Edgar A. Ravensbane

Edgar A. Ravensbane
I decided to go out for a walk after talking to Grandma about me going to see Elysium about what was going on with me. The weather was still chilly, but I didn't mind it at all. As I wondered over the hills of land I noticed something on the ground. The closer I got the more I could see. A large bird was on the ground, white from break to feet. I didn't see any other color on the bird but a small bowler hat on it's head. The closer I got the more I worried that the bird was dead. When I was within arms length it opened it eyes, looking right at me. It's pinkish red eyes bore into me like I have hit it or something. I stopped moving so I wouldn't spook it. I couldn't see anything wrong with it so it was strange to see it on the ground like that.

"Are you hurt?" I asked not expecting an answer.

"Look here girlie, I am fine." He shouted at me with a slight caw at the end of the sentence.

"Holy shit, you talk." I stumbled away from the bird.

"You're a smart one aren't you." He tilted his head left then right as he looked me over. "Why would you be out here in this weather? Alone at that? Are you looking to die?"

"What the hell?" I glared at the bird wanting to punt it away from me. "It isn't that bad out here. I can defend myself. Not really, I would rather be alive...Or something like that."

I'm not sure why I was talking to this bird. It wasn't like it was a person, but how could he talk? How the hell did he keep that hate on? Finally I just shruged and turned to leave heading back toward home. I didn't expect the bird to follow me. When he landed on my shoulder I screamed then started to hit at him. I have no idea why I was scared by this bird, but it worried me that it was wrong in some way.

"Woah, watch the hands girlie! It isn't like I am heavy." He cawed at me as he landed again on my shoulder.

"What the hell? Why can you talk? Also why the hell are you on my shoulder?" I didn't care that he was there, but I didn't have to like it much.

"Ohh poor vampire not lliking the big bad bird." He cawed at me. "I was a bad boy and ended up cursed."

"Must have done soething pretty bad to be cursed to be a bird for the rest of your life." I told him as we moved toward the castle.

"Let's just say that the witch wasn't happy that her daughter wanted me and not the ugly ass bore she wanted her to marry." The grunted and flared his wings.

"Well that isn't a reason to turn you into a bird, well not this now a days." Then I thought about it, maybe he wasn't from this time.

"That would be true, but this happened so long ago that I am not sure that I can even die. I did get attacked by wolves once." He cawed as he stomped his feet. "Nasty bit of fun. They tried to eat me, but the dumb dogs didn't seem to understand that I wans't on the menu."

"That sounds horrible, so you still haven't answered why you are following me." I asked stopping before I would turn toward home.

"I have come across so many creatures in my long life. Vampires however are not on the list. I figured I would hang out with you and see what happens." He nodded his head again.

"Oh I see, I should just let you come to the house and hope you are going to just poof and be man who kills my family?" I tell him as I glare at him.

"I could tell you that I am not, but you are a prissy little vampire who doesn't believe talking birds." He cawed then cleared his throat. "Look I can't transform, that wasn't part of the deal. The witch didn't want me coming back around to get her daughter. So I am like this forever."

I wasn't really sure that I believe him, but he didn't seem like he could change back. Something told me to believe him, that he just wnated to get out of the cold. I wasn't sure that grandma would be happy about the bird. I shrugged as I started walking toward the castle again. He kept talking the whole time, twisting his head this way and that to see what was around us. His white feathers shinined slightly in the moon light, small amounts of blue showed on his wings but if you tried to pin that color down you would miss it. The white just sucked it all up. His black bowler hat made me giggle, which made him look at me.

"What's funny vampie?" He had stopped looking around to look at me.

"My name is Raven." I told him with a glare in his direction.

"Oh that is rich, you find a crow and your name is Raven." He huffed with sounded almost like a laugh.

"Yes it is kind of ironic. So how did you get the hat?" I asked as we got closer to the house.

"Oh I was wearing one when she changed me. It won't come off, no matter what I do." He shook his head then flew up then back down. The little hat staied on his head.

"Well that is something. Do you have a name?" I figured since he was once human he would have a name.

"Edgar A. Ravenbane at your service." He gave a slight bow.

I don't know why but something felt different in me. Maybe it was that he would just talk to me, didn't judge or try to make me something else. Was it possible that I was just missing something that would just hear me out. That would fight with me about stupid shit? Not that I could really say that about him just yet. I just felt at easy with him here. When we got to the house I saw my grandmother come out of the door. She glared at the bird on my shoulder.

"You are not bringing that thing in my house." She told me with a glare at the bird.

"Oh the snobby vampire who doesn't like birds." He said as he moved slightly closer to my face.

"Did that bird just talk?" She asked looking shocked. "I am not a snob."

"Grandma this is Edgar. Since I meet him I don't know..I feel at ease. Almost like a normal person again. I actullay want to see mom." I told her with a bright smile.

"Edgar is a crow my dear." Grandma told me with a nod toward the bird.

"Oh so smart, you can tell I am a crow. You didn't even check to make sure I was a crow and not a Raven." He cawed at her as he spoke.
