Chapter 196: Forgive? It's Better to Die.
Lily looked at the face leaning close to hers, and her mind instantly went blank.
Suddenly, voices came from outside.
The two of them snapped back to reality. Lily turned her head away from his embrace and ran out the door without looking back.
Dennis stood there.
His gaze darkened considerably as he unconsciously touched his own lips.
He had to admit, some things were simply beyond his control.
Like wanting to get close to her, hold her, kiss her.
He leaned against the wall, rubbing his shoulder, and unconsciously pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
Lily ran out and stood outside, rubbing her own face.
She saw herself in the restroom mirror—her face was very red.
She walked over and splashed cold water on her face several times. After calming down for a bit, she finally left the restroom.
She unconsciously glanced toward the emergency exit, wondering if he had come out yet.
But Lily didn't go check and headed straight back to the office.
She walked into the conference room where almost everyone had arrived.
Eric sat at the head of the table. Seeing Lily return, he raised his eyebrows. Back so soon?
Her face seemed a bit red.
What exactly did Dennis do to comfort her?
Lily kept her head down and said nothing.
Only then did Eric speak up, "Since everyone's here, let's start the meeting."
Delbert said, "Mr. Gonzalez isn't here yet."
Hearing Dennis mentioned, Lily felt like Eric was looking at her.
Eric smiled, "We're not waiting for him. Let's start."
Lily looked at the documents in her hands, a bit distracted, but she quickly pulled herself together.
Regarding the bug they'd found, Lily had come up with a solution and written out the specific process and plan.
When she got into work mode, she pushed everything that had just happened to the back of her mind.
Eric watched Lily's focused expression from the side and pulled out his phone to message Dennis: ["Meeting's started. Where are you? Lily bounced back so fast—share your comforting secrets."]
Dennis only replied with one sentence: ["Fuck off!"]
Eric's eyes filled with mockery. Didn't this guy say she didn't need comforting?
Yet there he was, eagerly rushing over. What a hypocrite.
After the meeting ended, Lily finally stopped to drink some water.
Only then did she notice that Dennis had returned to the office—she hadn't really paid attention earlier.
When she saw Dennis, she quickly looked away.
But Dennis looked up at the girl across from him. She turned her head to discuss something with a colleague beside her, her expression very serious.
Yet when she'd been hiding in the emergency exit earlier, she was like a homeless little kitten.
He'd felt sympathy for her at first, but now he had feelings for her.
After Lily finished discussing with her colleague, she felt Dennis's gaze was impossible to ignore.
But from start to finish, she never made eye contact with Dennis again.
Eric noticed this and just looked at Dennis with amusement. Did he mess things up?
After the meeting ended, everyone dispersed.
Lily gathered her documents and looked up at Eric. "I'll head back to school then. If there are any problems with the project, I'll come over right away to handle them."
"Lily, take a good rest these two days. It's the weekend anyway."
"I know."
Lily's gaze quickly swept over Dennis before she took her things and left the conference room.
Dennis stood up. "I'll take you."
"No need, I'll get a taxi back myself."
After saying this, Lily even quickened her pace.
Dennis watched her retreating figure as Eric's voice reached his ears. "How did you comfort her? Why does she look at you like a deer in headlights?"
"Single people shouldn't ask so many questions."
Dennis left the conference room.
Eric was shocked and pointed at himself. "You're calling me single? Aren't you single too?"
Someone's got a long way to go before winning her over!
After Lily got in the elevator, she lowered her head and breathed a sigh of relief.
But after the elevator doors closed, they bounced open again.
She saw Dennis's long legs step inside, standing next to her.
Lily knew Dennis had come in.
She could see his reflection in the elevator, and the temperature of her face gradually rose.
She finally understood what it meant for time to drag..
When the elevator finally stopped at the first floor, Lily practically fled.
But Dennis pulled her back and trapped her in the corner of the elevator.
Dennis looked down at her, his gaze intense. "Why are you running?"
Lily was startled. She turned her head away and said quietly, "Let me go first."
"Answer my question first."
"I'm not running. I'm supposed to exit on the first floor anyway. I didn't drive."
Dennis said in a low voice, "But I did."
"What does your driving have to do with me?"
"I can take you."
Lily looked up at him, her mind in chaos, not knowing how to respond.
Just then the elevator opened, and voices came from outside.
Lily panicked and pushed him. People outside would see them.
But Dennis remained unmoved, his tone calm. "I'll take you."
His words left no room for negotiation.
The elevator had already opened, and the voices outside stopped.
Lily's face flushed red with anxiety. "Fine, just move aside first."
Only then did Dennis slowly step aside, glancing at the people outside with a hint of warning in his eyes.
But the person outside looked at Lily. "Do you need help?"
Lily shook her head. "No, thank you."
She ran out of the elevator with a red face.
Dennis followed a step behind. He said to the person nearby, "Never seen someone trying to win someone over?"
Dennis walked away with his cold, aloof expression.
The bystanders looked confused. They'd never seen anyone pin someone against a wall to win them over—it was like being a robber.
Lily walked forward with a red face. That was so embarrassing.
What was Dennis thinking!
A car horn sounded. Dennis rolled down the window. "Get in."
Lily ignored him, a bit angry.
Dennis drove slowly alongside her. "At the rate you're going, you won't get back until tomorrow."
"I'll get a taxi once I'm outside!" Lily stubbornly walked out through the car passage. Dennis followed her the whole way, getting anxious. "Lily, get in the car!"
Lily ignored him. After walking out, there happened to be a taxi dropping someone off.
She rushed over and got in.
Dennis watched helplessly as she left, pulled over to the side of the road, and messaged Lily: ["Are you mad?"]
Lily received his message and replied with an angry emoji.
There were people outside the elevator watching—how could he do something like that?
Soon, Dennis replied with an apology emoji.
Lily couldn't help but smile when she saw it. He was getting better at this.
But her phone rang.
She glanced at the number and hung up directly.
Soon, another call came in. Lily still didn't answer.
These two numbers belonged to David and Austin.
After a while, Alvin called her.
Lily hesitated but still answered.
In her past life, Alvin was one of the few people who had helped her and spoken up for her.
She said coldly, "What is it?"
"Ms. Roberts..."
"Lily, Michael is in the emergency room fighting for his life, and Austin has been notified that he'll be detained for investigation soon. Are you satisfied now?" David's furious voice came through.
Lily looked at the sky outside the car window. "This has nothing to do with me."
Alvin said anxiously, "Ms. Roberts, Mr. Michael Roberts's condition is very bad. If something really happens to him, could you come see him one last time?"
Lily pressed her lips together. One last time?
