Chapter 640 The Gap with Victoria
Honestly, ever since I met Matthew, I hadn't been a big fan of his way of doing things. But it was just a minor flaw, not something worth getting upset over.
Just as I was about to hit the sack, there was a knock on the door. I wondered who could be visiting at this hour. Peeking through the peephole, I saw it was Victoria again.
"I know you're still awake. Open up, let's have a drink," she said, shaking a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses in her hands. She had come well-prepared.
I didn't feel like dealing with her, so I decided to stay quiet and pretend I was already asleep. But to my surprise, Victoria kept knocking, as if she would keep at it until I woke up.
With no other choice, I opened the door and looked at her. "Victoria, you know it's really rude to do this, right?"
"Politeness doesn't pay the bills," she shot back, handing me the bottle and ordering, "Open it and drink with me."
I rolled my eyes, suppressing my irritation, and opened the bottle, pouring her a glass.
Seeing that I didn't pour one for myself, she looked at me curiously. "What, you think you're too good to drink with me?"
I shook my head. "I don't drink."
"That's not true. I did my homework on you. You do drink."
Victoria tried to pour me a glass, but I blocked the cup with my hand. "If you did your homework, you should know I can't drink right now."
Hearing this, Victoria scrutinized my face, then nodded and gave up on pouring me a drink.
She took a sip and said, "You know, I just dropped Matthew off at the airport. He told me he's too busy, otherwise, he would have stayed a few more days to hang out."
I was stunned. Victoria took Matthew to the airport? That made me really angry. Not because Matthew asked Victoria instead of me, but because he didn't even bother to tell me he was leaving. I had to hear it from Victoria. That was just ridiculous.
"Don't be mad. You should know better than anyone that you and Matthew are from different worlds. It's never going to work. Only someone like me, with a career and a background, is suitable for him. Do you believe it? If we were together, Horizon Innovations Group's market value would skyrocket. You probably don't know this, but I'm actually the sole heir to Starlight Productions Group."
Victoria said this with a calm demeanor, but anyone could see she was showing off. Watching her put on such a performance, I felt I should at least play along a bit. So I feigned surprise and asked, "You're the sole heir to Starlight Productions Group?"
Victoria nodded. "That's right. Now you see the difference between us, don't you?"
"Wow, that's impressive," I said, clapping with exaggerated enthusiasm and giving her a thumbs-up. Victoria frowned at my over-the-top reaction and said, "You can drop the act. If you don't want to be impressed, that's fine. But like it or not, the gap between us is real—and it's not going away."
Even without Victoria pointing it out, I knew my expression was over the top. After she called me out, I coughed a few times to adjust my demeanor and said, "If you came here just to show me how big the gap between us is, mission accomplished. I get it now. You can leave."
"Don't be mad. Anger is for the weak. Emily, you've built something from nothing to what it is today. That's impressive. If it weren't for Matthew, we might have met under different circumstances and become friends."
Victoria took another sip of her drink and smiled.
I quickly shook my head. "No way. I have enough friends already. I don't need any more."
