Chapter 641 Divorce Again
"You don't have to be so hostile. You know Matthew's just using you as a temporary fling. Once the excitement fades, he'll ditch you. I'm different. I've got a better body, a prettier face, I'm an award-winning actress, my career's stronger, and I have connections. I'm the one who's really right for Matthew."
Victoria kept going on and on. Sure, I couldn't argue about her connections, but I disagreed with everything else. When it came to looks, I had never felt inferior, not even to a star like Victoria.
"Victoria, stop showing off. It just makes you look insecure."
I was getting really annoyed with her constant belittling. Even after I admitted she had some advantages, she wouldn't stop.
"Insecure? Please. I'm just trying to make you see reality."
To cover her awkwardness, Victoria took a sip of her drink.
I quickly nodded and said, "I get it. You're prettier and have better connections. You're amazing. If you have nothing else to say, please leave. I need to rest."
Despite my clear dismissal, Victoria didn't budge. She pointed at me and laughed, "Matthew asked you to take care of me in Everglade City, and this is how you do it?"
"Stop dragging this out. I remember you said you're a perfectionist. Right now, you're far from perfect. Just leave, or I might scratch your pretty face out of jealousy."
I was truly fed up, so I raised my hand and made a mock scratching motion towards her face.
Victoria seemed to think I might actually do it and quickly backed away. Still feeling unsafe, she got up and hurried towards the door, saying, "You're so rough, such a brute."
"And you came to drink with a brute. What does that make you?"
I didn't get up, just turned my head and smiled at her.
"I'm a refined person, the most refined."
With that, Victoria quickly shut my door and left.
I shook my head in exasperation. When I first met Victoria, she had the aura of a true star, making me feel inferior just standing next to her. But tonight, she seemed more like a bitter woman, far from the glamorous image she once had.
"Damn you, Matthew!"
I cursed under my breath, vowing to make him pay in a month. He had said something similar, too.
Thinking about it made me blush.
The next morning, I woke up to find Maria had brought several new dresses to me. I asked, puzzled, "Whose are these?"
"Victoria's. She said the dress you wore yesterday was too plain, so she went out early to buy you a few new ones."
Maria's tone was clipped, her expression suggesting Victoria had said something offensive.
"What exactly did she say?" I pressed.
Maria hesitated. "She said even though you're from a small town, you shouldn't be so frugal with yourself. That you should treat yourself better. Her exact words were that 'if you keep dressing like that, you'll never attract the right kind of person, and might end up divorced again.'"
I felt my hands tighten into fists. My divorce was still a raw wound I didn't need anyone prodding.
"In the future," I said quietly, "you can spare me those kinds of comments."
"Got it."
Maria hesitated, probably wanting to remind me that I had asked for the exact words. But seeing my expression, she decided against it.
I frowned at the gifts in front of me.
