a smile playing on his lips.
"Willie, see that white sedan behind us?"
"I see it, Mr. Jones." Willie was also watching through the rearview mirror.
David leaned back in his seat. "Follow the plan. First drive around the city a few times, then... take them for a drive in the suburbs."
"Understood." A smile also appeared on Willie's face.
The black business car began weaving through the city, turning here, speeding up there, but always maintaining a distance that was neither too far nor too close, allowing the car behind to keep up but not making it too easy.
Lily stared nervously at the black business car ahead. "Olivia, keep up!"
Olivia gripped the steering wheel, carefully following. "But Lily, this car is driving so strangely, fast one moment and slow the next. It seems like..."
"Seems like what?"
"Like they're deliberately messing with us. Do you think he's noticed us?"
"We've been so careful, how could he possibly notice? You're definitely overthinking it."
The business car ahead suddenly turned right onto a relatively quiet road.
"He turned! Quick, follow him!" Lily said.
Olivia quickly turned the steering wheel and followed.
And so, the two cars chased through the city streets for nearly half an hour.
The more Lily and Olivia followed, the more something felt off.
"Lily, this road... doesn't seem to be heading toward the Jones Group. I remember the Jones Group is in the city center, but we're now... almost in the suburbs."
Lily also sensed something was wrong. Looking at the increasingly sparse buildings outside the window, a sense of unease welled up in her heart.
Had she guessed wrong? Was Samuel really not David?
"Let's follow a bit more. Maybe David has a branch office."
"That's possible..." Olivia's voice was hesitant.
The business car ahead drove faster and faster, gradually leaving the bustling city center and entering the suburban highway.
The streetlights on both sides of the road became fewer and fewer, and visibility grew darker.
Olivia finally couldn't help but say, "I think something's not right. This doesn't look like a place where there'd be any companies. Where is he going?"
Lily was starting to have doubts, too. She stared intently at the taillights ahead, her heart in turmoil.
Just then, the business car ahead suddenly accelerated, made a sharp left turn at an intersection, and disappeared into the night. Olivia accelerated immediately and rushed toward that intersection.
But when they turned the corner, they found a fork in the road ahead, splitting into three directions, and the business car was nowhere to be seen.
"What do we do? Which way?" Olivia asked anxiously.
Lily looked at the three dark roads, unsure which to choose.
"Try the left one first!" she said.
Olivia drove the car toward the left road, but after driving for a few minutes, there was still no car ahead.
"Nothing. Should we go back and try the right road?"
The two turned back and tried the right and middle roads, but they couldn't find the business car.
"Damn it, we lost them."
Olivia stopped the car by the roadside and looked around. They were now in a complete wilderness, pitch black all around, with only the car's headlights illuminating a small area ahead.
"Lily, I think we've been played."
