Chapter 161

Chapter 161
Sam

Sam cringed as he followed close behind Wendi, witnessing the entire debacle.

He heard Tara laughing. “I’d say if the pretend Luna hadn’t walked up, I’d already be with Leo. It’s really sad that the only reason he keeps her around is because she is skanky enough to be used.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. Clearly you’ve had too much to drink and you need to go home.” Wendi hissed.

“I know you’re not strong enough to be Luna of this Pack. I know you’re just a stupid human and I’m going to take Leo away from you.” Lizzie said.

“I think it’s funny how she thinks she’s special. Like she’s the first girl in the whole world that Leo dragged home from some bar. Just like her, they never last.” Tara said with a laugh.

“Oh but she thinks she's going to modernize us. Make us like humans. She don't get it, because she ain't a wolf. She’s just weak and trying to make us weak too.” Sam heard one of the other she-wolves say.

“This is the part where I advise you to shut up.” Wendi said as her fingers begin to curl into fists.

“What are you going to do about it? Cry? Get me fired again? It doesn't change anything. You're too weak to be Luna, and Leo still wants me. I saw it in his eyes. If you hadn’t interrupted us, things would be very different.” Lizzie said.

“Everyone knows that the mate bond doesn't work with humans. He'll never stay with you. He'll use you, get bored of you, and discard you, just like all the rest.” Another of the girls taunted.

To Sam's amazement, Wendi threw her head back and laughed. “Maybe, but one thing is for sure. It's better to have been a has been, then a never even had a chance.”

The menacing circle around Wendi seem to freeze. They didn't look like they knew how to respond to that.

“We will just see about that. Leo is going to have a mating mark, and it’s going to be mine.” Lizzie said with a vicious smirk.

Wendi’s expression was all business. “I think now would be a good time to see yourself out.”
She looked over at where Sam was standing. He hadn’t even realized she had seen him. “As you can see, security is already on its way and I don't have time for you. I have a Pack to run, a couple of mates to kiss, power to flaunt around and a fortune to spend. Good night.” Wendi turned on her heels and walked straight to the bar. Sam watched as she climbed up onto the only open stool in the entire joint.

Sam walked up and grabbed Lizzie and Tara by the forearms. “I think it's time for you ladies to go.” He turned them away from their posse and towards the backdoor of the club.

“Also, my friend here, will be needing your VIP cards.” He nodded towards Matt who seemed to appear out of the shadows. He held out his hand. The girls grumbled as they dug through their handbags and turned over their little black membership cards. Matt slipped the cards into his pocket and motioned for the rest of the group to follow Sam.

Sam calmly directed them to a dark corner in front of a back exit that led to an alley full of garbage. He considered it a plain message to anyone that had to be escorted out of the club. He always took a little bit of glee for tossing out trouble makers into this particular alley.

“I don't think I need to tell you not to be seen around here again.” He said. Sam opened the door and lightly shoved the group through the doorway. He quickly slammed it shut behind them.

“Now what?” Matt said as he eyed Sam closely. There was an unspoken need to try to bail their friend out of the hole he inadvertently dug.

“I'm thinking damage control. You should talk to Alex, and I'll go talk to Wendi.” Sam shrugged as they began to walk towards the bar.

“That was absolutely brutal.” Matt said as he glanced over at Wendi with a wince. “I don't know how she kept her cool.”

“She's a Luna, and she acted like one. I'm actually proud of her and that's what I'm going to tell her.” Sam said as he and Matt parted ways.

Sam walked up to the bar and gave the wolf on the stool next to Wendi a look that made him move. Sam took the stool and pulled it close to her. She was sitting in silence using a stir stick to push ice around in her soda glass.

“How are you holding up?” Sam asked trying to sound casual.

Wendi snorted. “About as well as you might expect.”

“I know that was intense but you really handled it like a lady. I’m proud to call you my Luna.” Sam told her.

“I didn’t really have much of a choice. I couldn’t risk a shift in this crowd.” She said with a shrug.

“Leo didn’t really have much of a choice either, he would never purposely hurt you. And you know what she said wasn’t true ” Sam said as one of the bartenders handed him a beer bottle. “You are definitely not weak. It took more strength to just walk away.”

Wendi shrugged. “I know it wasn’t his fault. I’m not even mad at him, I’m just beginning to wonder if this ever ends. Will I ever reach the point when I’m enough?”

“It always amazes me how you don’t see yourself clearly. You don’t see how you affect people.” Sam said as he peeled the label of his bottle.

Wendi chuckled, “Well, I do seem to have a pension for pissing off she-wolves.”

“Let's just completely ignore the fact that you're my mate's best friend and all the things you've done for her. But I've known Alex and Leo since the crib. It hard to believe the changes you've made in them.”

“What do you mean? What changes?” Wendi asked.

“You didn't know them before so you wouldn’t know this. But before Leo met you, he was truly the most lonely person I have ever met in my life. He was often withdrawn and depressed. And Alex, Alex used to be the grumpiest angriest man on the planet. He used to bark at everyone.” Sam shook his head. “Alex laughs, I mean really laughs. Leo is all smiles. The Pack is thriving.”

“That’s hard for me to imagine.” Wendi said. “Everyone talks about all the great things they were doing before I came.”

“You of all people should know, that creating a good life for others and living one for yourself, are too very different things,” Sam said.

“The Twins, they love you. And you have been good for them. Don’t ever let anyone tell you any different.” Sam said as he finished his beer and set the empty on the counter.

“Thanks Sam,” he heard her say as he walked away and left her sitting at the bar.
